It is not a stretch to state that the Anteaters are the best team in the conference. This is nothing new. Head Coach Russ Turner has guided UC Irvine to the regular season title in six of the past ten seasons, something no other school has done more than twice in that time. Entering his 15th season, he appears headed for another regular season title. Going into Hawai`i last week they were undefeated in league play and barely lost to the Rainbow Warriors a team that has only lost once at home this season and is always tough to beat in Honolulu. Uncharacteristically, UCI lost a number of games at home in preseason play but most of their losses were to very strong opponents (combined record 56-23). Gone are past Aggie nemeses Myles Che, Brent Leuchten and Devin Tillis. It is clear, however, that Coach Turner had recruited a number of new players who needed to mesh with a returning core of bench players and mesh they have. This year, their hallmark is strong defense as they allow only 66.8 ppg. ranking 38th nationally.

An important holdover for UCI is forward Elijah Chol, a 7’ 0” forward in his third season as an Anteater coming out of Georgia. In his first two seasons, he saw very little playing time, but in two games against Bakersfield and Fullerton he bucketed 19 points while shooting 80% from the field including three of four from beyond the arc. The other starting forward is 6’ 10” Kyle Evans who, like Chol, had not seen much playing time until this year. He is also an outstanding rebounder grabbing 8.1 rpg to go with his 12 ppg. Chol and Evans have combined for 79 blocked shots this season As a team, the Aggies have 41. Getting to the hoop onside the paint will be tough. The forward who solidly backs up the two starters is Harrison Carrington, a U. of Colorado transfer.

The backcourt consists of top scorer Jurian Dixon, the one starter that Aggies fans might remember from last year. His scoring average has nearly doubled to 15.8 ppg. helped by his 44% accuracy from trey land. His fellow guards are Darin Saran, a transfer from Stanford, and Tama Isaac, a freshman from New Zealand. Those two combine to toss in an additional 19 ppg. The Eaters have good depth at guard with freshman Jovan Jester, Jr. and sixth year senior Andre Henry.

The Anteaters are not only coming to Davis after a bye on Thursday, but angry about their loss to Hawai`i last week, so they will be rested and motivated. An upset by the Aggies would be special but a real long shot. They'll have to play a lot better on Saturday than they did on Thursday.

Thanks for this write-up! This would be a huge game. I am amazed how well they reloaded this year.

Irvine is consistently at or near the top in the Big West every year. Russ Turner has done a great job there.

Hopefully Cooper is at 100%. He returned but wasn’t moving too well. Offense really stagnsnted without him down the stretch.

Oddsmakers have this as irvine 2.5 point favorites. They are more optimistic than I am at how we’ll match up, especially if we’re missing Nils.

I’ll have to miss this one in person - granddaughter has a play.

Seems like the Ags will need to shoot very well from outside in order to pull this one out.

Cooper is okay and playing great! Outscoring UCI 8-4 by himself.

Anyone know the reason they flip-flopped the team benches this year?

The Aggies have brought their B game so far although their shooting is dragging it down from an A. Odd, because they're moving the ball well and getting good shots. The D is solid as well as the rebounding.

to have the visitors shooting into the band/student area in the second half. The ‘lounge’ didn’t offer an intimidating backdrop for free throws late in the game.

According to a department post, opponent FT percentage is dropping about 10% in the second half.

I miss the Irvine asst. coach with the big Afro! Turner is so much more animated when he plays us

I think something is, in fact, the matter with Nils. He went out after only 9 minutes and has not been back.

I missed him being out. Dang. Our offense struggles with him. Omar is too gun shy right now to really contribute on that end. I’d like to see more Stokes - he’s tough on the boards.

Let them get on a big run to take the lead; Daugherty makes the bomb to tie it.

No feeling too good about second half - hope they prove me wrong

Turner has been livid since the first foul on his team. I can’t believe how lenient the refs are with him barking at them constantly. No other coach in the conference complains as much as he does but the refs generally don’t T him up.

The Ags shot better from the 3 than overall in the first half, 54% to 43%.

I’m guessing that Stokes must still be under the weather from the flu bug that hit the team.

Ugly start to the half on both sides. I think we bring out the worst in teams- except the guy from Bakersfield who scored 32

Aggies have missed 7 free throws; UCI has missed none.

That was way too close. Don't know why the Ags didn't foul in the backcourt at the end. Aggies could have lost on poor free throws (20 for 30), but their solid trey shooting (11 for 27) saved them. Interesting that Rocak made 4 of them and he only made only one 2 pointer.

I guess Coach Les held Cooper out in the first half due to foul trouble.

Toke I agree. I suppose they were worried that if Irvine missed the 2nd shot intentionally after making the first they'd have a shot at the rebound and score with maybe another foul. It's all 4D chess to me at the end, though.

It was a good win by the Ags. I'm sure the Anteaters will be VERY grumpy about it. They made some crucial mistakes. Now if the Ags could reliably shoot free throws I'd be happier. Sheesh. Take a lesson from Poly!

Nico played a strong game and Sevilla played a hard defense. Just a fine team effort by the Aggies. And a good game to watch.

I admit I'd like to strangle Turner though. I guess his players are used to him.

I thought they should foul. There was so little time left it would have been tough for the Eaters to do much with a rebound. But I’m not a coach.

Hopefully we’ll be wearing Tahoe Blue the rest of the season - undefeated!

The ticket office called me yesterday to thank bd for being a season ticket holder and to ask about my experience this year. ‘Anything you’d like to see different?’ ‘Yes, how about an easy win!’

Seems like every real home game except NDSU has come down to the last minute (or worse!)

Just before the National Anthem Nico suggested they were staying in them until they lose. I'd say it's a good call.

New school colors?? If only we had an in with Nike like a certain university to the north of us.

I listened to Les in the post-game radio while driving home and he said that Irvine did a good job of getting the ball into their front court before calling a TO with 1.5 seconds to go. He said he did not consider fouling at that point because of the new NCAA "continuation" rule this year.

The rule essentially states that a player who absorbs contact as they step forward toward the basket is considered to be in the act of shooting even if they were fouled before they started their upward motion of the shot. Les said that refs have been calling 3 point fouls like that every time when a player takes a step forward toward the basket even when they haven't begun the upward motion of a 3 point shot. So it was too risky to attempt to foul the Irvine player before the shot.

probably a little gun shy after getting burned on something similar vs Seattle

I was thinking the same thing, Mike. I flipped my wig when they called that foul in the Seattle game since the player was most definitely going up for a shot. I guess the refs got it right though considering this new rule...
