  • Week 4: UC Davis @ Weber State
We are 2-2. We beat a terrible team and a mediocre team. We played pretty well against a FBS, and got destroyed against a team in our league. We are a long way from being at the top of this conference. I've said it for years, we need to make institutional changes (which I believe are slowly happening) and it's a long road. Hawk is a step in the right direction, but put him in Gould's shoes and I think we still have 4 losing seasons. Patience.
  • Post game discussion: UC Davis @ Portland St
I thought the win over San Diego was pretty unsatisfying. Beating a non-scholarship 1-AA, meh. However, PSU has been a tough opponent, and we've struggled on offense against them for years. Cautious optimism. I don't think we are built for as much read-option as we ran against San Diego in conference, but I like the fact we have shown so many different looks (spread, double tights, etc.). This team has a lot of talent, and now we have an offensive mind that doesn't think run-run-pass is a good strategy!
  • Coach Gould
I think its overly optimistic to think we will be winning, or even highly competitive, in any Pac-12 games anytime soon. Oregon wasn't embarrassing last time, but we haven't had the horses to play four quarters. I'm in the "I'll believe it when I see it camp." I think we will see a big improvement this year if we can put up some offense, and the schedule is most friendly we've had in a long time. If we don't win 4-5 games this year, I'll be disappointed. I think there are six winnable games, maybe seven, so I'm leaving some first year hiccups in my prediction.
  • Coach Gould
I don't see us doing any better against Pac-12 teams in the next couple of years outside some major recruiting. However, the last Stanford team was top 10 pre-season, so it might be a little better. Ron Gould is a good man, and I genuinely believe his statements. I'm optimistic for Hawk, and I believe the administration has turned a corner for the better. However, I'd rather see us playing San Jose State, Reno, or other mid-majors as our FBS games.
  • 2018 Recruiting List
Most recently Petit was solid pass rusher, but he was much more stiff than this kid.
  • 2018 Recruiting List
He predates me by a long time...lol. I didn't see him since he was on campus almost 20 years before me. Eaton will have other offers. Kraft just got Air Force. I'm hopeful we can keep them.
  • 2018 Recruiting List
He and Nick Eaton play together. Both will have FBS offers...I've been working on them! Kraft is a great route runner, super quick, but not blazing. Has incredible hands, and blocks like a big guy. Eaton would add an element I haven't seen at Davis, maybe ever, as he is a true outside pass rusher. He's really fast, big, and very dynamic. He will be more like 240 by the time he rolls onto a campus. Also plays slot receiver...yes at his size.

No idea. The speed at this level is totally different. Smarts can overcome arm-strength to some extent, but it depends on what offense we are running and what we are asking the QBs to do. If we are throwing wide-side comeback routes...probably not (as with most QBs at our level), but a West-Coast offense, I think he can compete for sure. He's a walk-on who has to sit out for a year. He will have his chance to prove himself during scout team, so we'll see. He's an amazing kid off the field, and I'm cheering for him.
  • Sping Football
I've seen Brock Johnson play. He has a strange delivery that he uses to make up for a slightly below average arm. The kid is a winner, has an amazing attitude, and is a true student of the game. it will be a full year before Brock Johnson is in the mix, but he could add some depth that we really haven't had in awhile.
  • Sping Football
The way Gould/Daft managed the offensive personnel was very aggravating, and I hope Hawk doesn't follow that lead. I've read some interesting critiques of the past staff, or at least its inferred from some of the comments made by Hawk's staff (i.e. the kids don't have the right technique), and if this is true we should see a dramatic increase in our existing team. Our recruiting has been solid the past 4 years, so if Hawk's staff is as good as they hold themselves out to be (criticizing a past staff is pretty taboo in football), then better will win now. I hope they do!
  • Sping Football
I hear Spencer is going to possibly change positions, and is a clear number 3. Dale has grabbed the reigns and looks like he's the guy. I hope they don't mess around with the starter, and let him take over before camp. Brock Johnson is a walk-on transfer. He has to sit out 2017. What offense were they running during the spring game?
  • WBB WNIT: UC Davis Aggies (25-7) @ Washington State Cougars (14-19)
Travel plans were awful. They looked tired. I know it was finals week, but they absolutely shouldl have been there on Tuesday night. Road warriors they were, but that was just asking too much. Great job ladies!
  • UC Davis Aggies vs NC Central Eagles @ Dayton, OH
I must admit the Aggie hoop teams far exceeded my expectations and predication. I know our Mens' RPI is one of the worst in the tourney, but we won when we had to, and had a great conference season. The women had a great regular season, and feel a few possessions short of the tourney. This is a start. Hopefully, baseball and football can follow the lead.
  • Cal Fires Dykes
Lol, no idea, but if they were waiting for Chip Kelly, I can see how that would be worthwhile considering his success at the college level, but I think their recruiting will be screwed. Dykes system is not the Oregon system, although its close, and QBs will be jumping ship (Dykes uses passers, Kelly uses runners). Blue wasn't slow, it was Hakwins who was "slow" in filling his staff. Blue was on top of it.
  • Cal Fires Dykes
No way Gould is hired at Cal. Just someone talking who knows nothing. Timing is terrible, if not irresponsible, by Cal. Can't see how this will not detrimentally effect their recruiting. I heard rumors of his termination two months ago.
  • Troy Taylor leaving EWU
I wanted Troy Taylor as our OC, but he is obviously bigger than our game right now. Why go from the Big Sky penthouse to the basement? Congrats to Troy...that's a hell of a jump in two years. I hope he has a ton of success.

Winning helps recruiting, fundraising, and attendance, but don't expect much more next year. I think we should have 2-3 more wins with a new offense, and anything more than that will be a massive success.
  • Assistants
Glad you are excited. I'm hopeful, but only cautiously optimistic. I'll get excited when we have a winning season...although the prospect of a new offense is a little exciting. I might start getting more excited if we see some changes in the admissions policies or any of the other changes I have suggested to Dr. Blue. Without significant changes, we will be in the bottom half of the conference.

Yeah, a new coach usually has his staff finalized very promptly (within a few days to a week after his formal hiring depending on the schools hiring policies), and we didn't name our OC for almost a month after Hawk's hiring. As a recruit, you want to know who is recruiting you, who is coaching you, the offense/defense they will run, and understand their commitment to you as a player. Every day matters in the recruiting game...almost a month to hire Plough seemed to waste time. A lame duck coach is not very persuasive. McCann was a good coach, and he did a lot with very little. Our passing game sucked, but it was not his fault and that's not why he's not coming back. Dr. Blue's hiring was not "prompt", it's what it takes to replace a head coach and get back into recruiting. Having a dead period (i.e. new coach search) essentially puts a freeze on recruiting, so it had to happen fast. Any "delay" may have no effect on recruiting anyway, but I was concerned it took so long to hire a young FCS OC who happens to be an alumni player and coach.

I'm sure they knew, or anticipated, that the guys recruiting them would be gone based on Gould's firing. I would bet teams recruiting against us used that as a factor for not choosing Davis. Frankly, it took a long time to put this staff together, and based on who Hawk hired, it shouldn't have (they were all his guys, really). I'd rather have had Hawk's guys doing the recruiting.
