In addition to UCI, UCSD is the second “bully on the block” that the Ags need to face down in an odd home-away week. So far, the only home game they have lost in league play has been to the Anteaters. To make it worse, they’re on a 6 game winning streak. Triton’s head coach Eric Olen has done a really incredible job of getting UCSD through the transition to division 1 play and they became an instant force in the Big West last year in their first year of eligibility.
Unlike most other teams in the conference, UCSD does not have one player they depend on. True, Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones is one of the leading scorers in the league hovering just under 20 ppg all season. The 6’6”guard has a big height advantage and is among the team leaders in rebounds and assists. Still the Tritons have other threats, as their depth has allowed coach Olen to have 9 players averaging in double figure minutes per game. In addition to Tait-Jones, keep your eye on guards Tyler McGhie and Hayden Gray. Gray is extremely quick as shown by his 3+ steals per game. McGhie scores at a high rate. Both of them shoot around 40% from bey9nd the arc. These guys are scary good.
We’re at 14.5 point underdogs which is pretty much every line (except Irvine) that the Tritons have had in conference. This would be a massive upset. Somehow we have to slow them down like Irvine did in their first game.
Some important games on the docket for our playoff hopes. I think I’d like to see Fullerton win, CSUN and UCSB lose. And Irvine knock off Hawaii. I’d like to get more space (or maintain) over UCSB. We still have Northridge at home so we could catch them.
The Tritons are a deep, well rounded, disciplined team. They play hard and smart and they shoot 3's like crazy. We'll need play like we did when we upset Grand Canyon in there house in front of a big, loud crowd. This game could get away from us fast if we don't.
Yeah, the color guy doesn't even try to be objective. I was hoping the Ags would at least make the end of the game respectable and they didn't give up. The second half was close at 33-29.
What we learned from last year - they will run it up. — DrMike
...and they did again. UCSD is a really good basketball team but I don't like it when their coach keeps his starters in there just to run up the score in a blowout win. I'm not sure his bench players like it either. Pretty tough for them when they can't get any minutes when they're up by 29 and the game is a blowout.
That said, I think they're the best team in the league. They had us outmanned at nearly every position and they took advantage of our man defense whenever they got a mismatch and they have players with size that can take the ball inside and then burn you from deep as well. We couldn't stop them with our man-to-man defense and, when we tried a zone, they just drilled 3's.
Les didn't come out for the radio, post-game interview so you know he's not a happy camper. It's gonna be a long flight home. We need to put this one behind us and take care of business at home next week.
As good as San Diego is, the Ags did not play well, giving up more turnovers than assists and hitting less than a fourth of their 3 point tries. An upset was not in the cards, but I suspect Coach Les saw a lot of things the team failed to do. They definitely to get back to where they were in their sweep in SoCal last week if they want to have any chance for a tournament bye.
