The Hornets are off to a very poor start with only one win against a division 1 opponent and with losses to the likes of Mercyhurst and Omaha. Gone are Duncan Powell and Brandon Betson who combined for 35 in their 69-63 defeat of the Aggies last year. This year their main man seems to be Jacob Holt, a 6’ 10” senior forward who is averaging 15.9 ppg. to lead the team, plus pulling down 6.3 rpg which also leads the team. He doesn’t get much help from the rest of the team, as reflected in their record. Their record might also reflect the fact that they have an interim head coach, Michael Czepil, for whom this is his first head coaching job. If the Ags continue to play as well as in their past two games, they should win this one. As usual, the game will be on ESPN+.
Playing in the 70 year old Hornets Nest, which has a capacity of 1012, has got to be difficult and uninspiring for the visiting teams. It has to be one of the worst D1 facilities in all of D1 college basketball if not the worst. Most high schools gyms are just as good or better.
Thanks for the subtle correction. I must have gone to that gym a half dozen times, but one memorable year, Aggie fans packed it, out-numbering Sac State fans by at least 3:1. One cheerleader led a rousing "Welcome to an Aggie home game" yell.
just starting to pay attention to basketball this year. Can someone give me a quick injury update on our roster? I have to guess that Bora is hurt (again).
Both Francesco Borra and Jac Mani have been out all season and it does not appear that either will return. Other than that, no serious injuries. The team hit abad stretch for three games in which they looked sloppy and shot poorly, but they have been doing well of late, having won two Big West games at home against tough opponents.
Marsalis Roberson, who transferred from Cal, is still listed on the roster but he didn't play last year due to a pre-season injury and has not suited up this year either. I'm not sure what his eligibility status is point.
Ugh! Holt is as good as advertised, but the Ags are looking like the long break has made them rusty. Only problem with that is that the Hornets also had a long break.
Looking like a game of runs: 11-8-8-9 so far. I like Sac State's TV guy Steve McElroy. He's both glib and aka mai. He must be familiar to you long term followers of Aggie sports on the radio.
TY’s tech was bad especially after we lost the ball off missed free throw. 12 point lead down to 8. Less than 3 to go. Who is gonna score for us? One or two more buckets should do it
It shouldn't have been this close but for the sluggish start. It was weird the way that Holt came out looking like a real force then tailed off pretty badly. Ags biggest problem was going 4 of 15 from 3.
he had a ‘class a’ technical with about 4 minutes to go. Looked like he gave the Sac player a little kick after the Sac guy lightly grabbed his leg wrestling for the ball. Gave the hornets four points turning 12 point lead to 8. Plus that counts as a team foul which could have had an impact in what had become a close game.
I thought Leo was the key in the first half comeback. He took charge on both ends. TY hit a few nice shots during that run. Tamba was huge in the second half.
Reason key was stopping Holt. He had 14 points in first 5 minutes, 3 the rest of the way, and he had big turnovers down the stretch. Defense really flustered him.
Next is rematch with Idaho in that might be an empty Pavillion.
Note that both Tamba and DeBruhl are both averaging in double figures now, plus Sevilla is scoring at a 9.2 clip. We were looking for who would provide offensive support for TY and this looks like decent support. No one was going to do what Eli did last year.
