  • Week 2: UC Davis (0-1) @ South Dakota State (0-1)
I don’t see a link to watch this game on our schedule. The jacks have it as a pay to watch event. Any other options to watch it?
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
Just now regrouping after spending the day at Cal yesterday. Great turnout at the alumni tailgate and seeing old friends. Enjoyed hanging with Dr and Mrs Mike. $45 to park, ouch!
I thought Hasting’s did OK, although it would have been interesting to see Dixon get some snaps. And when Thompson is in, Cal had that figured out every time with the wildcat. Every other opponent will as well.
The guys played Cal tough. Hastings is lucky he only has 2 pics. Easily could have been 4 or 5. But he was throwing into coverage at every toss. Credit Cal. Their secondary was tenacious and they had real good speed, like that pic in the endzone when the Cal defender raced over to grab the pic. That was a razor sharp pass.
The Cal QB started off slow. Heck, how many 3 and outs did we get early? But then he got his mojo going. He’s going to be a really good QB for them. And the RB, #6, that dude has some real speed.
I see tons of potential for this team. Too bad were going from the frying pan to the fire.

Great turnout at the tailgate. Tons of positive energy for the Ags. Go Aggies!
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
This QB situation is unsettling, to say the least. Reminds me of the time we were prepping for Cal and our starter left for the ministry and Randy Wright ended up playing. I know Hawk is going to put us in the best possible position to win. I hope we’re getting the guy who was the best in camp. Is Newman really gone?

I’m with CA on the Hastings start. My memory might be off, but as i recall he really struggled in the last several games last year. With that said, maybe he’s a new man. Or maybe bait and switch?

BTW, are we limited on how many we can suit up? If not, bring every QB on the roster.

Very unusual for Bob to predict a loosing game for the Ags.

Today’s Bee has an article by Joe Davidson which reiterates Hawk’s comments about this being the best Aggie team ever. I really am torn regarding this boasting from Hawk. Saying they have a really good team is one thing, but “best ever” sets us up for disappointment in my mind.

I was hoping for more out of the fly sweep when it was apparent we were going that direction. But it seems like we do well out of the gate early in the season, then our films are studied, and we seem to go stale, or at least what we did early is not as effective later in the season. Hopefully with more beef up front, we can overcome some of that.

Wow, that was a comprehensive review.

“ I don't know about game time, but I just looked at a weather app and the predicted high for Berkeley on Saturday is 85. ”

I worked in Berkeley for a few years, commuting from the valley. I always had two sets of clothing to deal with the weather differential. I also took a look at the forecast. I always take a light coat when going there, looks like this trip is going to be more like a sombrero grande and sun lotion, wink.

“ Improved depth is never a bad thing, but I think this season rides or dies on if the QB play can take a step forward. It just wasn't where it needed to be last season.”

Yep, that. BTW, wasn’t it Randy that was thrown in against Cal as a freshman?

No inside info, but I’m still thinking Newman is going to get the start.
  • Doss to NY Giants
Nephew had (has) NFL size and skill. Real smart kid who played at Oregon state. I asked him why he didn’t chase the NFL. He said he had other plans, but one necessity according to him was that NFL prospects need to hire a conditioning trainer and coach to go into camp in top shape and form.

Who’s going to the caaa tailgate?
  • Men's Basketball 2022-23 Schedule
Are we ever the home team at Golden One? Every time I’ve gone it seems like J street has the home team announcers. And I will add we need to start beating these guys. Thankfully the ladies crush them.
  • Aggie Fest canceled
Yeah, its going to be hot. I’m on the coast in 70 degree weather hiding from the heat, wink.
  • Speckman moving on

I was wondering whether they would open up the recruitment or promote from within? Cody, lol?
  • Ags Picked 5th in Perseason Coaches and Media Polls

I hope Wilcox’s coaching skills are on par with his english skills, unless he is getting misquoted by the writer.
  • USC, UCLA eyeing Big Ten move by 2024

“ I think you almost have to be a season ticketholder for football and/or basketball at UC Davis to feel a real connection to the athletic program if you're a not-so-recent alumna/us (with the exception being former student-athletes + coaches). It's really the only way the athletic dept will engage with you and of course even that is motivated by money on some level.”
Well without money we wouldn’t have an athletic department. I’ve been a season ticket holder for a long time and when i compare UCD development to other programs I’m involved with i don’t feel a squeeze. But i think they do reach out to the community in general. For example the Aggie Fall Fest, https://ucdavisaggies.com/news/2022/7/22/athletics-aggie-fall-fest-set-for-aug-19, is a free community event for fans.
I have a hard time putting my finger on it, but many of todays students seem to have different priorities when it comes to sports than many of us had back in the day. The toomb would be filled to capacity, the student section would be packed, and they were loud. I guess between the portal and NIL, it will be interesting to see where we are in 10 years.
  • Gilliam Named Preseason Big Sky Offensive MVP also Gilliam, Pettek & Parks on 1st Team

“ I think you’ll see a new approach in the running game this year. No more trying to outmuscle the other team, and instead using our quickness to our advantage.”
Wasn’t that our approach during the D2 days? Maybe Hawk adjusts his offense based on the cards he’s holding. We went to that fast paced no huddle offense then abandoned it. It seems we did well with it as i recall.
  • Gilliam Named Preseason Big Sky Offensive MVP also Gilliam, Pettek & Parks on 1st Team

“ But I think we get beat in the trenches against the good teams. If we want to be good we need to improve in a lot of areas.”

At the first signing party after Hawk was hired, he made a point of saying that we needed size up front to compete with the top tier teams. He also said that process was going to take time, it wasn't going to happen overnight.

Gilliam’s numbers were off last season, and i always wondered if the OL and QB situation made us so predictable the D could stack the box and shut him down. Did that play a role in him entering the portal?
