Aggies go for their 5th straight win down in Malibu against the Waves. Pepperdine seems to have bounced back after losing 5 in a row earlier this season, including lopsided losses to UCI and UCSD. Note that with their loss to Long Beach, they are 0-4 against the Big West. Not sure why ESPN gives us only a 38.2% chance of winning.

Their top scorer at 18.9 ppg is 6’ 8” forward Stefan Todorovic, who played at USF last year. They get solid point guard play from Pacific transfer Moe Odum (11.8 ppg, 7.3 apg). New coach Ed Schilling has almost no one from last year’s squad after Lorenzo Romar was fired after a 13-20 season. Last year, Romar brought the Waves to Davis to suffer a close loss to the Aggies 79-78, in which Eli Pepper and TY Johnson combined for 52 points. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

that game last year was a classic. Down 19 late second half, stormed back with defense and great shooting. TY won it at the buzzer.

    Let’s hope for a similar result….just a bit easier!

This is a funny one. Seems like we’re listed as 1.5 point favorites, but most of the gambling sites that have predictions pick Pepperdine. Mostly due to their scoring ability and the fact that teams are shooting 45% against us.

I wouldn't have thought that our opponents were shooting 45% against us since the Aggies are such a defensive minded team.

From The Big West Banter by Gauchodan:

Pepperdine picked a bad year to load up on Big West schools. The Aggies (7-4) are the fifth Big West squad to meet the Waves (5-7), who are 0-4 vs. the conference this season. Stefan Todorovic had 32 points in a losing cause to Long Beach State the other night, raising his season scoring average to 20.0. Todorovic shoots .403 from the 3-point line and has 65 free throw attempts, making 87.7% of them. This is the last D1 non-conference game for Davis, which has won 4 straight contests.

looking at out stats, it’s close to 43% about the same as ours. That 43% is skewed by Oregon State shooting 60% against us. There’s plenty of games where we’re holding teams below 40%. That’s part of the reason I take these early season predictions with a grain of salt.

Ags off to a rough start, especially Leo who has 3 turnovers and a foul in the first four minutes.

They look out of synch and are letting Pepperdine get down court way too fast.

I watched the Long Beach - Pepperdine game. We’re not matching up well with LB’s effort.

Pepperdine’s size/length is causing us all sorts of problems on both ends. We’re like 3-12 from the floor, they are about 75%

Ags should have gone to a zone and not a matchup zone. Waves are getting a lot of mismatches. Their height advantage also shows on their defense. Pepperdine players on full scholarship are saving $77,000 in tuition! No wonder they're playing well.

Feels like the Oregon St game. They get great matchups underneath on our smaller guys and their big guys are active defensively

Pepperdine’s roster is the perfect counter to the aggies. 2 or 3 guys that can make their own shot and hit it while contested. Then the rest is massive size.

    Desperately missing Borra today…

Hoping we get to see that kid with the cool hair.

Ags have had a tendency to start slow then rally and Pepperdine will likely cool off on offense, but being down 43-19 will require a historical comeback by UC Davis. I hope Coach Les can figure something out, but I think this is going to down as an L.

Brutal half for the Aggies. We shot 27% and had 9 TO's compared to the Waves 50% and 3 TO's. Our defense has to be locked in a disruptive in order for us to compete because we are not a gifted offensive team. So when teams can create size mismatches and exploit our defense, we're in trouble because our offense is generally very inconsistent

Rocak is the leading scorer with 5 points on 2 for 3 shooting. Meanwhile, TY is 1 of 7 and Sevilla is 2 of 7.

to add to the problems, when we do force a missed shit they get the rebound!

Hard to have TY, Leo snd Sevilla out there at the same time….they even take advantage when only two are there

65-33 and I'm tempted to just stop watching. Ags just had one of those days when the shots just weren't falling and the other team was having what might have been their best game this season, given that the Waves were 0-4 against the Big West before today.

Ags fall by 39 points 85-46. I can't remember when we lost a game this bad to team that isn't all that good and was 0-4 against Big West teams before this rout. I don't think this is the kind of game where you just shrug your shoulders and say, "Well, there's gonna be games like this." We've had two ugly games like this already this year. It doesn't get much uglier than this...

Les did show up for the post game and he was just pretty matter of fact in his comments. First he said, "Well, that was a lump of coal in our Christmas stocking" and then essentially went on to say that he was disappointed in the leadership of the team and that we didn't come out and play with energy and focus. He said if the players don't come back after the Christmas break with focus and effort, then the game will continue to humble them with more outcomes like this.

Well, the sad truth is that most teams have games like this. Note the Warriors recent loss to Memphis by 51 in which Steph Curry was 0-7 from the field. This is not to say that the team can just shrug it off. Coach Les' comments already indicate that he is going to give his guys the old chewing out over their sloppiness and lackadaisical play what with Big West play to arrive shortly. I think the Ags will be ready.

we did look shellshocked in the first four minutes and never recovered. We lost by 33 to Oregon State - another big team who shot lights out ( at least early today).

The stats are pretty alarming, Mike. We shot 28% (14-50) overall and 6.7%
(1-15) from 3 to go along with 18 TO's and getting out rebounded 44-30. That's a sad stat sheet especially when you consider that Pepperdine has been struggling and had already lost to 4 BW teams. Irvine and San Diego both beat them by 18 and we lost by 39...yikes!

favorite stat of the day : 1-15 from 3, and the guy that made it is Rocek!

Just a comment about my earlier point: I see that Steph Curry went off for 31 points on 10 for 21 shooting after his dismal performance against the Grizzlies. It never ceases to amaze me how anyone can be so cold in one game then so hot in another, even though I've been there and done exactly that many times. Wish I had found the magic formula to stay hot, as I'm sure most ballplayers do.
