It will be interesting to see how committed we will be to the jet or fly sweep with Speckman moving on. If you look at his video on the subject it was his base play. A lot of successful plays Davis had had some fly motion, even if the ball wasn’t given to the fly guy when he passed by, so it’s looking at it kind of narrowly to say it wasn’t effective, The motion made the defense respond in some predictable way. We’ll have some new philosophies with the new assistants, and maybe that will influence the playbook.

Very fluid delivery by Cody. Tompkins is still mentioned as being in the QB room.
Cody did list Newman was part of the group but don’t know when exactly they filmed the interview.
We have no transfer on the depth chart, except for the NG Uilsone Amone from JC.
    Edit: And Tattersall from Cal.

That strategy is not as sure to work in this situation. First, because of the short distance the whole team can go. 2nd, the COVID extra year results in more experienced players. This helps the FCS team more than the FBS team due to the law of diminishing returns, you can only play so many guys. Finally, one thing proved last year is that our players are fit, and usually owned the fourth quarter.
In 2010 we got beat in a lot of ways, but one was by a five star freshman who we couldn’t run with, in 2019 it was a big back playing power football.

I think so too, hence my wondering if we’ve changed the offense some for Dixon to maximize whatever his strengths are.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
Cal’s got to plan that it Hastings because they don’t have film on anyone else.
I wonder to what extent we’ve changed our offense to fit what Dixon does well. Dr. Mike indicated a few months back that he heard Dixon was a front runner. Hastings did some things well, like two minute offense, but he made some bad interceptions. It’s tough that when he got to play we were playing a tougher set of opponents. None of our QBs would have won one of our last three games, too many other shortcomings.

Cody has three offensive assistant coaches who have been passing game coordinators in previous stops.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
They no doubt have talent, but they’re going to be a little unsettled because of the change of personnel.
Davis is a lot more settled in that we have a lot of guys who’ve played together. The only big uncertainty with Davis is quarterback.
In the 2010 game a Cal freshman wide receiver playing in his first game dominated the game. So experience isn’t everything,

Hawkins doesn’t want to remember the 2006 Montana State team.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
Evan Bearden is a DT in the depth chart, and a TE on the roster..
Both the Connor brothers made it onto the depth chart.
Jaylin White not on the depth chart except as a returner?? He started 8 games last season.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
What explains the lack of information on the ucdavisaggies.com site?
Complacency because they drew well last year? That was a result of starting 8-1.
Equity because they don’t want the team to outshine women's field hockey? Likely.
I notice sac state has a series of position previews, proving team promotion is possible.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
Even if it a four deep at least it might have some new names
I’ve said this before but the guys who were true freshmen last year really didn’t get on the field. So we’ve got two classes of recruits we haven’t seen.

Thanks, that impressive. But what is missing is the information on the

    https://ucdavisaggies.com/sports/football/roster/nick-eaton/13466

Bios not updated to show fall 2021, and in the stats tab it doesn’t show the stats for that year.
If you select 2021 on the stats tab, it eventually populates, but it doesn’t show 2021 in career statistics.
That’s a really nice feature of the roster, as you can see how players did in various years and even games. But it’s broken.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
But Vaughn didn’t start last year.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
    Depends how you count.
We lost these guys who started games for us last year:
Perryman, Duncan, Scharteg, Rodgers, Nixon, Lamson, Rodrigues, Harrell

On the other hand we lost five guys who started almost every game,(Lamson missed a couple games due to injury)
    Harrell, Lamson, Perryman, Duncan, Rodgers.
But you could say we return 17 18 starters if you count the guy who filled in for Lamson I suppose.. Rachow, but that was due to injury.

Along the lines of missing information, they still haven’t updated the statistics tab in the roster to show 2021 stats. It seems they’re waiting until the last moment to do something that they had 9 months to accomplish. Or they haven’t noticed.

Then Davis is the perfect team for you to follow because there is next to nothing said about the team. I remember a story prior to a previous Cal game where a writer, I think from the Daily Californian said he couldn’t find any information about the team. And now there is less.

Here is a video interview of defensive coordinator Matt Coombs brief comments about defensive players
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ADecljRZX8
Players mentioned in more than passing, shows who’s on his mind.:
    DL Chubba Maae, Zach Kennedy,
Inside Linebacker Teddye Buchanan, Cole Hanson, Smalley, Mouisset, Evan Tattersall
Outside Linebacker Cam Trimble, Nick Eaton, Jackson Cloyd, Cade Peacock
Safety Chris Venable and a bunch of guys
    Corner Jehiel Budgett, Devon King
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
We just need a guy to be the deep threat. Overall, we have a lot of targets in Castles, Gilliam, Hutton, Babb, and the other candidates. The deep threat doesn’t need to be our number one receiver. I’m optimistic about the receivers.
We need depth on the offensive line. We really struggled when we had a couple of injuries. Remember the Cal Poly game when we couldn’t block that little guy?
On defense Rogers is the big loss because he could put pressure from the middle. Suani was improved in that regard at his lower weight, but he doesn’t have the reach. (I see we added a JC transfer who was a three star in high school Uilisoni Amone).
You have to like our depth at DB and Linebacker. Big decisions for the coaches how to use that.
  • Speckman moving on
Burke won a national championship at Mount Union and then won the Gagliardi Trophy twice (D3 MVP) the next two years.
