I’m not sure why we’re playing a conference game this early in the season, but the Ags are going to Hawai`i where they seldom win. I think UC Davis is 2-11 in Stan Sheriff Center. Hawai`i coach Eran Ganot, after suffering a losing season and fans calling for his head, restocked his roster with a lot of talent. None of them more imposing that 7 foot center Isaac I(Big Fish) Johnson from Utah State U. He leads the team in both scoring (16.8 ppg) and rebounds (7.9 rpg) shooting over 50% from the field. He is also shooting an incredible 94% from the free throw line, having made 43 consecutive foul shots going into this week. Two other key transfers are guards Hunter Erickson (Utah) and Dre Bullock (South Dakota). They also have three good returning players including Harry Rouhliadeff, Gytis Nemeiksa and Aaron Hunkin Clayton. Those guys accounted for 28 points and 16 rebounds in last year’s 78-70 win over UCD in Hawai`i. Continuing the Utah pipeline is Isaac Finalson a 6’ 8” forward from Utah Tech. The Rainbow Warriors can go nine deep to include forward Yacine Toumi and guard Isaiah Kerr.

Hawai`i has started the season strong with its two losses going to Power 5 schools in Oregon and Arizona State. On the other hand, all their wins have come over mediocre opponents, only one of which has a winning record, Div. 2 Hawai`i Pacific. They score an average of 80.7 ppg. shooting 67% from inside the arc. Unlike recent Rainbow teams, this group knows how to run the fast break. They also get a lot of easy buckets via the guards’ ability to get the ball inside. If there’s a weakness it’s the poor three point shooting (28.6%). As a team they know how to sweep the glass collecting an average of 41.3 rpg, an 11 rebound advantage over their opponents, given that they can field a front line averaging 6’ 10”. Their defense is not shabby either allowing 66.7 ppg.

Hope the Ags won’t be rusty after a layoff of over a week.

the past two seasons, they’ve played the first week of conference early yo avoid starting during the holiday break - the larger conference, along with byes and accommodations for travel to Hawaii, has extended the schedule so that there has to be a week before the new year.

Remember we played UCSB as the second half of a doubleheader’ last year with football playoff. Fortunately, we only have one such game and it’s on the road.

Hawai'i looks very good. I'm hoping we make a good game out of it and not give up. I know Oregon is not as good as they once were, but Hawai'i only lost by one point...

Toke, are you going to the game?

I have gone to every one since the Aggies started playing here, but now I'm having problems getting there and I never enjoyed being the only one cheering for UC Davis, so this time I'll be content to watch it on local television. I assume that it will be same broadcast as on ESPN+ with Kanoa Leahey doing the play-by-play and Artie Wilson doing the color. Both are very good, biased, of course, but fair.

Great game preview, Toke! Very tough game for the Aggies and the Hawaii fans are as rowdy as they come making it a tough environment too!

Oddsmakers aren’t too optimistic for an Aggie upset - 10 1/2 point underdogs. Tough place for anyone to get a victory.

Some of the BWC games have interesting odds. Some are expected like irvine -11.5 over Riverside, and SB 11.5 over LB, both favorites at home. Home team CSUN -4.5 over Bako seems low, but home team Fullerton by 0.5 over Poly is a head scratcher.

Watch out for #14 tonight, Harry Rouhliadeff. He's been on a roll lately on offense. I'll be pleasantly surprised if the Ags win (and have mixed feelings about not being there). The fans do not like UCD as many of you have seen. Since it is a weeknight, though, and in the middle of Christmas shopping season the crowd might not be as big as it has been. It strikes me that with both teams heading to the Mountain West, this could be the start of a long term rivarly. Hawaii has no natural rival, the extension of their Big West competition makes this a natural rivarly for the foreseeable future.

I think a rivalry with Hawaii has been growing over the past few years. The games at Hawaii have often been hard fought and chippy with the crowd really getting into it. The games in Davis have been intense also.

Ags are off to a rough start down 15-5. Hawaii is shooting lights out from 3.

Hawai`i opens by uncharacteristically showing a red hot hand from 3. I'd predict that this won; keep up, but the Ags are not only shooting poorly but turning the ball over. This bodes very ill.

I swear we haven’t had a decent shot in the past 5 minutes. Down 22-17 at the 8.

Les seems more agitated than I can remember on the sideline

24-24 Hawaii with 3:38 to go in the half. Very physical game and definitely not pretty!

Ags still turning the ball over and shooting poorly. Sevilla has only one attempt. At least the defense has gotten better.

Teams have really shut Sevilla down lately and, when he does get a shot, he's been missing a lot.

At least UC Davis has held Hawai`i's big men, Johnson and Rouhliadeff, in check. They've combined for only 2 points. Of course, Eran Ganot has taken them out for long stretches of time. Can't score from the bench.

Uncharacteristic rust. We are better than we are playing. Would love to sneak a W out. Don’t think we are 11 point dogs though…

One of those nights it’s just not going our way. Has to be 5 or so lay ups that have just rolled out and our bigs are all in foul trouble.

Rocak gets whistled for his 4th foul when he had position with his arms straight up and the offensive player jumps into him on the shot. I hate those calls on the big men when the offensive players initiate the contact.

Foul trouble is really hurting us. New lineups and not a lot of help down low.

Even the Hawaii`i broadcasters questioned a couple of those fouls on Rocak. The refs are calling it too close.

Yes, Hawai`i in the second half has gone to their inside game which was something I noted in the preview post. I was surprised they didn't do that more in the first half.
