• Week 2: #23 UC Davis @ #2 Weber State
Wildcat has so far been just a rumor as they’ve only had one direct snap run in two games, and Gilliam took it.
Personally I’m curious what Tompkins can do, not so much out of the wildcat formation but with the same plays where we see Rodrigues run, assuming Tompkins can be a credible passer as well.

We don’t know if Tompkins is one of those guys who throws wearing gloves. He’s been reported as unusual in that he doesn’t need the laces on his fingers to throw, so maybe gloves don’t hinder him.
He has been in for four plays, only one of which could be called a wildcat, and he wasn’t the guy who got the direct snap, so he’s never been the wildcat QB so far., he wasn’t a QB on the play.

. CJ Hutton got four carries in this game and hardly appeared in Idaho game. Crawford and Babb also got carries. It worked ok initially although we had the one play where Hutton’s timing crossing in front of the QB contributed to a mishandled snap. But it was essentially his first game. I hope they keep using it with those three getting the ball occasionally. We gained 33 yards on seven carries with those guys, although some of those may not have had the fly action.

    Those are meaningful stats
We had bad field position to start a lot of drives., as you point out 5 punts inside the 20, and the initial kickoff where we started on the 3 yard line.

18 QB rushes and just one catch by Harrell, Vaughn, and Castles show they were able to take away, or we abandoned what is usually a big part of our attack. Our offense relied a lot more on runs by slot backs and the quarterback than we usually see. Maybe that’s by choice or maybe the usual guys weren’t open.

What’s the story with Nick Eaton? 2nd start with no tackles according to the stats. This position switch isn’t working out.
  • Week 2: #23 UC Davis @ #2 Weber State
No one saw the penalty. We’ve had three penalties one the tick tak holding on Babb in the first half that have been very devastatingly timed
  • Week 2: #23 UC Davis @ #2 Weber State
Too many QB runs in a possession.
Our best drives were early not much happening of late on offense.

coaches only speak highly of opponents before the game
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
Not disputing any thing you said. Money was a factor but also we could recruit better as a D2 team with a perennial winning record, than we could as a transition team not eligible for the playoffs, or a team playing in an unknown conference against very good football teams like North Dakota State and South Dakota State etc.. It’s more fun being 9-2 than 6-5 or 5-6. And we didn’t get any more publicity being D1A than we did as D2.
  • Week 2: #23 UC Davis @ #2 Weber State
Weber didn’t seem as physically dominant against Idaho State as they’ve looked against us in the past, or than they were against Idaho State last year, judging by last years box score. Weber had some mismatches against inexperienced cornerbacks that they used to break open the game in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, after which I stopped watching. We have more experience than ISU among our defensive backs so their freshman QB may have a tougher time.
Anyway, maybe we’ll be more competitive this year.

if it was a player, how do they determine exposure to be limited to three?
Pick a exposure time and study the game film? Five minutes bad but 4 minutes ok? Is it players that touched the infected person, like made a tackle, or patted each other on the butt after the game. Whatever the method is, it’s arbitrary.

Hear Hear! So much self satisfaction among Californians.
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
My theory is Biggs and staff were pretty good coaches in 2005-2006. I think the GreatWest Conference while offering outstanding competition, was obscure and hurt recruiting; I don’t think we got much of a bump up in recruiting from moving to D1. I think that’s changed now that we are in a higher visibility conference and this team is much more athletic than the 2005 team.
Secondarily, it’s harder than I thought.
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
When Hawkins took over after Gould, I was sure that his style of football would enable the occasional upset of better teams.
Defeating a ranked 1AA team didn’t seem like it would be a challenge when we were leaving D2. In 2005, we almost beat New Hampshire which was ranked number 7 just before we beat Stanford. To go through a decade without accomplishing it once seems very strange.

    This is depressing;
Saturday's win over Idaho marks the first time UC Davis has beaten a team ranked in the Stats Perform Top 25 (previously STATS, Inc and The Sports Network) since a 22-21 win at Cal Poly on November 13, 2010...
From Weber preview on team site,

My guess, and it’s only that, is they had a number of players exposed but that none had tested positive prior to the game.
Once one of those guys test positive then his circle of contacts might have involved more players. I doubt many are infected but they had some exposure and that circle got bigger.
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
Trent Tompkins subbed in the play before the direct snap to Gilliam, .Tompkins came in after Rodrigues tried to run up the middle.
The first play Tompkins was in was a handoff to Gilliam
On the wildcat play Tompkins before the snap moved over from behind center toward the right, so Tompkins was just a decoy moving away from where the play went.
Just a bad series of plays, nothing complicated about it. After first and goal at the 6, three plays right up the middle.
In a sense, a direct snap to a running back alone in the backfield is the exact opposite of a trick play.
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
This is regard the view expressed by just one of the Tubs guys about Davis moving the ball with a lot of gains coming from trick plays.
Davis had four possessions in the first half.
A drive of 71 yards, ending on the four yard line, a three and out, and a drive of 75 yards for a touchdown. Finally the 27 second possession to end the half.
Was there another “trick play” besides Crawford’s pass? What are we calling trick plays? Does this include screen passes, fly sweeps, runs by the quarterback? Perhaps they are referring to the direct snap to Gilliam, but since that didn’t work it shouldn’t be evidence of the claim that we moved the ball a lot with trick plays.
We seemed like we were trying to move the ball early without using the QBs arm. I think his third pass came with about 4 minutes left in the first half. I think we were trying to make it easy for Rodrigues to get acclimated.
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
He is listed on the roster as being Number 5. Even the Idaho coach mentioned number 5 in his press call last week. So of course he wore 53. Chubba Maae listed as 53 wore 92. Both were listed as 53 in the depth chart.
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
Not knocking them, it’s always a question if your team got beat or lost of their own accord.
By now, I expect every team knows Crawford might throw when he gets the ball by other than a forward pass. If it works I don’t see that as something we shouldn’t get credit for.
