As for the number of tests we’re doing, if only we had increased testing in March rather than downplaying the virus and refusing to test as many people as possible. I can’t imagine the reason why testing didn’t increase sooner. If you’re going to blame the hospitals for artificially increasing the numbers (I don’t agree with this but we’ll go with it), then you need to acknowledge how many more cases we would have had Trump not held numbers down by not testing or how some states (Florida was one) weren’t reporting actual numbers because they didn’t want to look bad.

The numbers aren’t perfect. It’s almost impossible for them to be. But the bottom line is we’ve done a terrible job at containing this thing. Some of that is on Trump. But a lot of it isn’t. People refusing to wear masks for any number of dumb reasons or putting themselves in stupid situations unnecessarily. And it’s going to cost us in a number of ways.

I realize you think it's that because you're a racist Trump loving buffoon, but it actually, it matches the timing of lots of states opening things up. And that's not a red state thing either. California has seen numbers rise also.

If people would just sacrifice a couple weeks of their lives and do everything they can to stay super careful, we'd make significant progress. But we, as a society, have generally refused do that. Lots of people have, which has helped, but not as many as should be doing it. Just wear a damn mask for a few weeks. I get it. I don't like wearing a mask either. I'm young and healthy so I'm in the low risk category. If I get Covid, I'm almost certainly not going to die. I might not even need to go to a hospital. There's a decent chance I don't even suffer any symptoms at all. But you can be asymptomatic and still pass this thing on. But I still wear a mask when I go to a store because it's the right thing to do.

Barring an unrealistic solution like literally everyone staying in their home for two weeks, this thing isn't going away any time soon. But we can significantly limit the damage if we just stay vigilant. But it takes a vast majority of people buying in. And that's where we're failing. Because too many people care more are selfish and don't care enough and it's going to cause shutdowns to go on much longer than necessary.

Now, there is the caveat that we're testing more than before, but the cases certainly aren't going down. Bunch of other states are seeing similar bumps also.

The issue with looking at the overall data for the US is it looked like cases were going down because New York blew up so badly originally and really got stuff under control. So the overall daily new cases were going down but the non-NY cases were going up.

I might be wrong but I don't think it's actually Newsom's call. If it was Newsom's call, all California universities would be closed in the fall (or not closed, either way, it would be all or none). But right now it's only the state schools.

This issue for college sports is if the universities are closed and only doing online learning, how are you going to do athletics? You're going to open up some sort of housing for just the athletes? If so, is it dorms or apartments. What about practicing? You're going to need staff there besides just the coaches. How would that work? This goes beyond just California. I've seen other instances of schools saying if there's no classes, we're not doing sports in the fall.

It's almost as if there are outcomes other than:

A: Dead
and
B: Perfectly healthy

I don't know why we're even debating whether or not football should be played in the fall. The coronavirus has been completely under control since early March just like Trump said it would. Some would even call it a miracle that it disappeared!

It's possible that many more kids are infected but don't get sick enough to seek medical treatment. It's also possible that some infected children may develop no symptoms at all.

We're not testing everyone here. People are getting tested when they show symptoms and show symptoms for a while. If someone doesn't show symptoms or very mild symptoms, they're not going to get tested. Again, just because you have mild or no symptoms doesn't mean you can't pass this thing on to someone else.

Stop saying infection rate is low for young people you misinformation spreading goon. Yes, young people are less likely to get sick and/or die than older people. But that doesn't mean they can't get it and either not show symptoms at all or show very minor symptoms that would not cause them to get tested. And if you have it, even if you don't show serious symptoms, you can still pass it on to other people.

It's far more contagious than the flu and it takes longer for symptoms to show up after you've been infected. So if someone gets it and they go about their life normally, they could spend a week spreading this thing around before they did get sick and stayed home.

We haven't peaked yet. Not with a handful of states still not doing lockdowns or having just put them in place. Total deaths are still doubling every three days. Agreed that the number of total cases is a bad number to look at for multiple reasons.

There's no way things really open up until there's more widespread testing, both to see who actually has it as well as who has already had it and recovered. Symptoms aren't the same for everyone. Maybe you just got a small fever for a day or two and a bit of a cough. That could be the regular flu or it could be this. Once people know that they have or haven't had it, they can go about their normal lives.

This thing won't be fully gone until we have a vaccine, which is why figuring out who has or hasn't had this is the key. What's likely to happen is we get this thing largely under control now and then it springs back up in the fall once things open up again. That outbreak won't be nearly as bad as this one is, but lives will still be lost.

Two weeks on, over 100000 confirmed cases in the US and 1700 deaths (6 straight days with more deaths than the previous day). If you thought this week was bad, it's only going to get worse. We've only been doing the lockdowns for a week (and even then, not everywhere) and it seems to take about two weeks for that to really start to matter. Italy locked down on March 9 and daily new cases and deaths didn't start to level off until March 22/23. So places that did do a lockdown should start seeing results in a week. And even then, we've probably got another week of the numbers steadily going up (deaths are doubling every 2 to 3 days).

It's going to be a while before things start opening up again, let alone going back to normal.

There are over 2000 confirmed cases in the US and 48 deaths. Two weeks ago, there were just over 1000 cases in Italy and 29 deaths. As of today, there are over 17000 cases in Italy and over 1200 deaths. Oh, and their health care system is overwhelmed. This is going to get worse because we're not doing enough to stop it.

He's been saying we have it under control for over a month. Feb 26 he said we have 15 cases and within a couple days it will be down close to zero. Oops.
