Our long time rivals come to Davis after opening with two Division 2 wins over Dominican (103-79) and Jessup, but their home loss to UC Santa Barbara was no surprise. The Hornets are coming off a 2024-25 season that saw them win only seven games and 3-15 in the Big Sky Conference. Given that record, Cal State Sacramento totally cleaned house with a new coach, Mike Bibby, and a totally new roster. A key transfer is Jeremiah (“The Bear”) Cherry a huge (6’ 11”, 250 lbs.) from UNLV where he averaged 9.9 ppg (61.7% FG%) and 5.3 rpg. He’s listed as a forward but the numbers suggest he’s a center. He does not shoot the trey and had 50 blocks for the Running Rebels. In keeping with what seems to be a trend, the Hornets have Shaqir O’Neal, who is Shaquille O’Neal’s son and no surprise as Shaq is the new Sac State general manager. Based on what I saw, O’Neal’s status as a starter is questionable. Another important transfer from USC is Brandon Gardner (6’ 8”, 215 lbs.), but his playing time for the Trojans was minimal as he was a medical redshirt. As a once potential NBA prospect, his impact could be huge, but so far he has been playing behind O’Neal. Yet another potential star is guard Prophet Johnson who is teaming with Mikey Williams as coach Bibby seems to have a lot of quality depth in his backcourt with Jahni Summers and Jayden Teat. Johnson had an outstanding game against UCSB (17 pts. 11 rebounds and 6 assists).

Unlike their first two games Sac State was challenged on Tuesday against a good UCSB team. It’s clear that the Hornets have a great deal of athleticism, but as a whole they are still figuring out how to play as a team. Confusion on defense led to some easy scores for the Gauchos. Of course, Santa Barabara’s Coach Joe Pasternak has his team fully ready. The first half was fairly even ending with UCSB having a two-point lead although the Gauchos lead by as much as 13. Both teams shot over 50% from 3. The half time box score reflected this and things changed very little in the second half. Again Santa Barbara built double digit leads with Sac State making a comeback to close it to 92-87.

The Ags will need to bring their A game on Friday if they hope to win.

I watched the UCSB @ Sac game and the Hornets are going to be tough opponent for us. Mikey Williams dropped 30 on the Gauchos and Jeremiah Cherry is a beast in the post. I'm hoping that our defense is better than the Gauchos so we can slow the Hornets down a bit and make it more difficult to for them to score. We were only 7 of 33 from outside the arc in our loss at Portland and, with the size and physicality of the Hornets' interior, we'll have to shoot a whole lot better than that from 3 because it's going to be tough going in the paint.

Will we see Shaq in the house Friday night?

I didn't see him at the UCSB game, but then I wasn't looking for him. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Davis, though.

I would say there is almost no way he’ll be in Davis.

Yeah, you're right. I forgot that he does those NBA commentaries for TNT.

Anyone heard if Nils is gonna be back for this one? Could use his scoring.

I haven't heard anything but, you're right, we need him in the lineup.

and Daugherty. We need as many scoring options as possible.

We’ll be there with 3 grandsons so probably won’t be sitting still for much of the game. We’re listed as 4 1/2 favorites

This will all come down to whether or not SAC's talent/athleticism can result in more made buckets than they give up with their terrible, terrible defense. I'll be tuned in!

ESPN gives the Ags a 79.2% chance of winning. Does anyone know why Nils was not playing against Portland?

Cant make the game in person, curious what the crowd looks like! Tickets online say low availability

With Shaq sightings, please. (Orr, too.) Would be one of the biggest men to enter the Pavilon.

FTR, Ham had an assistant who was friends w James Donaldson, 7'2", 275 (or more). Ham said when JD stepped into the doorway, there was no room for sunlight to get through.

Aggies settling for too many 3s and not making them. Started doing well on the boards but Hornets have taken over. Coach Les has them in a matchup zone at the 9:22 mark. We'll see how effective it is.

Watching on tv, but the crowd turnout looks good. But nothing will beat the game against UCSD last year haha

The defensive shift worked. Sac State had 24 in the first 10+ minutes, then 12 in the last part of the half. Of course, it helped that the Bear was sitting that whole time.

Nothing like a Friday night game of the Causeway Classic to get the students out. The box score gives Rocak only one block, but I counted 3.

My eyes might deceive me, but this team looks a lot faster driving into the paint than in prior years
