Vick has no coaching experience. He is also apparently in similar talks with Norfolk State. He was born and raised in the Newport News and Hampton Roads area.

Norfolk State would be a good starter for him. He is local and has connections with the area.

Pretty sloppy reporting all around by Schefter. As previously discussed, Sac is not actually currently "building" a new stadium, nor do they have the largest NIL fund in the country (obviously). It's all vaporware today.

Hiring Vick seems like it would be a desperate swing for the fences on name recognition alone. I'm not saying it's impossible for him to be a good coach, but I'm not sure I would want to hire a guy with no coaching experience to SUPPOSEDLY be leading a team into the FBS.

Didn’t Vick coach the team on the longest yard, lol?

This is like if Sac State was a contestant on a reality tv show and the producers are like we can get this guy to do anything for the camera.

We'll see if the bigger conferences bite on this circus peanut.

Vick is a huge name, and I for one believe in redemption. He did his time and now is back in the saddle...but yeah, what kind of a coach, or program builder is he REALLY? I get hiring a huge name to get a conference interested...and the donor base, you can lose your ass in years 1 and 2 of the transition, blame it on the jump up and go hire a budding OC or DC from a Power 4 program and start the real football... heck, maybe Vick wins games, and you want to keep him.

Still, this feels like the hype train.

Maybe they could hire Kevin Johnson to coach basketball, too.

I don't get free Sacramento Bee articles, and this is the most I can copy:

"National reports that former NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Mike Vick was closing in on becoming the next football coach at Sacramento State are premature at best, the Hornets confirmed Monday afternoon.

Two Sacramento State officials told The Sacramento Bee that Vick being selected to head the Hornets’ football program are not true as the school seeks to find a replacement for Andy Thompson, who left the Hornets after two seasons as head coach to rejoin Troy Taylor, this time as assistant head coach at Stanford.

Taylor hired Thompson before the 2019 season at Sacramento State as defensive coordinator, and the two enjoyed winning three Big Sky Conference championships. Sacramento State won three games this season amid a crush of injuries and tight, close losses, a year after making the FCS playoffs for the fourth consecutive season."

I think this a great move. Kids will be excited to play for Vick. Could get big recruits off the jump as Deion 2.0.

I think this is a good move if it’s true…

Michael Vick reporting dispute between ESPN's Schefter, Sacramento Bee reporter

    https://www.sfgate.com/collegesports/article/espn-sacramento-state-dispute-michael-vick-19984939.php

They go in- depth in that article. I'll just highlight one part that is interesting to me:

"The ESPN reporter wrote that the school “has over $50 million in NIL.” If that seems like an astounding total, it’s because it is. The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel noted that this would amount to 2.5 times the size of Ohio State’s roster. Not only that, but the number is a bit of a miscalculation. Davidson pointed out that the total is supposed to be money pledged over the span of a decade from a booster group that is dependent on Sacramento State’s entering the Pac-12 — a head-spinning endeavor on its own."

Messy. The contrasting differences between UC Davis and Sacramento State couldn’t be more evident.

It ain’t hard to start connecting dots that this is probably about getting Sac State to help pay for the new MLS stadium, and to sweet talk some politicians into more Indian casinos and maybe a sports betting deal - for which the PAC12 brand is important. Pack the pork barrel with some preselected contractors and then hire a company owned by the president’s brother to run the venue, or maybe even to own the venue and lease it back to CSUS at a markup

Legislators routing tax dollars to and getting campaign donations from contractors and labor unions, tribal casinos and Sac president’s brother getting consulting fees. I mean, what could go wrong???

Add to that Michael Vick, and maybe add in some drug manufacturing scheme to generate “revenue” and you have yourself one whale of a Netflix documentary or series. Maybe “Breaking SAC12”.

if the Wood brothers are 41, that places them as student body president around the time of the PAM incident, so make sure that ends up in the 60 Minutes episode.

dude seems like a nice guy but everytime he has a press conference or posts something on twitter, he sounds like he’s gonna say “just wait! If you give me 5 months, the best, the greatest, car (stadium and conference option) will be revealed! And get this! You get this deal and this tax write off blabababa”

I cannot take seriously a university who appoints a president the same age as me. We are not supposed to be in positions of authority like that.

I don’t think age always has to be a disqualifier. Kevin Blue is about the same age and was very qualified at AD. From what I understand on the Sac forums, Wood, like Blue is more accessible than most university executives with personal replies and remembering interactions. But my take on his interviews is similar to others— car salesman. And I think he shows insecurity when he tries to argue with people on twitter who question his agenda. I think the Wood brothers are more invested in boosting themselves (which they are very good at) than the university and I think Sac State is just enjoying a ride in fast car. But like all joyrides, you eventually crash or get kicked out when the adults get home.
