• Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
We just need a guy to be the deep threat. Overall, we have a lot of targets in Castles, Gilliam, Hutton, Babb, and the other candidates. The deep threat doesn’t need to be our number one receiver. I’m optimistic about the receivers.
We need depth on the offensive line. We really struggled when we had a couple of injuries. Remember the Cal Poly game when we couldn’t block that little guy?
On defense Rogers is the big loss because he could put pressure from the middle. Suani was improved in that regard at his lower weight, but he doesn’t have the reach. (I see we added a JC transfer who was a three star in high school Uilisoni Amone).
You have to like our depth at DB and Linebacker. Big decisions for the coaches how to use that.

Burke won a national championship at Mount Union and then won the Gagliardi Trophy twice (D3 MVP) the next two years.

  • Ags Picked 5th in Perseason Coaches and Media Polls
I don’t think the conference ranking reflects our schedule so much as we finished fifth last year and there is no clear reason to think we’re improved. It is a conference ranking, so if anything were probably helped by the schedule as we don’t play Montana or Eastern Washington.
  • Ags Picked 5th in Perseason Coaches and Media Polls
No, he spent a year there between seasons at CCSF in 2019.. By a year I mean he went through spring and fall camp but left the Cal team during the season.
  • Ags Picked 5th in Perseason Coaches and Media Polls
Newman is probably the most ready guy since he played two full seasons and has gone through a camp at Cal and with us.
and would likely do a good job. I don’t know if he has the highest upside. So, I’m thankful he’s in the roster but if someone beats him out so much the better.
  • Speckman moving on
Impressive athletic resume. Now we have three new coaches who have QB coach on their resume.
  • Speckman moving on
We have two new assistant coaches on offense this year, with impressive resumes, so I’m sure there will be no shortage of ideas.
  • Speckman moving on
Any word or idea of his replacement?
  • 2021 Football Recruiting
Quite fast for football, not so fast for track, He was fifth in the dual meet.
Hershel Walker 10.23, OJ Simpson 10.3 100 meters. Bob Hayes was an Olympic gold medalist and world record holder and made it into the NFL hall of fame ran 10.06 in the Olympic final. Now record is 9.58 and it’s been that since 2009.
At this level if a guy runs under 11 seconds and has some size it’s good.
  • 2021 Football Recruiting
Christian Calhoun ran track this year, competing in the 100. He ran a wind assisted 10.91. He is a safety on the roster. Darien Langley also a DB on the spring roster is a speedster.
The guys in this class didn’t get on the field, but I think that’s due to the COVID extra year seniors. The recruits from this class are all on the spring roster.
  • Gilliam Named Preseason Big Sky Offensive MVP also Gilliam, Pettek & Parks on 1st Team
Please outmuscle the other team, at least have that option.
It makes the game so much smoother looking, I don’t know if it’s because I’m biased but we often seem to have to walk a tightrope to put a drive together, fighting for every play, quarterback under pressure, receivers covered, great catch in traffic, runner breaks two tackles and gains three yards, etc. I have the Weber game in mind when I write this.
  • Gilliam Named Preseason Big Sky Offensive MVP also Gilliam, Pettek & Parks on 1st Team
Ulonzo Gilliam 8 carries for 17 yards against Sacramento says something. Or the team rushing for 73 yards in that game. We do better on pass protection, but it’s been a common observation here that our QBs don’t have the time our opponents have,
We are in the middle of the conference for rushing offense, with probably better than average ball carriers.
Some explain this as being due to deficiencies of our QBs who always are first in line for credit or blame. Or maybe it’s the offensive system. But I think we get beat in the trenches against the good teams. If we want to be good we need to improve in a lot of areas.
  • Ags Picked 5th in Perseason Coaches and Media Polls
The story on the web site engages in a little creative writing in this paragraph:
For Pettek, it marks the second-straight preseason that he earns the recognition. The staple in the center of the UC Davis offensive line has started 35 games and helped the Aggies boast the second-most prolific rushing offense in the conference and the fourth overall.
    What?
We were second in rushing overall, counting our playoff game, but fifth in conference games. The actual situation is worse than that because we ran for 380 yards against Dixie,
  • Why didn't Barriere get drafted?
I think he lacked any one attribute in which he stood out.. He is a good scrambler and runner but not fast in terms of the NFL. He has a strong arm, but not by NFL standards, he’s tall enough but on the very short side. He played at a very high level of competition for FCS, but it’s still FCS. Always room for doubt.
  • Idaho State Assistant coach arrested on murder charges
Drive by five years ago, Neal was a suspect from the start; he was former boyfriend of victims girlfriend. He’s probably been a model citizen for five years, knowing he was under suspicion.
  • 2023 Football Recruiting
I’m far from an expert on what recruits think but it doesn’t seem to me that moving to the Big10 would help UCLA or USC’s recruiting appeal. It just gives them more time in airplanes and games in snow. Teams making the move played as many tough teams as they wanted, now their schedule will be tougher week in and week out, but is that an incentive for recruits? Maybe for the ones that have a high enough profile for endorsements, but the Los Angeles schools already had exposure.
  • Aggies may be playlng a big 10 team in 2027
Except perhaps he was referring to the teams that gain financially also giving up something. I’m referring to a cost to all schools for something that benefits at least temporarily a few. The big schools moving are analogous to big trawlers overfishing and leaving a poorer resource for everyone in total.
  • Aggies may be playlng a big 10 team in 2027
Nebraska played Oklahoma last year after not playing for 11 years, and they play them again this year. Hard to believe Nebraska could ever be 3-9 like they were last year. An example where changing conferences didn’t help, although they had already slipped a lot.
  • Aggies may be playlng a big 10 team in 2027
How things have changed. I was at the Nebraska stadium thirty years ago, and their conference rivals names were cast into the structure of the stadium. Probably Big8 names.
This is one of those situations where every institution pushing to maximize their income is going to make the total smaller. It has elements of the “tragedy of the commons” where everyone shares a resource but there are no controls. The shared resource is the tradition and history of the sport. All these team realignments erode the traditions that contribute to making college football interesting to fans.
