Here's the link to the article mentioned by movielover. It's a really good read about the "darlings of the Midwest region:"
Excerpt: "Kansas brought a ton of fans to Tulsa, plus a Hall of Fame coach and the likely National Player of the Year. It’s a treat having the Jayhawks in town, but it’s nowhere near the best story at this NCAA regional.
For that, we turn to Charles Cook, who plays trumpet in the UC Davis band. Cook told me about his university’s annual “Picnic Day,” where “clubs come together and do different things, and professors put together science shows and do stuff where they put something in a balloon, pop it and have sparks shoot out, and the crowd goes, ‘Woooo!’"
looks like there is one in Portland at the Yard House. the Cal Aggie Alumni facebook page has a link to all the watch parties. up to 20 now. all over the place. very cool. and its dead week on campus so the students should be watching in big numbers.
The amount on publicity that UC Davis is getting from the Aggies run is phenomenal. I just found a article by CNN on Chima Moneke. I hope the higher-ups in Mrak are following all press and media attention that this basketball team is generating for the school. It's high time they recognize that value of what successful D1 athletics can do for promoting public awareness of the whole university and start giving athletics more support.
Excerpt: "It's been a long journey for Chima Moneke, and it's not over yet.
The son of Nigerian diplomats has lived on five different continents. He hasn't seen his parents since 2009, when he moved back to Australia. He considers Canberra his home town."
"Now in North America, Moneke is a junior forward at the University of California Davis. For the first time in program history, the Aggies are in the NCAA tournament, the premier college basketball postseason bonanza that can turn obscure student athletes into pro prospects overnight."
I sure hope that the academic senate, professors and everyone else who fought tooth and nail against D1, and also propogated the rigid interpretation of the archaic Davis Way, are not reveling in this glory. This is the benefit of athletic success. Half of the universities in the bracket would be unknown entities without their athletics.
when you make it to the NCAA AND have seniors who are about to graduate with degrees, it shows that D1 success and academics can coexist. what other event can bring the entire campus, community and alumni together like this. i'm hoping some day making the NCAA will be more routine, but it will always be a community builder!
Search volume for "uc davis" on Google is the highest it's been since you-know-what. It was already on the upswing due to admissions letters on Friday but when this is all said and done it'll be a clear local maximum.
I am not getting my hope up too much for a win tonight, but about 12 seasons ago a small private school about 10 miles from my house wrecked a few brackets. With a roster of true student athletes Bucknell knocked off Kansas in the first round 64-63. A 16 seed has to win sometime.
every time they show the players in interviews, they just come off better and better. great ambassadors for a great university. what an experience for them. what a great time to be an Aggie!
