The Gauchos have figured things out since the lost to UCD in December. At that point, they were 0-2 in Big West play but Coach Pasternak has put together a 4 game conference winning streak including a road win at Hawai`i. This is not the same team the Aggies handled in Davis. Big man Kenny Pohto has become one of the leading rebounders in the league (7.6 rpg) as well as UCSB’s leading scorer. Fans will remember him scoring 16 points and hauling in 9 rebounds with his 6’11” frame. The Gauchos have three other players averaging in double figures, so this is far from a one man show. ESPN+ will telecast as usual. Go Ags! Win one more for the farm.

I'll miss this one live, but I'll be watching the replay later.

This is a 1:00 tip off. This is one bad thing about streaming - can’t easily switch from ESPN+ to the NFL game.

I'll probably have the Aggie game going on my laptop with the NFL game on the TV. I often do that when the men's and women's games overlap. Sometimes I'll skip the one or the other live and watch it recorded or on demand later. Sports are about the only thing I can multi-task all at once!

From the Big West Banter by Gauchodan. (Note: Stephan Swenson hit a buzzer beater 3 in each of the Gaucho's last two games beating Riverside and Cal Poly).

Every time you think the Aggies (10-8, 4-3) are finished they bounce back with a good performance. UC Davis shot just .414 at Cal Poly, but that was its best shooting outing vs. a Division I team in almost a month. The Aggies are 9-1 when they shoot 40% or better. UC Davis stays in games with its ball-hawking defense, which forces 16.3 turnovers per game. TY Johnson is leading the conference at 20.4 points per game.

Stephan Swenson, we are getting bored by your one-dimensional game. Tie-breaking, game-winning three-pointers from the left wing as the clock expires? Yawn. In all seriousness, it’s uncanny. It’s like Swenson has some song in his head that helps him beat the buzzer. The Gauchos (12-5, 4-2) have needed Swenson’s last tick heroics because they have not gotten consistent offense or rebounding from the rest of the team. One player who is red-hot again is Cole Anderson, who would be leading the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (.513) if he qualified (he falls short with 2.4 threes per game when you need 2.5). Anderson is 14 for 18 (.778) from distance over the last 3 games.

Ags win! Big sweep. TY was a one man wrecking crew. Niko was very good. Defense in the first half was stifling and we didn’t turn the ball over.

TY is making his way up the all time scoring list. One name ahead of him that surprised me was Silar Schneider. I hadn’t realized he had that many points.

Just saw the game and it's pretty clear who carried the Aggies in this one. Good to see TY get his mojo back, which we saw signs of up in SLO. Credit to the Gauchos, whose shooting was awful in the first half, for not folding and coming back from being down 18. Made it a bit too exciting down the stretch.

Cooper had a nice trip. He was solid vs Poly.

His dad, Michael Cooper, had his number retired Monday by the Lakers. Good week for the family!

Irvine beats Poly 101-71 to give Mustangs NCAA record for consecutive conference loses. If you’re gonna set the record, make a statement by losing by 30!

It looks like Poly's conference losing streak is the longest, currently active streak but it's not an NCAA recored. The following is from The Big West Banter by Gauchodan:

A small kerfuffle broke out on X Thursday night after Cal Poly lost its 45th consecutive Big West regular season game. Some guy posted that the Mustangs had tied the NCAA record held by Grambling State, which I had debunked the other night, and he tagged a bunch of mid-major college basketball accounts in the process. Cal Poly play-by-play man Chris Sylvester jumped in, basically saying, “Wut?” To clear things up, Cal Poly has the longest “active” conference streak and it’s the 3rd longest of all time. Colgate is 2nd at 47 (1984-87) and U. of Chicago lost 60 in a row 1940-46. The Mustangs (6-13, 0-7) weren’t expected to have this continue based on their non-conference body of work, but here we are.

It was great to see Rocak with 10 points and 10 boards to go along with his stellar defense. I hope we continue see more of that.

if we can get the starting five all clicking on a given night, we can be tough. Pablo has been, almost literally, up and down. Niko hasn’t been part of the offense most night. And Leo and Sevilla are still not shooting like we expect.

This weird scheduling makes it tough to see where we stand even after 8 games. Similar for teams that drew Irvine or UCSD twice.

speaking of brutal losing streaks, out in my neighborhood Livermore High has lost 115 straight EBAL games, last winning in 2014. Across town, Granada has been a perennial playoff team even winning a NorCal title a couple years ago. Open boundaries so any decent player in town enrolls at Granada, and they’ve found ways to get good players to transfer in. Hopefully, a new coach this year ends the streak.

So the "transfer portal" is alive and well even at the high school level....is NIL next...??
  • abridge

I gather the transfer portal isn't a thing at all now. Players can leave school, enroll at another, and play immediately.

So many questions about this idiocy. No idea of an equitable solution but what we have isn't it.

    He had one solid game.

His shooting percentages for the year aren't great:

    This year.....23-24
    FG: ..378.......443
    3Pt: .219.......321
