What are people’s thoughts on whether Sac States's announcement of a move up to FBS would push us to announce a similar move?

I think Davis has essentially already announced an FBS move, just without a specific timeline.

Sports reporter, Michelle Dapper of KCRA channel 3, covered the official introduction of Brennan Marion and said, "expect a big announcement about Sac's football stadium soon." It's obvious that Sac is all in and they are gung-ho to do whatever it takes to move up to the FBS preferably the PAC12.

At this point, it appears that they are taking a "build it and they will come" approach. There has been unconfirmed talk that the PAC12 Committee has lined up potential big donors from Sacramento businesses and local area Indian Casinos including $50 million in NIL money but it may depend on whether they get an invite to the PAC12 or a major FBS conference.

They've hired a up and coming head coach who seems to be following the style of Deion Sanders at Colorado where you come in and abruptly clean house by dismissing a lot of the players currently on the roster and bring in a huge number of new players from all over the country. It looks like they are taking a "win at any cost" approach where they are willing to embrace the new era of "professional college football" that involves players chasing big NIL deals and academics and character take a back seat to winning.

I think that Sac State and the SAC12 committee see that the PAC12 needs an 8th football playing school to have any chance of being relevant - or even surviving. The PAC12 also needs a media deal. The 2 needs are definitely linked. The longer things go without one or the other of those 2 needs being fulfilled, the better Sac State's chances.

I would prefer we announce an FBS move with or before sac state.

I think Davis has to evaluate their own situation first and foremost. We either have a financial plan, a build plan, a transition plan, and this has all been discussed in detail with the affected programs and donors or we don't and we're just blowing smoke.

    I agree.

I think one part of that is becoming year-in, year-out competitive with the Dakota and Montana schools. N. Dakota State has been an FCS power going back to the Jim Sochor era at UCD. But they haven’t made a move to go FBS. I imagine it’s been discussed in—house.

Our AD has stated that those schools have some facilities and other things in place that we don’t. Makes sense to become comparable to their programs before trying to move up.

sac State’s president is in sales and marketing. I’ve always like the Dilbert cartoon that likened marketing to “liquor and guessing” although Wood is more smooth smoke blowing. Davis has the better leader (Chancellor May) by far.

It’s not poaching when you bring in a bunch of players that have been cut from or kicked off their previous team. At least Santi Hall was on the roster for Causeway, most of these guys will not.

Let’s not worry too much about Sac State. It looks like we will be FBS. I hope we are at least competitive.

It seems like it's just in Sac's DNA to be loud and flashy when it comes to boasting about the future of their athletics. I remember when John Volek was their head coach and he said Sac was about to become "the Florida State of the west" and that they wouldn't be playing teams like Davis anymore once they became a major football power.

Check out the scoreboard in the video of the renovations that Sac plans to make at The Well...Sac 57 Aggies 36...

not gonna lie, I know this may be a temporary stadium but I don’t really see how it’s that much better than the current stadium other than a few extra rows… I don’t really understand what’s taken them so long

his BA/MA from Sac State, PhD from Arizona State and was a professor at San Diego State. His major was Ethnic Studies and his thesis involved interviewing 28 college students where he identified themes such as focus, family, motivation, employment, attendance, and completing homework as important factors to success of minority students. I’m not saying social sciences are unimportant but come on the premise of this thesis is kind of like asking 28 people if the world is still round. How would that defense go any way other than golf clapping in an echo chamber? The Wood brothers seem like narcissistic self-promoters who thrive on suspense and drama. They have found a successful business model to peddle this, so good for them I suppose. Though it is probably more appropriate for Six Flags to tease next season’s new ride than a university president. His thin-on-specifics braggadocio reminds me of someone else. I bet I could draw him into a twitter debate on hand size.

I wonder if if a coincidence that this rash of BIG announcements are coming with the students on break? Seemed to be some pushback back in fall when they are taking new stadium/arena

Did you expect a scholar as a Cal State University President? Not many hard science students at the school, maybe none.

Business: The most popular major, with 935 graduates
    Psychology: 607 graduates
Criminal Justice and Safety Studies: 568 graduates
    Communications: 448 graduates
    Early Childhood Education: 436 graduates
Physical Education Teaching and Coaching: 301 graduates
    Computer Science: 300 graduates
    Biology: 294 graduates
    Sociology: 273 graduates
    Nursing: 196 graduates

I mean, in certain fields, if you want to be an elementary teacher, marriage therapist, or accountant, Sac State is a good school, perhaps more relevant than Davis. Social scientists can be scholars and I have every expectation that the leader of a CSU campus would be one. Not all scholars are good leaders (see Katehi) but this guy’s qualifications to lead a major university are squishy and I read his 23-point strategic plan and almost all of them are either DEI or athletics/fundraising related, with a few nonsense items like Combat U. His top priority academic plan is creating a “general studies” certificate.

As BlueGoldAg said previously, we’re fortunate to have Chancellor May. But to be fair, we also had Linda Katehi who did some positive things, but also made some decisions that were far more damaging to UCD’s reputation than anything Luke Wood has done so far. I see that fugawe09 just referenced this.

Davis campus leadership also was so sure that Bob Hamilton was over the hill that they pushed him out and, with poor due diligence, hired Lonnie Williams, who had falsified his resume. Williams was terminated after one season when players revolted.

Good for Sac that their president is interested in football, but is it a little odd he only tweets about football? Is anything else of note happening at the school?
