With a harder-than-it-shoulda-been win in San Louis Obispo on Saturday, the Aggies narrowly avoided being swept on the Central Coast. It doesn’t get any easier this week with conference-leading UCSD visiting UCCP on Thursday evening, followed by a Friday flight to play the Beach on Saturday in Long Beach. Davis managed a come-from-behind win over the Tritons in San Diego 3 weeks ago, and a similar effort will be needed the week, as the Aggies try to stay in contention for the Big West regular season title.

The 1st place Tritons put up 69 ppg, as do the Aggies, and and hold opponents to 59 ppg, 4 points better than UCD’s 63. Erin Condron and Sabrina Ma headline UCSD’s offense, scoring 15.7 and 12.1 ppg, respectively. Makayla Rose adds anoth 107 ppg. On the glass, Condron gets 8 boards a contest, supported by Rose and Ma’s 4 rebounds each.

Four Aggies average double digits: Ryann Bennett (15.4), Megan Norris and Nya Epps (both at 12.4), and Avery Sussex (11.3). Norris paces the Aggies in rebounding at 12.3 rpg, while Tegan Young and Nya Epps each add 4 boards a game. While doing a good job in several areas, the Aggie bench is only putting up 10 points a game, unable to pick up the slack if one of the Big Four experience an off night shooting the ball.

Men's game is a dumpster fire, but the women's game just entered 3OT!

This game was a freakin blast! Like others I eventually gave up on seeing if the men’s team made some insane comeback and watched the women’s and at the right dang time! Awesome stuff continues this season.

I also wanted to give you kudos for these consistent posts about each game. Makes it easy to read out and hype the family and friends for games.

29 rebounds for Norris. Holy crap.

Whew - that was some game! I wasn't sure fatigue wouldn't do us in but OMG the women just kept the effort up. Norris had a horrid shooting night - except for those 3s toward the end when they were needed. She did great vacuuming up the rebounds, though. And the John Havlicek award has to go to Baker. She came in, jump started things, made some key buckets, got hands in for steals, and eventually fouled out but a huge effort. Do you think they know who John Havlicek was?

Wish there were more people there.

I salute the solitary band member who stood for the national anthem.

    TY!

I didn’t make it last night. First day feeling normal after a bout with an intestinal bug. Thought it best to stay home. My wife said missing the game would probably mean a great win! Every little bit helps.

I hope the women have enough left in the tank to take down the Beach on the road.

Yep - the starters played much of the game, Norris all but a couple of minutes. There was a great moment between Norris and Joe during a time out. Norris came over and sat down, looking a bit gassed. Joe sat down beside her and they had this conversation. You could see it was coaching but it was just one-on-one while the rest of the team got Jen. Then Joe got up, Norris slid over and joined the rest of the team, and things moved on.

That was a unique moment in my watching of the team. Looked like good coaching to this oldster.

Thanks for that vignette. Those snapshots give great insight to the team culture. I think I've seen more of that individual moment thing this year than in past years, from Mia Gallo and Vickie Baugh as well as Terramoto and Klemin.

At least the Aggies made ESPN's NCAAW page in the highlights. No mention of Norris's big game on the boards. though.

I've gotten increasingly concerned as the season's progressed about the effect of the big minutes all the starers are playing. Tired legs really affect shooting, which is why I think Ryann and Avery, particularly, have struggled with consistency since we've gotten into the middle portion of conference play. Megan, in addition to the minutes, has been wearing theraputic tape one one or both hamstrings all season - and more recently a leg sleeve. So her legs have never been 100%. It's amazing that she's having the season she is.

Nya's grown into a scoring role this year and has the advantage of having played in the upper 20 minutes for the previous 2 seasons. Her shooting has always been a little streaky, and that hasn't changed. I'm wondering if Vic will get more time on the court after last night. Tegan Young has improved her stats from her time at Manhattan, in what she's admitted is a faster-paced league that she's still adjusting to. But she hasn't impacted games the way Vic has.

Not that Gross has many options for minutes off the bench: due injuries and inexperience, she's got a short 2nd unit to work with. I don't want to say "...and weak 2nd unit" as Lentfer, Ersdala, and Davis are all freshmen, and Tsami might as well be. There's only so much most freshmen can contribute; they've all had moments, particularly Lentfer and Ersdala. The upside is that at least Lentfer and Ersdala should be more prepared for next year. Tagging onto that, 2026 recruit Anna Bassett has beeb on campus since the start of Winter quarter, so she's also getting a head start on next season, which is all to the good.

It won't be the first year that the Aggie have relied on a 6-player rotation, certainly. But yeah, it puts a big burden on the starters.

Interestingly, SD's starters played the bulk of that team's minutes, as well.

UCSD actually has three players - Ma, Condren & Maxie - among the top 8 in the Big West in minutes per game.

    Yup, saw that!

UCSD actually have five of the top ten in minutes/game, if you look at only in-conference stats (there's a button at the top left of the page to switch back and forth)!
