We’ve lost the last six games against teams at our level or higher. Hard not to find that discouraging. But none of those were we favored to win.
These games this year looked like football games and not the routs we experienced at the end of last year. It’s better to be frustrated with the coaches decisions than with the lack of talent on the team.
We played too conservatively on offense, making too many dump off passes, completing passes on third down short of the first down line , and the field goal decisions. Game plan was to avoid turnovers and not beat ourselves and that beat us. Defense isn’t good enough to play like you don’t need touchdowns.

I’m frustrated but also heartened by the close loss. The team matched up with Weber very well. We could run the ball against a really good defense, And we didn’t get run over. Our DBs are more athletic.
I think the coaches own this loss, but for little things like the play calling when we were not quite in make-able field goal range and ran Larison wide for a loss, and the two complete passes that got us back to 4th and 8. We have too many passes complete for yardage that doesn’t help, might as well have tried something downfield. An interception downfield is better than setting up a fifty yard field goal attempt when you have a kicker that doesn’t have the range.

I think the defense might be growing into something special. We’ve got some good young players. Blake Cotton had eight tackles,
Budgett played a bit but seemed injured, Rex Connors didn’t play, and Ambagtsheer and Suani haven’t played and they’re both on the depth chart so must be injured. That’s actually a lot of guys off our depth chart.

Yep. I think many foresaw that that would be our record after five games.
I think the school isn’t promoting the team like they did a couple of years ago, maybe lulled into complacency by last years attendance when we were nationally ranked most of the year.

The biggest controversy was where Dan was accused of blowing a lead by not running out the clock when continuing to throw gave Cody some record.

Yes. How many passes did we complete for virtually no gain, and how many did we complete short of the line of gain on third down. We have receivers coming back to the ball but not running deep enough to afford to do that.

This is the first Weber game in memory where we didn’t get physically beat.

Don’t focus on the missed fifty yarders but on the plays that gained no yardage on third down, precluding going for it on fourth. Trying 50 yard field goals is a prayer.
Not going for it at the goal line shows too much dependence on Tompkins. Especially with two linemen out they don’t think they can gain a yard.

I think they were playing an almost exclusive short passing game against Cal and SDSU due to fear they couldn’t pass protect.
We are playing personnel that aren’t really deep threats, guys with great speed and skill with catching deep balls. I don’t think Tompkins is a deep threat receiver, or Poerio, or Kraft, and Hutton is too short to throw it and hope he’s going to outjump someone down field. We play a lot of two tight ends and threw deep to Gale. Chaz Davis didn’t play against San Diego, and they still averaged 16 yards per reception,

Weber unquestionably should be favored in the game. The biggest reason is Davis barely beat them last year when they had their QB out, and aside from that win, they’ve owned Davis for years, and they have an impressive win against a what is probably a not very good FBS team.
Comparative stats don’t mean much after 3 games when Davis played two teams tougher than anyone Weber has played, and Weber has played a division 2 team.

Injuries influence lineup in all games so I don’t think we know if there is a trend. Big defensive linemen out vs Cal. But we’ve got more options in defensive linemen than we had last year.
We’ve been playing a number of new guys on defense a significant amount , at all positions. I think it’s going to jell, and then we can see what Combs wants to do.

Connors has been on the depth chart at middle linebackers since the start of the season. But Smalley said they recently moved Porter to join the in the Inside linebacker group, but didn’t say when. Both Smalley and Connors started, one in place of Buchanan. Buchanan is listed at weak side linebacker,
I don’t see how they split the linebackers up into two groups coached by different assistants in apparently different “rooms”. It seems guys move between inside and outside linebackers quite a bit.

2021 was a favorable schedule only because of the sequence of the games but the schedule this year isn’t tougher by a significant amount. League is about the same except for Montana State instead of Eastern Washington and this year we played South Dakota State in place of Dixie State.

Speaking of the block, Tattersall got that and made some other good plays. I think he’s going to end up starting or playing more,

The live camera didn’t capture the blocked punt or the Kraft touchdown, which was out of view at the back corner of the endzone. Games almost always show the punt, so that was unique.
