The team has had the tendency to play to the level of their competition (for better or worse...) And that's why we play the game. I'm not holding my breath, but there is always a chance.
I remember a number of years back when we broke the LONG losing streak vs UOP which was televised on NBC Bay Area. Harden and Payne were both out, but we somehow pulled it out.
Wilson gets the lion’s share of credit for the win with his second half performance but there were several others who played big roles. Omer kept us on the game in the first half with his offense. Franklin played consistently in his minutes giving the starters some precious rest. Niko was really tough defensively and in the boards. And the defense, especially Fegbemi, really gave the Beach fits (except for the guy who, like many before, had his career game!)
I know these guys like to preach ‘next man up’ BUT when you are going through warmups snd 3 three starters in street clothes it has to weigh on you - I think that led to the first half funk.
Major kudos to Head Coach Jen Gross and her staff: Joe Terramoto, Matt Klemin, Vicki Baugh, Mia Gallo and Deja James.
Regardless of the outcome of tomorrow’s afternoon’s crucial matchup against UC Irvine, or what happens at the Big West Tournament next week, this season has to rank as one of the best, if not the best coaching job of Gross’ 15 year tenure. The Aggies will finish no worse than 3rd in the Big West regular season race. That’s right where the Big West Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll in mid-October had the Aggies pegged.
Despite subsequent injuries that wiped out a solid looking bench, Gross and her staff have a young Aggie team in position to grab a share of the regular season championship. It’s admittedly a long shot, as the Ags not only need to take down the Anteaters on Senior Day, but Santa Barbara needs to get a road win at UCSD later that afternoon. Either will be difficult, both is huge ask. But after playing short-handed all season, being anywhere close to nabbing a share of the championship is pretty amazing.
There’s no disparaging the efforts of freshmen Emmy Ersdala, Sophie Lentfer, Theoni Tsami and Carrington Davis. They’ve stepped up all season. But I’ve no doubt that a second unit of Ally Fitzgerald (medically retired before 1st game), Helen Matthews (season-ending knee injury before 1st game), Sahana Kanagasabay (season-ending knee injury during 1st game) along with Baker (also missed first 3 games with an ankle injury) would have been more effective and productive. Absent those players, most of UCD’s starters have played far more minutes than a typical Aggie team. And Davis has lacked a true backup post player all season, forcing forwards Tegan Young and Tsami to battle larger post players to provide Megan Norris short breaks. Down the stretch, the “bench” has largely become Vic Baker at either guard or forward.
This group of Aggies has become a resilient team that keeps playing hard regardless of the score. It’s a team that’s been able to regroup during games and stage impressive (Gonzaga), and often successful (Hawaii, UCSD) comebacks. It’s one that has bounced back from disappointing (Santa Barbara), and sometimes crushing Stanford, (Irvine, Hawaii) losses to grind out tough wins (UCSD, Sac State, Long Beach). The longest “losing streak” has been 2 games. It’s a group that continues to play for, and to celebrate, each other despite changing roles and minutes.
nobody looks like they want to take a shot from outside the paint. i don't think ESPN has this in mind when they moved us to the ESPN2 game on Saturday!
I firmly believe, especially at QB -- the best QBs in the area should get offered by us, a lot of things happen at the FBS level, injuries, politics, lack of playing time for a number of reasons - these guys should always be able to come back to their home areas and play at a high level at Davis if they're dream of starting at Stanford or starting at Washington just doesn't pan out and they need a reset, or the Gods willing, a place to call home and finish their degree!
This week, it’s “make and hope for a break.” The Aggies can make an opportunity for themselves by hanging a 4th loss on front running UC Irvine this Saturday, but to have that make a real difference, they need to catch a break by UC San Diego losing to either Fullerton or Santa Barbara. However, none of that matters of the Ags don’t take care of business on Thursday evening against Long Beach. Despite sitting next to last in the conference both offensively and defensively, the Beach held a 4-point halftime lead over Davis two weeks ago in SoCal. Only a strong 3rd quarter allowed Davis to pull out a tough 10-point win. The scouting report on Davis is that physicality and aggression take the Aggies out of their game, so UCD should expect that this week from the Beach and the Anteaters, as well as next week in the Big west tournament.
Last week’s Big West Player of the Week and #3 scorer in the conference, Jaquoia Jones-Brown leads the Beach in scoring (17.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.9 rpg). Khylee Pepe contributes 9.1 points a game as well. Rosie Akot and Pepe both add 5 boards a contest. Defensively, the Roadrunners allow 73 points a contest, while only scoring 57.
As we enter the last week of regular season play, UCD has four players averaging double figures: Ryann Bennett (15.6), Nya Epps (12.6), Megan Norris (12.2) and Avery Sussex (11.4). Norris also leads the Aggies - and the Big west - in rebounding at 13.0 rpg, followed by Epps and Tegan Young, each collecting 4 boards a game. UCD averages 69 ppg, while conceding 64. A win on Thursday keeps their hopes for a share of the Big West regular season title alive for at least one more game. At the very least, it cements a top-3 finish ahead of either Fullerton or a surging University of Hawaii.
The Aggies have announced Cody vonAppen as the new Special Teams Coordinator. He comes to Davis from Cal Poly where he was the Defensive Coordinator since 2022. Taylor Chapatte will return to his primary role of Tight Ends Coach. Chapatte held both positions last year.
before this year, there was no departmental NIL ( I think of it as revenue sharing). That’s the pot of money they are trying to grow; that along with setting up a NIL partnership with an apartment group to help with summer housing.
One message he made: since 2018 (someone who was there correct this if Ive got the wrong year) the average D1 program has lost 200 players to the portal - we’ve lost 18. That says something about culture.
it was good to see a lot of new faces, especially younger guys. I thought they said at one point that silent brought in $40k. Live was around $15k. And the spontaneous donations added probably close to $15k. Not sure how much net from tickets vs cost of venue, but a successful night from that angle. Getting the message out to a new group of folks was important.
Having it in the city worked well - opened it to different folks. Can’t keep heading the same folks.
It was a great turnout. Nothing new really on info. They didn’t tell us the total raised, but there were some good bidding wars. Lunch with Tim is Wednesday so i think we’ll hear more then. But what really impressed me was all the new faces. People you never see at games or events.
