It's not about him, it's about Hawkins having his guy. It's very unusual for coaches to remain after a new hire, and you will usually only see a few kept around for continuity. I heard all but three have been let go, and it looks like that was true.

This is old news. Who cares about what may or may not have happened with Cody years ago. I want results here. As I always said with Gould, give the man 3 years, if it's not getting better, then we have to look a different direction. If he had a problem this summer, this fall, or next year, we can talk about it all day.

I think we need to have the OC in place asap so we can recruit the right fits for his offense. Maybe Hawk will mandate what he wants run, so it won't matter, but I think it matters to recruits.

Depends on what you think is an honor I suppose. Never heard of the IFAF, or any national team for football. I'm not trying to downplay anything, but I'm saying it's not like we hired "the national team's" coach (i.e. Coach K). I'm sure Hawkins knows it wasn't worth mentioning...shoot, the USA has only played three times in 9 years. I know more than a few who participated in exhibitions of American football abroad...it's really who is willing to go play/coach a few games for a free trip.

As for Speckman, I heard from a pretty good source (a guy who coached against him in JUCO), that he is not going to be the OC. At this point, I'm wondering what's taking so long to find the OC. Are candidates saying no?

I've never heard of it. Honestly, I'm not sure how much of an honor it really is either. So, he's out of coaching 5 years, and that's the guy they pick...yeah, not sure it's really relevant on his resume. We need an OC in here asap...did I miss something...we hire one yet?

Until they take the first snap next year, I'm not going to worry about what they run. However, not having an OC named from the get go is a bit concerning for recruiting and planning. So far the Hawkins era is coming across a bit jenky. In any event, to be clear, this is still Division 1AA. I know they call it Division I, FCS, whatever, but we play very small time football at UCD right now. We are so far from FBS football (real Division I) it's ridiculous. We aren't even "big time" in FCS. Give Hawkins what he needs to bring our program to the forefront, build what we need, and let's bring get us to the "big time" at least in the Big Sky.

elements of the fly...fine. We already did that a ton last year, but a base fly offense, especially with our personnel remains a disaster in my opinion. Speckman is certainly a cool hire though...especially when he's not OC.

We stuffed Cal Poly until the last 3 mins when we gave up a 91 yard run. We lost to CP because our offense sucked, and scored 10 total points (with 7 coming in the last minute) when CP went prevent. We scored a defensive TD in that game as part of our 16 total points. Cal Poly never should have beat us, and we sucked.

The fly sweep (jet sweep) is run by everyone, but the fly offense is run by no one in big time football. I can't imagine Hawkins will go to it.

This is a youth football/high school offense, and that's why you don't see any of the top 40 teams in FBS running it. We will get killed if we run the Fly Offense. We play in a wide-open passing conference, and the run first teams were at the bottom of the conference this year. The Fly will put a tremendous amount of pressure on our defense to keep games low scoring. The Fly is not a high scoring offense, and if you get behind, the game is over unless you also have a passing attack (tough to be good at both). You need at least 3 great athletes and a stud OL to run it, and any defense that can play disciplined/assignment D will destroy us. Just like we used to kill SUU back in the Biggs days. I would be extremely disappointed if we run this offense...I'm not feeling optimistic at all.
  • MBB: Aggies @ Cal
Well, same as football, we just can't get the kids other people can...including Cal...because our GPA requirements are set on OUR campus. Cal will let anyone in who can pass the minimal GPA and testing requirements and has forever (Kidd barely passed the minimum 800 on the SAT in 1992). We seem over-matched in most games.
  • 6'5" Alabama QB w 2 yrs left available now
You beat me to it...no way. Let's see, I'm a QB on the number 1 team in the country, I can transfer to any D-1 without sitting out, but I'm going to some FCS in California that doesn't even have a study hall. Sorry, but there are better odds my wife is giving me that super-car I drooled over last weekend in SF for Christmas. Yeah, it's possible she might finance a car with monthly lease payments that equal our house payment, but sadly, not probable.

I hope he comes right in and gets us better.

No idea...I was referring to the new DC. I was hoping for somewhat experienced FCS or FBS guys for the coordinator positions based on the statements about higher salaries.
  • Assistants
That smells a little...favor for favor? Hope he's the best guy.
  • Hawkins' Contract & Assistants' Pay Level
I'm sure the losing has alienated donors, but our donations sucked before Gould even got here. The donors I know, including me, really like Gould as a person and he was a big reason I continued to participate in the fundraiser golf tourney and gave my money to football (I choose what sports get my money based on my perception of need). What alienates me the most is the fact I've donated to baseball for 20 years as well, and I can't see anything tangible for it. Still no locker room, covered batting cage, shade covers, or lights. UCD needs to do a better job in showing this is what you got (or are going to get) for your money. Liz Martin is doing a good job of that now, but where has that been the past 20 years? We have been so small time for so long. Blue is taking us in the right direction.

Lol, I love Reno games, but not all Reno fans.

Watched Fresneck play on ESPN in the early 2000's, and the commentator was saying it was out of control. Reno was pretty unreasonable a few years ago, including inappropriate remarks to our cheerleaders. I love McCann...energy galore.

Two assistants have ready been told they are back. Not going to reveal their names until I hear it from Hawkins. Not daft or Watts, obviously. congrats to our former DC, he was snatched up almost the day Hawk released him, and in his case his time at UCD didn't hurt him. Not sure it will go that way for daft, but I truly hope he gets a job asap. It will likely be a lot harder for the lower assistants. A lot of these guys are family men, and there is a lot more at risk for them than wins and losses. You are Aggies for life now...we will claim you for sure when you hit the big time.
  • Hawk: New Facility, Increase in Budget ...
Coach Gould is an awesome guy, was handicapped by poor leadership in the ICA, but he wasn't a great coach in his first three years. He wasn't great listening to his staff, and didn't make good in-game decisions. I agree our OC should have been changed before year 3, or at least change the offense. Our defense played at our conference level, and if you take out the second FBS game each year, our stats would be far stronger on D. In any event, Coach Gould came into a storm of crud...a terrible AD (Tumey, then his wife), and no money. Looks like we are in the right place with Dr. Blue, but time will tell. Gould will be just fine, but I hope the rest of his staff find homes as well.
  • The Hawk Era - Bringing Fans to Aggie Stadium
If the AggiePack is loud and wild, they can change the game by being on the visitor sideline. Think Reno...they were nuts and distracting. If the Aggie pack really loud, they can mess with the calls from the sideline. They need to own this! They had to move Fresno State back to their student side because it was so wild (they actually did some bad stuff). Take pride in being part of the game students!
