The Aggies play their second conference road game against another tough opponent in UCSB. Statistically, the Gauchos are not much better than UC Davis. Long time Aggie fans, however, know that UCSB has dominated the series 14-30. Recent fans note that we have a four game winning streak, having swept the Gauchos for two years in a row now. For those two years, Santa Barbara’s combined conference record was 20-20, a mediocrity uncharacteristic for them. Setting past history aside, the Gauchos have not been doing well. On Saturday, they lost to CSUN 65-74, the same team the Ags just beat. But coach Joe Pasternak’s record prior to the last two season was an impressive 64-30. He seems to have rebuilt the team with some talented transfers (6) and four freshmen. The Gauchos started the season well, but at this point they have only defeated one team with a winning record, at home against Seattle, whom the Aggies should also have beaten at home. They have faltered badly in recent weeks due to an injury as noted below. ESPN as of this writing gives them a 76.5% chance of beating UCD. I’m inclined to think our chances are better than that.

The top scorer for the Gauchos is guards Aidan Mahaney, a senior transfer from UConn (14.9 ppg). He not only hits 43% of his trey attempts (and does not lead the team in that category) but over 83% from the foul line. Zion Sensely is a very good rebounding “guard,” who is 6’ 8” and leads the team with nearly 8 rpg. The third guard is freshmen C. J. Shaw, who was the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year. He is their 3-point leader making over 45%.Veteran guard Jason Fontenenet II, who started all 34 games last year, is no longer a starter, but contributes over 25 minutes a game. Coach Pasternak has lost Utah transfer and point guard Miro Little, who was averaging double figures in scoring and had an assist to turnover ratio of over 2.0. There is no timetable for his return. They sorely miss his floor leadership as they have gone 2-4 in his absence.

The starting front court consists of forwards Hosana Kitenge and Colin Smith, both 6’8”. Smith returns as a part time starter from last season. He trails only Shaw in his ability to hit the 3. In fact, the Gauchos have four regulars who make over 40% from beyond the arc. I’m not sure why they only score at about the same rate as the Ags. Kitenge hails from England and most recently from the University of Louisiana, where he averaged 6.5 rpg and 11.9 ppg. At UCSB both numbers are slightly down, but he leads the team in blocked shots, although it’s a relatively low 10 or 0.7 per game. He’s no Pierre Geneste or Niko Rocak, for that matter.

I see us listed us 4.5 point underdogs with the Gauchos having a 67% chance of winning. For some reason, we’ve matched up well with them the past few years - our defense seems to fluster them

Does anyone know if Aidan Mahaney is still out? We can use a break haha

Never mind! I saw that he played in the CSUN game, but only had 7 points.

Just looked at live stats - down 16-4 after 4. UCSB is 4-5 from 3, 6-7 overall. Digging a big hole

Bad start. Gauchos shooting 87% in first 4 minutes.

37-28 with 7 to go. We seemed to have settled a bit but gauchos still shooting at a high clip. 9-1 from 3, 80% from the field. We’re over 50% - gonna gave to figure out how to slow them down.

Got it down to 47-43 by holding them scoreless over last two minutes of half. Crazy stat - they have 18 baskets and 14 assists!

Aggies ran into a Little bad luck with the return of #1 as the UCSB point guard. In my preview comments I noted that there was no timetable for his return, but... Of course, the Gauchos opened with a hot hand that reminded me too much of Jaden Alexander of Cal State Bakersfield. I was thinking "Oh no, not again." Good thing the Aggie turned up the defense and the Gauchos cooled off. You have to love the tenacity of the Aggie players.

Our defense has been so sloppy. But somehow it’s a 4 point game.

We are playing much better this half. We got this. GO AGS!

The Santa Barbara broadcast team of Max Kelton and Louis Reynaud is one of the better ones in the conference, I think. They're knowledgable about the game, well prepared and objective while still making it clear who they're rooting for.

Up 57-51 15:30 to go. They’ve come back to earth shooting wise. This would be a BIG win

Still up 66-60 with 11 to go. Starting to rack up some fouls.

Ags outside shooting has really been up and down, but at this point with the score tied at 70, they're only 12 of 30 from 3. UCSB is 11 of 20.

Getting some fortunate bounces to move into a 7 point lead with 4 minutes left. Still a long way to go.

Weird that we aren’t playing many bench players. Thought Cyril had been playing well

Defense really got us back into this in the second half. We’ve had a few juggle matches bounce our way which has helped. 82-79 with 2 to go.

And Niko nails his FTs when we needed it. 87-81 Ags, 80 secs to go.

Holy crap - what a gut check victory. Needed that after the home stinker vs Bakersfield.

I made my reservations for Henderson today - feeling better about us being there after tonight!

Always to get a road game win, but especially in the Thunder Dome. Good team play by the Ags. They had 6 players in double figures and all 8 players who got in the game had at least one rebound. Most importantly, the team defense was really solid after the first five minutes or so. Seems like Coach les has settled into an 8 man rotation of guys who can play that kind of D?

That game was awesome to watch by the end. Missed the first half but it was really great to see the defense step up at the end even after an exhausting first half.

I’ve been a bit surprised that Omar has slipped almost completely out of the rotation but I suspect it’s due to defensive issues. Stokes is getting more snd more time, and he’s coming up big in assists/rebounds - still a bit of a lack of confidence on offense especially around the bucket (I know he can dunk!).

It’ll be interesting vs Poly how we play - last year, Niko hardly played vs them because of their guard-centric lineup. If that’s the case, someone from that short bench will need to play.

Chappell entering for Omar has been the right call

It's kind of disappointing to me that the men's basketball team has only had a fraction of the interest on this talk group that the football team does. Or for that matter, as much as they got in past years. I can certainly appreciate the strong interest in Aggie football, as well as the team has done for decades, but it's not a zero sum game. Not sure what has happened to the basketball fans. Are they out there and just not posting or has their record of late kept the fans away?

No doubt that football is the main interest on this forum and is the marquee sport for Davis athletics. It is also the sport with the most successful legacy in Aggie athletics history.

I don't think we'll see that kind of following for basketball until the program creates a more consistent winning legacy here at Davis. We seem to be moving in the right direction but, honestly, it's been a frustratingly slow process compared to the generally consistent success of football. Like they say, "win and they will come" and that's really important here where Aggie athletics are not an easy sell with the community and the students.

Checking back, I did notice that there were a lot more posts for Aggie men's basketball back in the 2017-19 era. Had mostly to do with winning. If you win it, they will come.
