  • Sac State's bid for the Pac 12 Thread

Things were much clearer before the California State Colleges started calling themselves California State Universities. Sacramento State is a perfectly good college,

I say that as a person who has taken more classes at state colleges than at UC, the two are not the same, although they have been converging with UC dropping SAT requirement.
  • Is there any action on the transfer portal?
When top recruits who haven’t played enough to show anything, or former starters find themselves buried in the depth charts choose to leave, all we as fans can do is hope they got a fair evaluation and wish them well.
  • Is there any action on the transfer portal?

They liked Williams from the time he returned last year from a multi year recovery from injury.
They started playing Simpson as soon as he recovered from an injury and at a point where he didn’t play in too many games to redshirt.
Apparently they preferred both over Gale. A number of players lost playing time under new management.
  • Is there any action on the transfer portal?
I wonder if Gale putting on as much weight as he did after averaging over 40+ yards a catch in 2022 diminished his effectiveness. Lots of spread teams have light tight ends and it seems that there would be a place for that especially with the multiple tight end sets.
  • @ Mercer to Open 2025
Seems likely to be Montgomery as its been there for the last seven years.

Manzanares was injured in at Wesleyen and missed a year after some spot playing as a freshman.
At CCSF, which he attended for one year, he was behind a player, Kristoffer Olugbode who averaged 141 yards a game for CCSF. Olugbode didn’t do much at his next stop, Idaho.

Langley has been here four years, but only played in one game as a freshman.
Cotton played three years, nine games as a true freshman, no redshirt year.
But both listed as juniors, one based on eligibility, the other by academic year. They don’t have a standard method for the roster.

Seems concentrated in the defensive backfield, not random
  • Aggie Pride: A UC Davis Football Podcast
The roster and scholarship limits are unchanged for FCS, so what is their for the Big Sky to opt into?
I think the FBS expanding their FB scholarships to 105 is motivated by a desire to suppress competition by allowing major colleges room to raid lesser programs rosters, but there is nothing a FCS conference can do about it, unless all the teams want to pay 5 million apiece and join FBS.

Our defense had 7 all conference players, and none of them were the cornerback that transfered to a P4 team, or the two guys who played ahead of him,.
Did our defense underperform our talent?
  • Looking forward to 2025
He isn’t saying that.. He is saying that the UC Davis site is wrong in callling him a red shirt junior. Meyer played ten or more games in each of his 3 seasons at Cal Poly. Then he played here. That is four solid post covid years, 21,22,23,24. He was at Cal Poly in 2020 also and Cal Poly called that his redshirt year, which makes no sense as it was a free year for everyone,

Rex isn’t graduating., at least in terms of eligibility.
  • 2025 Football Recruiting

New CB coach moved players around, Verner and McWilliams starting late season games, Bains consistently started at Nickel.
Cotton was a reserve last half of season but played quite a bit
Last years starter Alexander seldom played until end of season.
  • Jason Eck leaving Idaho for New Mexico

Talk about a meteoric rise, from Simon Fraser HC in 2019 to Idaho HC in 2025. A fairly limited resume for a head coach.

Ulisone Amone this year is listed as a Grad Student.
  • QB1 in 2025

Two playing QBs is not rare, and can be successful. Examples: Neither Dunniway, nor O’Hara were just wildcat QBs, yet Sac in its best year used them often on the same drives. Neither Mellott nor Chambers were just wildcat QBs. Chambers was arguably the better of the two but playing both left them with an established QB when Chambers graduated. It obviously can be a problem with some personalities.

As you say, playing more players when winning is not critical is easier. If a team isn’t a contender and has a bunch of new players they need to play more of them to see and develop what they have. That might be Davis’ situation next year.
  • QB1 in 2025

It is a matter of balance. Playing two QBs can work or it can blow up in your face. We saw it work a few years at Sac, Montana, Idaho State, and we saw it blow up at Sac causing a couple of their QBs to quit.

Davis a few years ago stood out for playing a lot of people and winning the fourth quarter This year they played fewer people even with probably more experienced team, and sometimes held on desperately for a win . Starters even made up much of the special teams. In the Idaho game Davis played less than 40 players.

That may be a reason schools aren’t required to offer a year of tuition and housing, so they can rent a player for a few months.

Bains will be a six year player only possible because of COVID.. Several more in that category but none with the year Bains had.
They squandered Toki’ and Nava’s redshirt years in 2021, they are from the same class as Bains, ‘20.

    Wow, good for him.
Randy is from my hometown and my daughter attended the Catholic girls school that shared campuses with Cardinal Newman so I was always rooting for Randy. I thought he would be a good coach as he played under different systems at Davis
According to ucdavisaggies.com Randy redshirted in 2009

Case Cookus was a true freshman for Plough at NAU.
