I thought the same about Palm trees being So Cal, but the ones on the Embarcadero in SF have turned out nice.

We have some very large, stately palm trees lining both sides of the street on a section of the street that I live on in the Land Park area of Sacramento. They were likely planted when the homes on this street were built in the early 1940's. These are huge palm trees with thick trunks not the thin, spindly ones you often see in tropical, coconut groves.

These palms are very tall and do not provide shade and the city trims the fronds on these palm trees on a regular basis. The big fronds do dry up and fall off at times and you wouldn't want to be the unlucky person to get hit by one. They are also home to owls and you can hear them heading out to hunt in the evenings. You can often see small bones on the ground around the base of the palms from their prey.

I believe they are considered "heritage trees" now which means that they cannot be cut down without approval since they are protected by the city because of their historical significance. Trees that are very large and meet or exceed certain size parameters are also protected as "heritage trees." Sacramento has one of the densest tree canopies in the country that currently covers 19% of the total land area of the city. The Sacramento Urban Forest Plan has a goal of 35% tree coverage by 1945.

Very large, old, coast redwood trees are quite common in the Land Park area and in the William Land Park as well but they rely on irrigation and are not considered a good trees for the valley heat. Other very large trees in the area are Deodar Cedar, Incense Cedar and various pines.

Deodar Cedars are mammoth trees that grow fast. Three of my neighbors have them and they are about 75 feet tall with trunks around 4-5 feet in diameter. One of my neighbors planted a redwood about 40 years ago and it is huge now.

I agree with the others here that palms are not a good tree for shade and, in many ways, seem out of place in northern California.

Hard to imagine all the individuals with decades of experience who thought an opening event in the afternoon, in Sacramento, was a bright idea. Did we not have lights on Day 1?

Embrace the weirdness... I only brought up the palm trees for aesthetic purposes, never intending them to be shade. I believe some sort of evergreen, pine/redwood looking tree would be appropriate for that end of the stadium, if anything.

How did everyone become an expert on trees?

With the exception of , who seems to me the most knowledgeable on the subject, it sounds like varying life experiences for the most part. Still can't get over the rat experiences some have encountered.

To slightly change the direction of the thread (as much as I loved my plant science classes I took, especially botany of cultivated plants and the chocolate making class) - what do we think that the open food court/public club will look like on the first floor of the new suite/press box building?

I am also curious what the club banquet room will be used for on game day behind the loge, club and suite seating.

I would like to see a more permanent merch shop somewhere too.

I'm guessing the open food court/public club space will look like a smaller version of a mall food court maybe? Since I'm not getting my palm trees, maybe I can convince Hot Dog On A Stick to re-open next to an Orange Julius and Mongolian BBQ? Here's my actual vote: feature LOCAL restaurants and give them "pop-up" space in the food court, and maybe have 2-3 breweries in there as well?

Club banquet room will likely be used at the President's and AD's discretion, maybe host recruiting events during the game, donor events, boring stuff like that. I'll be in the food court eating corn dogs and sipping Mexican-style lagers between quarters.

If there were 6 bays for local establishments, what would your "dream team" be for the stadium food court?

I'm probably not a great source bc I haven't been to Davis in so long and the biz turnover seems to be large. I'd say a nice 66% to drink vendors and 33% to food vendors. Food is messy and standing in lines waiting means you aren't in your seat. In my perfect world, the classes making coffee, wine, beer and meat shop gets the students involved and the fans enjoying and trying rotating options. I love a good Sudwerk's IPA, but that does get old after a while. The stadium naming rights belong to the healthcare arm. Why not get the students in other fields involved?

Solid list. Is Buckhorn BBQ the same as the restaurant in Winters? I like that place. Also down with Woodstocks for certain, and Froggy's. I think something like this is a win-win for the businesses and the fans.

There was a question earlier if any of these UCDHS upgrades have taken place or broken ground. I'm going to guess not considering we start home games in about a month.

Yeah, but the Central Committee of Sub-Committees on New Projects and Environmental Protection need to weigh in on it every 4 hours for it to be built properly. I mean, some things have to come first before actually building your project.
