The Gauchos come to town looking to end a two game losing streak - to Cal Poly at home and UC Riverside on the road. The Aggies may need to guard against a letdown following a tough win over Cal Poly on Thursday, and having beaten UCSB decisively in their early-season visit to the Thunderdome. First year head coach Renee Jimenez has the Gauchos playing well offensively, ranking 3rd in the Big West in scoring offense.
Fifth year senior Aalyssa Marin (16.61 ppg.) leads UCSB and the Big West in scoring. Junior Skylar Burke and sophomore Zoe Porter add 10.5 and 9,4 ppg, respectively. Burke also leads the Gauchos in rebounding at 6.3 rpg, with redshirt junior center Laurel Rockwood adding 5.7 boards a game.. As a team, Santa Barbara is by far the Big West leader in FT %-age at 82.5%.
All of those 3 points were on FT's also. The Ags didn't score a FG from the 3:30 mark of the first quarter for the next 17 minutes.
I think the thing that is most concerning about this game is that the Gauchos just simply outplayed the Aggies after the first quarter. They were more aggressive, more physical and more determined and the Ags got flustered, turned the ball over and couldn't make a basket. No coach wants to see their team allow that to happen on their home court.
UCD started well, but seemed to run out of energy after missing a couple of shots. The Gauchos played hard for 40 minutes. Ryann Bennett led a run in the third quarter, and the Aggies cut into the lead. She was getting to the basket and drawing fouls. Energized the crowd. You could feel a comeback starting. Then Davis went away from her in the fourth. She barely touched the ball. Mystified? How do you go away from the hot player?
