  • Mike Moroski Leads College of Idaho to 1st Championship Since 1955
Man, I am sorry that I don't remember you. Spring of '77 I wasn't around (spent a quarter in DC at NIH), and then I transferred to Santa Barbara, only saw a few of your games. Bowin, Brown and I played jv hoops together in high school, so i am pretty sure you guys (with the exception of Mo) sucked at basketball--sorry, I've been talking smak to those two guys about hoops, and everything else for over 50 years now, just a habit.

Just spoke to Bowin the other day, he was trying to find John Riley, another pitcher in 77 and 78. If by chance you have a line on Riles, drop me a private message.

Very happy for Moroski. Two of my closest friends from childhood, I am still close with and we converse regularly. Steve Brown and Jim Bowin, both pitched for the Aggies alongside Mo back in the day, I love sending them these updates.
  • Week 11, UC Davis at PSU
Blue Devils were seeded a bit lower than expected, but won their first-round game at home Friday night. Play #3 Inderkum at their field this week.

Their resurgence has been spectacular, and caused me to pay attention from afar. They were looking to drop the program, with the recent attention to head injuries, and with Davis being
Davis. Former Aggie assistant Steve Smyte returned as coach; he had been eased out in 2012 by administration, but took the high road and burned no bridges/aired no dirty laundry. His individual efforts are a wonderful demonstration of how much difference one coach can make, although you'll never ever hear him say that. His approach to the student as a complete person and member of the community, not just a football player, is Aggie Pride through and through. He was also at Boise as an assistant a while back, but I think it was after Hawk. (I've met Steve once, but I do not know him personally).

Here's an overview of Smyte: https://www.davisenterprise.com/sports/gallaudet-football-tab-do-not-publish-08-13/

And his bio on the DSHS website: https://dshs.djusd.net/athletics/fall_sports/Blue_Devils

I don't know which of the kids are potential recruits, one of their two quarterbacks has offers from Whittier and Occidental (doesn't really have an arm for college, imho), and the best player is committed to Colorado. I assume some will be Aggies soon.

I apologize if this is in the wrong place, or otherwise inappropriate, please remove or let me know if so. But I do have a lot of love and pride for my old school. If you mess with the Blue Devils, you get the horns!

  • Great Article About Former Aggie QB Khari Jones
Thanks for posting that, enjoyed the read. I saw a couple of games when Khari was QB, but I was oblivious to his pro playing career, and his coaching story. Now I'm a solid Als fan.

The article made me think back to a couple of players in my day who did some acting as students. There was a standout tailback in 74-75, Rickey Hamilton, who was also quite good on the stage. He was pursuing an acting career, but died suddenly, tragically just a couple of years after leaving UCD, brain hemorrhage if I recall. Haven't thought of Rickey in quite a while.
  • Week 9: Weber State @ UC Davis
A steady, methodic buttkicking. Another disappointment. Hope they're better next week up at Portland.
  • Week 9: Weber State @ UC Davis
I didn't notice the front, I usually focus on the D backfield. Makes sense, we'll see.
  • Week 9: Weber State @ UC Davis
Maier et al made it almost look easy on that drive. The little draw for Gilliam, with four receivers spread, a beautiful pair of blocks at the point of attack, beautiful.
  • Week 9: Weber State @ UC Davis
Back up, only dark for a couple of minutes. Sorry I panicked.
  • Week 9: Weber State @ UC Davis
And, Pluto is down. Got four minutes of action, almost better than nothing.
  • Week 9: Weber State @ UC Davis
At this pace, these guys better hydrate.
  • Week 9: Weber State @ UC Davis
At least once I drove Rolf from a soccer game to a football game, but I can't even remember now (maybe a home soccer game, road Hayward State? long time ago.)

Second on Casey Merrill getting some love and recognition. If for no other reason then I can tell some of my Casey stories. (most involved beer, and lifting heavy things.)
  • Select your 2nd favorite all time Aggie QB
Jim Speck - one of the older kids I looked up to throughout middle and high school. Best athlete I grew up with, severed his achilles in high school basketball (about ten feet from where I was sitting, I still remember that sound), never quite the same lightning foot speed, but still a great scrambling QB. Last game of his freshman year vs Boise State, epic performance, falling short at the end. First class person since 7th grade forward.

Bob Biggs - the Aggie hero when we were in high school. The season of the Miracle Game at Hayward (listened on KDVS), Boardwalk Bowl, wonderful memories. Got to know him when I matriculated, another first class guy over decades.

Mike Moroski - hated playing hoops against him, so quick for his size. Would just torch me over and over, with his sidekick/mouthpiece John Sharper talking smak on his behalf nonstop while Mo silently grinned that grin. Oh, great QB, excellent pitcher, another wonderful guy since the first day of practice his freshman year.

Like picking my favorite brother. Impossible. Great athletes, better men. Must be the water in Davis. Oh, Ken and the rest of those youngsters were pretty great too.
  • WEEK 8: AGGIES @ THUNDERBIRDS
Man, I love Bob Dunning and his writing style at the ol Enterprise so much. He was my first boss, I was a teenaged stringer writing up Little League and city recreation softball games a long long time ago. He was a great friend to my mom as well.

I didn't know until last week that SUU coach Demario Warren is a former Aggie. The injuries hurt, but would love to see fewer missed/broken tackles, and fewer penalties.
  • WEEK 8: AGGIES @ THUNDERBIRDS
Our punter is pretty good, kinda would like to see Hawk give him some more action. Interception for the D, they might survive this yet.
  • 2019 BATTLE FOR THE GOLDEN HORSESHOE
I can't believe I hadn't noticed the 'Club Fred' helmet sticker this year, in the CP game recap video above.
  • 2019 BATTLE FOR THE GOLDEN HORSESHOE
another cornerback in man coverage, no safety help (they are in run support), beat deep 1 on 1. Not too good.
  • 2019 BATTLE FOR THE GOLDEN HORSESHOE
During a commercial break, the mike was open, and one of the announcers bitched at the director about the camera cues (indication of which camera/monitor is live at a given moment). Not a polished telecast.
  • Week 6: UC Davis @ North Dakota
And a drop on the last offensive play. Thinking about getting two yards after the catch for the first down. Disappointment.
  • Week 6: UC Davis @ North Dakota
false start, bad snap, delay of game penalty. Not good.
