  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
Pondering the big questions that come to mind when watching the Tubs video above:
When Crawford throws a pass, which he does fairly often, is it a trick play?
If your team get burned by that is it not their fault?
If Davis runs the ball right up the gut play after play in the fourth quarter is it your team losing because your front seven is too good to allow that if they were in the right frame of mind, or is it because Davis is winning with a good run game?

Eaton needs to play. He was not just good, he was great. I can see trying him in the “ rush” position, but if that means he’s off the field for most plays it’s a mistake.

There is a lot of room for growth with this team. We have to improve on defense but we should expect to with the young guys playing. Eaton is a major force that we didn’t have today.
This may be the deepest offensive talent we’ve ever had, we're just figuring out how to use it. Now that the coaches have seen how Rodrigues can play in game conditions I think they’ll be more aggressive throwing the ball early. In today’s game we weren’t utilizing our wideouts enough until the two minute drill near end of first half. Few teams can cover our receivers if we have a QB who can make the throws and find the open man.

    I think that’s right.

Did Nick Eaton play? The box score on website says he started as #5 but I don’t think anyone saw him.
    He had no stats.

I think Chubba Maae was the most surprising player for those of us not involved with the team. A true freshman starting and playing a large percentage of the snaps. Even with Idaho dominating time of possession they left him in there which attests to his endurance as he weighs 360lb. Had five tackles.
Another freshman with a surprising amount of playing time was Teddy Buchanan. Freshmen linebackers historically don’t play much, and he is listed with 5 solo tackles. A third freshman Jackson Cloyd had three total tackles in his first collegiate game. So that’s three Freshmen making 13 tackles total.
But did anyone mention Idaho played freshmen?

I was kidding about not knowing why some were nervous.
Even the play calling in the first quarter looked like the coaches didn’t have faith in Rodrigues
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
I don’t know why we were ever nervous, had it all the way
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
I don’t recall a drive like that on the ground in a close game
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
They are playing a number of freshmen, more than normal on first game of a season.
They are looking good on offense. The chop block thing is probably a difference of opinion between the ref and our o line coach, not sloppy.
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
Rodrigues has been good, needs to keep throwing downfield, like he started to do second quarter. Idaho is tough to run against.
On defense we need to rotate the big guy Cubba . I wonder if Suani is there.

Do the Davis announcers say anything noteable?
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
And we’ve learned about potatoes, their freshmen linemen but not ours.
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
    I’m watching Pluto on TV.
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
We need to get the ball to multiple receivers. They are supposedly inexperienced in the secondary. Our strength against their weakness, if the QB can do it.
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
Chubba was really gassed, after playing almost every down. Until the last few. Substitution really helped.
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
    That narrows it down some
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
Who is number 92 on defense?
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ Idaho
I think Rodrigues starts due to most experience. He played a year at JC and has been with us for two years, played at Stanford game and got our touchdown, But I doubt he’s the top guy.
Then who knows? Could be Hastings, he was the first guy we got a commitment from one year, and we were recruiting him after we had the others.
The other two guys are the most interesting stories though; I want to see them play.
