I guess this kinda surprises me. I didn’t think of our corners as a real strength this year but, honestly, I don’t follow that side of the ball too closely.
New CB coach moved players around, Verner and McWilliams starting late season games, Bains consistently started at Nickel.
Cotton was a reserve last half of season but played quite a bit
Last years starter Alexander seldom played until end of season.
We had fantastic corners. Think about it like this. We had literally no pressure on opposing QBs all season. Outside of Montana State and South Dakota. Think about how many plays we stopped. Tight coverage, balls swatted or picked.
The more time a QB has, advantage WR.
We are lucky we had the corners we did otherwise this season would look way different.
I wasn’t saying anything bad about the corners - just didn’t hear much about Cotton, so a move to P4 was a surprise. Agree with you about the stress on corners this year.
Our defense had 7 all conference players, and none of them were the cornerback that transfered to a P4 team, or the two guys who played ahead of him,.
Did our defense underperform our talent?
Two best outside rushers in the last ten years were Mason Moe on Hawk’s best team and Cam Trimble a couple years later. Bryce Rogers was a good interior pass rusher. It has probably been 20 years since there was a traditional edge that could consistently get pressure.
I remember guys like John Faletoese from the interior, James Amos on the edge, even Nolan de Graaff, who was a tremendous athlete and switched from tight end his senior year I think, way back in the late transition days.
