Thankfully the baseball season is less than 2 months away, and that can't help but be interesting, maybe not as interesting as sub .500 basketball, but interesting

The 2024 non-conference schedule doesn't have any UCLA's on it but it has perhaps a wider variety of decent opponents. I'm only going to mention the teams they are playing at least 3 times.

SEATTLE UCD won 2 of 3 from the Redhawks on the road in 2023. For being a so-so program Seattle gets some excellent pitching recruits, often with interesting names like Tarik Skubal and Janson Junk. Those are even good baseball surnames.

BRIGHAM YOUNG BYU had a losing record in 2023. The Aggies last hosted BYU (losing 2 of 3) in 2010 according to the UCD athletics website. BYU was in the Mountain West at the time. They have changed conferences at least twice since then.

at Santa Clara The Broncos won the WCC and went to the NCAA tournament in 2023 but they split their two games with the Aggies. so who really knows what to think ? The West Coast Conference doesn't seem to be one of the stronger baseball conferences. Maybe it has something to do with the difficulties small private schools have with finding enough top-quality recruits who want to be massively in debt after graduating or have super-wealthy parents.

at CAL BAPTIST The Lancers also had a losing record in 2023. However, Cal Baptist swept the series from the Aggies in 2021 at Dobbins Stadium.

at Abilene Christian According to the schedules on the UCD athletics website these two teams have not played each other since 2003 at the Division II CWS at Kennesw State. The Aggies won that game. Abilene Christian was 35-24 according to their website. Then again they play in the WAC so...

Sacramento State Speaking of the WAC, the only reason the hornets are being mentioned is there are 3 games scheduled-all of them of the mid-week variety. Sac State went 30-26 in 2023 and missed the conference playoffs. To do that you have to finish lower than 6th, which is exactly what they did.

The Aggies have largely retained their depth from last season (more on that in a separate topic) but the hornets' roster was absolutely gutted. Their star freshman shortstop ditched them for Arkansas. They lost more than 20 players, most of them not seniors. I'm not an expert on this but I think losing over half your team is not a recipe for winning.

The Big West schedule is dull and not worth examining in depth. If the Aggies actually beat a team other than Bakersfield or UCR that may change.

The Ags are 7-5 after smoking Sac 10-5. Two losses only by one run. Acosta had three doubles (?), and Felix a 2-run home run.

This weekend at Santa Clara for 3, then 3 at UC Irvine.

BTW, I think I heard Dunning and Greg Wong broadcasting somewhere. On what station, and is Wong still a student?

    Go Ags.

    Wong graduated in 2015:

I think he’s really good on the radio broadcasts of football and basketball

Greg does a great job. He also does the ESPN+ games for women's basketball and also softball.

I don’t follow baseball as closely as some on the boards - occasionally checking the stories in the website. After a second win over UCR last night, they moved to 27-25 with a final game vs UCR followed by home series vs bottom-of-the-conference Bakersfield to follow. Seems like a winning record is well within reach (a 30-win season would be a stretch). Considering where things were a couple years back, that seems like a big turnaround.

Great comeback win by the Aggies today!

The short story: After being shutout for eight straight innings, the UC Davis Aggies rallied to score seven in the ninth inning, walking it off on Mark Wolbert's two-run home run to pick up the 7-6 victory over the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners Thursday.

Yesterday's win assures them of at least a .500 season. A lot better than last season's 17-37 record.

The Ags won another wild one today 9-8 over Bakersfield in 13 innings. The Aggies trailed 8-7 going into the bottom of the 13th and tied the game at 8 apiece with no outs and the bases still loaded but the Ags grounded into 2 force outs at home. Then the Bake relief pitcher was forced to leave the game after the umps determined that the Bake manager had made two visits to the mound in the inning. The Bake manager was not happy but he had to bring in another reliever who hit the Aggie batter with his first pitch forcing in the winning run for the Ags. Crazy!

One game left in the season now. Go Ags!

To go from 6-35 two years ago after the fallout of the hazing scandal to a winning record this season is a tremendous accomplishment by HC Nicholson and the players in the program.

Ags lost a close one 3-2 today and finish with a winning season 29-27 overall. Great year for the Aggies and the Aggie coaching staff. This program is on a fast rise!

Look forward to following UCD baseball a bit more closely next season. I've got old junior college buddies coaching at LSU so I've been following them a lot harder.

The regional games this post season have been phenomenal.
