Seattle is a tough team to figure. They’ve beaten some good teams, such as Stanford and Idaho State. On the other hand, they are 0-2 against the Big West, losing to Cal Poly (by only 2) in Seattle and losing to UCSB (by only 3) in the championship game of the Resort World Classic tournament. This will only be their second true away game, but the other one was their defeat of the Cardinal in Palo Alto. The head coach is Chris Victor who in his 5th year there has been a real victor with 3 consecutive 20+ win seasons prior to last year, when the team finished 14-18. He has some key players returning from what was then a young squad so they should be much improved and in fact have already won over half as many games as they won all last season. Seattle is favored by 3.5.

The Red Hawks best player is guard Brayden Maldonado who leads the team in scoring (17.7 ppg) but also rebounds, dishes assists and plays solid defense. Plus, he is shooting free throws at 97%. Another key player is Will Heimbrodt out of San Anselmo. He’s a 6’ 7” forward who scores at the rate of 14.9 ppg and pulls down 41 rpg. On defense, he’s a rim protector, averaging 2.8 bpg. The rest of the front court consists of Gonzaga transfer Junseok Yeo, a 6’8” forward (12.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg) and center Austin Maurer whose 7’ frame gives the Hawks an average size of 6’9” when he gets in the game. He leads the team in rebounds with 4. 3 per game. The point guard is Maleek Arington. The fifth starter is Houran Dan a 6’ 10” center from China, who gets a lot less playing time than many of the bench players. Some of the backups have good stats that were inflated due to the amount of playing time they got in a 115-60 route of Warner Pacific on Saturday. Still there are three players who have gotten a significant amount of playing time this year, guards Jojo Murphy, Miles Amos and John Christophilis. Interesting that they have three players from Asia: Dan, Seo (South Korea) and Yuto Kawashima from Japan.

Oddsmakers have us an underdogs from 2.5 to 4.5 points. The one i read that had us at 4.5 underdog had their best bet as take Seattle and give the points -> they were stressing our last game as a strong reason for that.

We'll be there tonight; not expecting a big crowd.

I'll miss tonight's game but will try and catch the replay...Seattle has been one of those programs through the years that we always seem to struggle with.

Unfortunately, we’re going up against the 68 Ventures Bowl tonight and that will put a dent in attendance!

I read this as 6-7 Dentures Bowl.
Missed opportunity by whoever put that bowl together.....

my 92-year old mom was down Sunday for an early Christmas with grandkids and asked ‘what does this 6-7 thing mean?’

    ‘It doesn’t mean anything, gramma’

‘Yes, but, what does it mean?’

This went on for about 10 minutes.

6-7 means that the younger generations can annoy the older ones with meaningless memes.

This is starting to look like the Oregon game, Ags down 15-2 already. Small crowd, so not much of a home court advantage for us.

Amazing shot by Cooper. Ags 3 point shooting (6 of 11) has them back in this one, 38-33.

A really nice comeback by the Aggies. They went from being stone cold, missing 8 in a row, to red hot shooting 50% with 53^ from 3 point land. Sandy Simpson is doing a much better job of the color IMHO. His analysis is instructive now.

A very exciting game but a heartbreaking one point loss in the last 2.2 seconds on a questionable foul call. No stats available on ESPN for the last 8 minutes of the game. The Aggies played very well and did not deserve to lose like that. It should have been decided in OT.

I was at the game. Really nice effort by the Ags to come back and take this game to the final seconds against a very good team that had a significant size advantage. Seattle is 9-2 now including a win over Stanford.

The Ags only had 5 fouls with the score tied in the final 8 seconds so they one to give without Seattle going to the line except for a shooting foul. I couldn't believe that the ref called that last foul a shooting foul. It looked like the Seattle player wasn't anywhere close to shooting when the foul was called. What did it look like on TV?

Coach Simpson made the point about fouling early even as Seattle was inbounding the ball. I am sure Coach Les had made the same point and the players just failed to execute. As for the call, I thought it was bogus even on replay, but it would not have happened before the NCAA added the "continuation" rule for shooting fouls. It did look like Heimbrodt was making an upward motion with his arms, so it was a judgment call, but far from being clear cut. The ref didn't hesitate a second i making it, though. It was a real shame to lose given the great games by Chappell, who was 7 for 10 from trey range, and Fagbemi, who had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Niko looked like he was struggling to me. They were working on one of his legs before the game started. Hit the FTs and we would have iced this one. Credit to the fellas for coming back after Seattle came out shooting lights out.

we had a pretty good angle on the play (and could see the replays on radio broadcasts screens) and that was bad, especially given the circumstances. On radio Les said maybe they could have fouled earlier to take away any chance of a call like that but you don’t want to give them too much time to set up. Radio guys were stunned. BLUEGoldAg was beside himself!

As AgAlum pointed out, make FTs and we win. And second chance points killed us, especially after a really good defensive effort.

    Still am!

The Seattle player did not appear to be in the act of shooting, not even close and, generally speaking, when the game is tied in the final seconds, refs rarely call a foul like that unless it is absolutely obvious that the player was fouled hard in the act of shooting. It wasn't "obvious" at all and, 99 out of a 100 times, the refs allow some contact in the final seconds because they don't want to decide the game with "the wrong call." The teams can go on and fight it out in OT. The ref who made that call decided the game.

    From Bob Dunning's Substack column:

“The game started at 6 and we didn’t show up until about 6:15,” said Aggie head coach Jim Les afterward.

“I appreciated our fight to get back in the game and we did a lot of good things. When we got down 15-2 we could have mailed it in, but our guys fought back.”

Sevilla hit nothing but net on all three attempts to tie things at 78, but Heimbrodt was fouled with 2.2 left and made the second of two free throws.

The Aggies had committed only five fouls in the half up until that point, meaning a non-shooting foul would simply result in Seattle having an inbounds play.

However, Heimbrodt was ruled to have been in the act of shooting and was awarded two free throws.

“When you look at the video, he was not attempting a shot,” said Les, and most of the crowd agreed with that assessment.
