Before all these players sign, the schools are going to have to put in writing everything that is promised. Since the payouts will be directly from the schools for schools that opt into the House settlement, it follows that what these kids are being offered by public schools
will be public info. That will be interesting.
They eat their own over on the Sac forum and they have a few members who do not like any "outsiders" to post anything on their forum. SochorField was actually able to make a few neutral posts about Sac before someone called him "a douchebag" and told him "to get the f... off their board."
The pitch is simple, world class education, great coaching, proven track record of players bouncing to FBS programs, Mountain West on the horizon so if you choose to do so you can stay and play.
Gould era was painful - though it did have its moments. Never saw the run game more punishing than under Gould...just seemed to lack a complete, cohesive game plan week-to-week. If we didn't run for 250, we'd lose - that's how I saw the Gould era.
Its like.....take your time and do it right vs. ram it through with hyperbole and half-truths and spend tons of money while pissing everyone off.....
I bet Sac and Davis arrive in the FBS at roughly the same time (within a couple years) with completely different paths/expenses.
Davis doesn't do chaos...for better or worse, we shall see.
Sac State should just cancel all the football nonsense. This is stupid. There is little merit in spending what will turn into hundreds of millions of dollars in the hopes of the football team someday generating enough revenue to justify the expenses.
Morgan just joined Athinaikos AS Vurona. I'm curious with the news of the WNBA adding three expansion teams over the next few years if that will be her opportunity.
This conversation going over QBs of the last 50 years, and just scratching the surface, would be impossible at most schools. My time at Davis the QBs were Biggs and Speck. I wish i could see a program from that era. If I recall correctly, on Biggs’ Boardwalk Bowl team, one offensive lineman weighed about 210 or 215 lbs and trained by swimming, rather than weights. When playing teams like Massachusetts and Boise that lack if size largely precluded running the ball but the QB put up big numbers.Speck threw for over 400 yards against Boise, and Davis lost a close one simply because they couldn’t get a pass rush against a line that was near 300lbs. I think the Boise QB went on to play in Canada. Davis vs Goliath games.
Moroski was injured before the Poly gsme in 78. It was regionally televised on ABC. Someone started in his place but was ineffective and they brought Johnny Lu in. He led a comeback win. I believe that was his only action that year. In 79, Matt Weinrich started with John as a backup (my frosh season). I’m pretty sure Lucido never started that season but I could be wrong - I only suited up for 4 varsity games (after playing a Friday night Frosh game ).
Big news with Nico returning. He'll certainly provide leadership and a solid defensive presence. With him and Chappell and Noudjihidi it gives us some interesting options in the middle.
NOTE: Those are "3 to 5 stars" players who didn't shine at a previous stop or stops. So they still have to live up to that rating.
And even if they do, the fact that they were "varsity players" playing a "JV schedule" might lessen whatever they accomplish in the eyes of scouts/recruiters (for individual players), or conferences that Sac might be interested in joining. Damned if they do, damned if they don't situation.
@ fugawe09 - Yeah, Cal Poly was good when Davis and Sac were bad a decade or more ago, then Davis and Sac got good and Cal Poly got bad.
I'm as baffled as the next guy, but hoping things turn around at Cal Poly soon. Don't get me started on the Cal Poly uniform colors.
Kind of starting to think Cal Poly going FCS independent might not be that bad. The Big Sky is too tough a conference and the travel is tough already. Also, don't really care to see SUU and Dixie State.. err Utah Tech added either. Neither really adds much.
to be clear, I do not wish for Poly to drop football. My preference would have actually been for Sac, Poly, and Davis to all be relevant at the same time and force the Big Sky center of gravity south with EWU and UM watching from the simp seats. But that wasn’t meant to be. I very much enjoy the tradition of D2 and then FCS football but I do think it will become increasingly hard to sustain in the west, so schools and conferences doing some future proofing seems prudent.
Cal Poly has a long history of football. The school's enrollment continues to increase, and just spent about $45-50 Million on the John Madden Football Center (you have heard of him, right?), as well as upgrades to the north endzone area. Football isn't going anywhere at Cal Poly.
Also, there is a new athletics director, so hoping whoever is selected does a better job than the last guy.
Well this is interesting… adding SUU and Utah Tech seems to be the Big Sky backfilling Sac States exit… and future proofing the conference for when davis inevitably leaves for the FBS in the future. Can’t see any other reason to add Utah Tech as well.
The traditional college experience that we grew up with is over. — Sailorgabe
I'd say 99% of the guys on the Davis roster are living the traditional college experience. Full or partial scholarship, and football. Lan and a couple others got a little extra cash.
I'd say this is the entire FCS.
Great conversation with Scott Marsh. I really enjoyed it especially the discussion about Pinnick and the tough schedule we have to start the season with a young QB. Also liked the discussion about all the noise Sac has created across the causeway and it was nice to hear a bit about the new Aggie recruits for men's basketball too and Scott saying that the Ags have "some marquee games" scheduled for this fall. Exciting times for Aggie sports!
