Bakersfield, in contrast to CSUN, has played a fairly strong schedule, which partly explains their losing record. They played tough road games against Cal, Ole Miss, Florida State, UCSB and CSUN accounting for nearly half their losses. The rest of the explaining is due to the loss of veteran head Coach Rod Barnes, who has retired and the team is in the hands of interim coach, Mike Scott. Barnes is a tough act to follow having won 210 games at CSUB and 396 in his career. Scott, will have help, though, from Assistant Coach Brandon Barnes, son of Rod. It’s hard to say how well they will do this Saturday, but the Aggies are favored.

To date in the Big West, Cal State Bakersfield is 0-3 but all losses have come against the better schools: CSUN, UCSB and UCI. They also struggle on the road as they have a 1-6 record, their only road win was against Fresno State, which is currently 6-6. At home they are much better but their only significant victory was a 64-63 squeaker over Idaho. On the other hand, they came close to beating UCI at Icardo Center, 77-81.

The Roadrunners return only two regulars, one of whom is the starting point guard and leading scorer, Dailin Smith (15.4 ppg). The other is Tom Mark, a 6’7” forward who has started a few games so far but often is displaced by 6/ 11” center Pierre Geneste, Jr. who along with forward Ronald Jessamy leads the team in rebounds. Geneste’s 6.2 rebounds per game is impressive in that he only plays about 18 minutes per game. Jessamy is also impressive with his 37 blocked shots this season (UCD’s Niko Rocak has 21) and he scored 25 points against the Anteaters on Thursday. Rounding out the most common starting five are transfer guards C. J. Hardy and A. J. George. Hardy scores an average of 14.6 ppg. Guard Jaden Alexander, an occasional starter and a junior who has spent all of his years at Bakersfield, and freshman Mike Price log a lot of floor minutes as well. As a team, CSUB struggles from trey territory hitting only 28%. They are also not good at keeping opponents off the board, allowing 37.9 rpg.(note that UCD averages 31.3 rpg. allowed). An even more important advantage for the Aggies is that the Roadrunners only make 10.6 assists per game while Davis averages 16. Given Bakersfield’s 1-6 road record vs. UCD’s 7-1 home record this should be a second Big West win for the Aggies.

UC Davis rates a 10.5 spread over CSUB. I'm a little skeptical of that spread. If I were a betting person, I would take the Roadrunners to lose by a single digit number. Meanwhile, watch out for Hawai`i. They beat Riverside 88-45 at UCR.

I saw the odds and thought the same thing. They always play us tough; however, I think a lot of that was the personality of coach Barnes.

Any info on Bakersfield’s new interim coach? I totally forgot that Coach Barnes is out until @DrMike mentioned him just now.

I've noticed that Rocak wins a lot of the opening tips, not because he jumps high, but he gets up very quickly. I think that is also a factor in the way he can block shots. Plus he has uncanny timing.

Stated as a Buck Owens fan, CSUB really missed out by not using the nickname the Bakersfield Sound instead of Roadrunners

    We should be killing Bakersfield…

Fouls are really adding up for Bakersfield. Two players with three fouls and two with two.

40-39 Bake at the half. Stats are pretty even across the board.

This is why I thought the 10.5 spread was too big. The Roadrunners are better than their record or preseason expectations. On the other hand, madcity is right. CSUB lacks depth, so the number of fouls hurts them more than the Aggies whose fouls afre more distributed due to their depth.

Rough picking up a 4th foul 35 seconds into the half

The refs are calling it way too close on both ends. This favors Bakersfield so far, in the sense that they are shooting foul shots better than usual while the Aggies are shooting it worse than usual.

Ags down by 6 with less than 2 minutes to go. I sure didn't expect this. #25 and #10 are killing us.

So Jadan Alexander who has been averaging about 6 points a game and does not usually start, gets into the zone and goes off for 35. An unpredictable event, but the coach must have sensed something. Ags didn't help themselves in the second half as they had twice as many turnovers as the Runners and I already noted the free throw shooting discrepancy. All the other stats were about equal. Quiet dayu for the fans. Guess everyone is gearing up for the 49ers.

I was surprised they didn’t go at #25 more when he had three fouls

Bake was the more physical team today and they just kept the Ags off balance for most of the game. Then, of course, Jadan Alexander just lit us up by exceeding his average by a whopping 29 points!

We got off to a pretty good start and got up by 9 early on before Les began substituting 2-3 players in and out from the bench every 2 or 3 minutes and Bake got back into the game as the Ags turned the ball over. I felt like the 5 Aggie players on the floor never got a chance to settle into a rhythm with such frequent, wholesale substituting and Bake took advantage of it. I'm not sure what Les' strategy was substituting like that.

Seems like he's been doing that in a lot of games this year. Maybe he should go to platoons like Bob Hamilton once did.

If Mountain West basketball is a step up from Big West we have a big problem. Can't even get it done here. If we can't sell recruits on coming to Davis over Bakersfield, then we should just pack it up.
