At the midway point of Big West Play, the Aggies head south for two critical games, first against UC Riverside. Quoting Big West Banter: “Mike Magpayo is the best hoops coach Riverside has had in their D1 history. As written, in the first three years he coached Riverside, they had a winning record, both overall and in Big West play.” Last year, the Highlanders had a decent season going 10-10 in Big West competition so with four returning starters, their expectations were high. This year they have had some disappointing losses including a loss away to Idaho, a loss at home to Hawai`i and being shellacked by UCI 81-57, albeit in Irvine. Now they come off a huge upset win over the Anteaters, plus a solid win away over Bakersfield which indicates they are much improved team. They’re now tied with UCD for third in the league.

Barrington Hargress is clearly UCR’s biggest offensive threat, averaging over 20 points a game, second leading scorer in the Big West after TY, the only player in the league with a higher scoring average. Last year at Riverside, the Ags were able to hold the then freshman guard to only 6 points. It will be much harder to hold him that low this year. UCR also has Joel Armotrading, the 6’ 10” center transfer from Cal Poly, who gathered in 13 rebounds against UCD in SLO last year. It should come as no surprise that he leads the Highlanders in rebounding at 6.8 rpg. contributing to UCR’s rank of third in the league in rebounds per game (38 rpg.).

i agree with the Big West Banter - Magpayo is a really good coach, and has brought a great deal of stability to a program that has floundered for many years prior to his arrival (look at their BWC record the 20 years before he came). they play smart, tough basketball which tends to mirror our approach. we beat them up last year by 20 down there, but they came back up north to beat us in a close one (one point game with 2:00 to go). we will be challanged again by their size inside.

Vegas has us as 6 point underdogs currently.

Good start up 8-1 at first break. Defense leading the way. Got to keep them off the boards

10-5 with 12 to go. Offensive glow has been bad the past few trips. Seems like we more stagnant with Chappell in there

Js aren't falling. I think the Ags have only hit one from outside the paint.

We’ve gotten sloppy and TY is ice cold; down 17-16 with 6:00 to go

Defensive battle; 20-20 4:00 to go.

BTW - this might be the best announcing crew in the conference. Very knowledgeable

Yes, they're very good. I'd put them alongside the Scott Marsh-BobWilliams team.

Finished on a run to end the half up 26-24. 1-11 from 3. Yikes

The teams are really evenly matched. The major difference for UCD has been TY, who really took over toward the end of the half. I didn't realize that we have been 9-0 when leading at the half. Hope that hols up today.

    he’s got a nice stroke.

Gotta stop their 3’s from the stretch. Up 56-55 4:00 to go. Not many fouls being called

What a heartbreaking loss. The way Sevilla and Daughtery started hitting their shots, I thought the Ags had this one. Odd that Sevilla was on the bench in the last few minutes. Odd too, was that the two halves were so different with the 3s not falling for either team in the first half, then both teams shooting better in the second half.

he was on the court at the end, right? I thought that’s who TY was throwing to

Yes, just checked the replay. He got back in the game with 1:34 left.

Tough loss for the Ags. Both teams kept battling back and forth for the whole game and the Ags just came up 2 points short. We need to put this one behind us and focus on getting an upset at Irvine on Saturday.

    From Bob Dunning's Substack column:

"I can't fault our energy and our desire, but they just made one more play than we did," said Aggie head coach Jim Les afterward.

"It's hard to get a win on the road, but we battled the whole way and gave ourselves a chance to win. We had a little bit of a breakdown on their three-pointer at the end. That's not the look we wanted to give them."

As it turns out, that was the only score that Pickens had in 26 minutes of action.

    Ty Johnson 8 / 25 = 32%
    Other players 16 / 33 = 49%

Rocak and Seville solid game, Jac Mani 0 / 2,
DeBruhl and Tamba only had 3 FG attempts.

Bench points: UCR 21, Ags 9

Sevilla played a terrific game. I think he was out for a few minutes to give him gas for the last minute of the game. It was a shame that TY made the errant pass. It happens. It's not like TY didn't do a lot to help the Ags cause.

Did we have a TO left at that point?

Still lots to like for the Ags but toward the end of games they lose intensity - and for good reason: they expend a huge amount of energy. We just don't quite have the depth to sustain the effort for 40 minutes. Although, as I think about it, they could have uniform depth and it would still be difficult to sustain the energy they bring at the start of the game.

I'd use Ty as a decoy and let a better 3-point shooter take the last shot.

I think that’s what they’ve been doing with Sevilla, that is, setting him up to shoot the 3.

we did have a TO; we used it after they hit the 3. By a guy who was scoreless up to that point!
  • Toke69

That's got to be one of the toughest ways to lose. Being ahead by a slim margin after a back and forth game, then turning the ball over and seeing some scoreless guy sink a desperation shot.
