Big West play for the Aggies ends with a grinding pair against the top two teams in the league. Two unlikely wins would give them the 5th seed in the Big West tourney. Two losses could sink them to the 8th seed. Also unlikely given that Hawai`i has to play CSUN in Northridge. The Anteaters will be hoping to get the first seed over UCSD and they have not forgotten that the Ags played them tough down in the Bren Events Center. As he has for the last three years Brent Leuchten will be the force to contend with as he brings his 8.9 rpg and 15.6 ppg in to Aggieland. UCI is a 6.5 point favorite. The game will be the last regular season game on ESPN+

I think they can't drop lower than 7th? Maybe?
  • Toke69

Yes, the lowest they can go is 7th, but that is unlikely. They would have to lose both games this weekend (probable) and Hawai`i would have to sweep Bakersfield and CSUN (very improbable). If that happens I think Hawai`i wins the tiebreaker.

Well, they're off to a fairly miserable start. More turnovers than field goals in the first 4:32 and down 10-2. Not much of a crowd either.

Yeah crowd isnt massive. From the rumblings ive heard on campus, I am keeping my fingers crossed that the crowd is much bigger on saturday.

I’m glad that Leo made that 3. Hopefully that gets him going

Irvine shooting 63%, we are at 30%. Esters have incredible energy and confidence. We don’t

It looks like the Ags are demoralized, not playing with a whole lot of energy or focus, which does not bode well for Saturday.

yeah, looking just a bit strung out.

I sure hope the second half goes better than the first. This is the best turnout of students we’ve had this year and a blowout loss won’t help bring them back on Saturday.

So I guess we may be projected to play Hawaii for our first game?
  • Toke69
    397
    Yes, whether we're 6th or 7th, they'll probably be 7th or 6th, so most likely we'll play Hawai`i again.

Ags outscoring UCI in the second half, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Irvine is going to win this one.

There was a great crowd last night, and the students were in force. Too bad our Aggies didn’t show up. Hopefully they show up Saturday.

The students were ready to cheer but didn't get many opportunities.

Irvine was confident and fired up. Turner was ranting and raving all night long, despite the large deficit. Che was 10-11 from the floor on route to 31 points (20 over his average....we seem to elevate guys to career games). Tillis was 6-8. Their size, spacing and passing led to open shots and they nailed them.

When we start like last night, missing open shots and giving up easy buckets, we're doomed. Just don't have the fire power and depth to make a comeback.

The team looks mentally and physically beaten. Heck, we even had Daugherty with a faceguard.

When Sevilla misses 2 FT's (he was around 95% before last night) its just not his/our night.

Unless Leo and Connor and find their shot before 8:00 on Saturday, its not going to be pretty.

TY plays his ass off despite the frustration you can see building in him. I feel for him.

I sit in front of AgAlum and his wife, and across the aisle from Greg Wong. My soundtrack last night was :

    (From behind) ‘Come in Connor……ugh’
    ‘Come on Leo…..damn’
    ‘That coach is nuts!’

(From Across) ‘Che with another; he’s 8-8’
    ‘Irvine 3….it’s good….that’s 5 in a row’
‘Che is superhuman tonight…that’s 31 points with one miss’

It was painful to watch live. After watching these seniors for several years, you just want to see them get something positive. Really tough ending for them.

My wife (former cheer leader) thinks the cheer leaders should line up in front of the student section and actively be leading the students on the cheers, like DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE, instead of just sitting on the side lines. The band director i think does a really good job getting the band to get loud. We need that energy in the student section.

Agreed. Crossing my fingers that the student section get send the boys into the tourney with some momentum. I have not seen this much on campus attempts to reach the students concerning the game in years. The cheerleaders, gunrock and TY have been out on campus handing out ticket info the last few days.
