Agree with all your comments except we don’t have anything to go by in judging the 2021 class as none of them played. The 2020 class had twenty recruits and a lot of impact. Hopefully the 2021 class not getting on the field was just due to depth. Looked good on paper but a smaller group.

The 6’4” tall wide receiver from Redlands Laviel Pickett doesn’t appear to have run track, but played football basketball and baseball. A recruiting site says he signed with Davis to play baseball. I can see how he didn’t have time for track.

Probably learned something during his year at cal. Went through spring camp as well as the fall, so that’s a lot of coaching

looks from the highlights that Kraut is good as a ball carrier, as is Hutton. One of the other guys might be the deep threat.

I hope they give him a shot at receiver

Did Hawkins indicate that Kraut will be a receiver?

Apparently they moved Deng to another position and opened up the inside linebacker spot for Tattersall, but he couldn’t hold on to the job. Had decent stats though. When he lost the job they first moved a former safety into the position, which maybe indicated they wanted more speed on defense or pass coverage. In our situation, I think we can use a little more size at inside linebacker. The way the tackling rules are these days, it’s hard to bring backs down. I suspect he has decent speed. Maybe he thought he wouldn’t get another opportunity to start there and since he could graduate, it was time to look for a better situation.

I think Newman could start right away, but I hope they have a competition for the job with Dixon and Harper included in addition to Tompkins and Hastings. Can Newman participate in spring practice??

The most surprising get is Tattersall, who apparently has two years of eligibility left and started the first four games for Cal in 2021 and had ten tackles against Sac State. We lost 2 guys who played a lot minutes at inside linebacker for us in Hansen and Scharetg, so he definitely fills a need, He’s listed as a grad student. We could be really strong at linebacker.

I imagine Kraut would like to play on offense, since they list him as a receiver and he came here. We sure shored up the receiving corp after losing the three guys who of were big contributors there.
As regards to PWO, I thought there was some rule against the school including the in the NLI press release.

I wonder how much eligibility Newman has. Can Cal time count as a redshirt year?

A big day for the Sonoma County recruits, especially if Antonini sends in his commitment.
Kraut from Santa Rosa, Newman from Sebastopol, and Antonini from Petaluma.

Grad school isn’t for everyone and I don’t think grad schools want to enroll people who aren’t really planning to get the degree. I don’t think there is a grad school that will give a degree in a year, except a teaching credential. If they allowed a second bachelors degree, someone might want to do that and could earn that in a year.. I don’t think there is a strong enough incentive for someone to play a fifth or sixth year here, as Gilliam and Perryman and probably soon others illustrate. That’s why looking at the roster with a view toward remaining eligibility is deceiving. Guys might stay an extra quarter, but if it’s a year probably not.

You do an amazing job with this list and it’s much appreciated.

For the next couple of years we are going to see players not returning for their last year of eligibility. Rodrigues is a 2016 high school grad, Crawford a 2017 HS grad. Crawford and many others of the junior class has been enrolled for 17 13 quarters already, so with full loads would have 255 195 units after 2021 fall.

Registering for classes after completing 225 units historically required permission from the dean, which I suppose they’d be given. If they graduate UCs historically haven’t allowed students to enroll without a degree objective or for a second bachelors degree. We can’t offer grads short term degree objective like most schools can.

Hawkins may have started freshmen but has he ever started a true freshmen at QB, anywhere? Cody Hawkins, Ryan Dinwiddie, Jared Zabransky all redshirted. I don’t know about at Willamette.

I think the younger QBs on the roster Harper and Dixon are likely going to get a look, whereas they didn’t last year. They’ve now been through a couple of camps so maybe they’ve shown something.
I love having Tompkins take some snaps and I’d like to see him expand the envelope of what he does out there, but I don’t think he’s an every down quarterback. He could change my mind with a few completions.

Filipe Figueroa is from the class of 2019. I’m curious about the really young guys who graduated from HS this spring two recruiting classes later. We signed nine or ten, some with three stars or had interest from a few FBS schools. Very atypical for none of those guys to play other than a few minutes in one sided games. Contrast that with the class of 2020 that had guys playing big roles immediately, like Larison, Hutton, Maae, Buchanan and others.

Seems likely we’re looking at a class about the same size as the 2021 recruiting class. Those 2021 recruits, probably due to the COVID free year given to everyone else, saw little action. However, it was ranked as one of the better recruiting classes in the Big Sky. The running back from Marin Catholic Matteo Perez got some praise early on.
Has anyone heard that any of those recruits looked good in practice?

Interesting contrast between this and the the Nathaniel Hackett press conference. Hackett reportedly builds relationships with players, and it looks like McCaffrey’s main problem is not building any relationships with his players.
  • Aggie Nathaniel Hackett lands Denver HC job
The use of y’all from a guy who spent much of. his career in Northern California, upstate New York, and Wisconsin was kind of unexpected.
Seems like a good guy, it will be interesting to see how he does.
