Pretty sure USD got an autobid for winning the Pioneer conference. They went 8-0 in conference and 9-2 overall. We were their worst loss of the season. They demolished the other teams in the pioneer.
Tough draw for Sac getting left out especially after they hammered SUU and SUU pasted NAU.
I think that the Ags probably spoiled Sac's chances by coming back from 31 down to nearly winning the game. If Sac would have rolled up the Ags by a big score, it would have been hard to keep them out of the playoffs.
Yardage after three quarters is something like 340-130. USD has 170 rushing yards. Starting to better understand our run heavy game plan vs NAU. Jacks have three turnovers also
They were playing for their coach all year after he was told this was it...then it is announced that he was coming back after the last game. Emotional let down?
I wonder if they are rethinking their reversed decision. USD was a pretty good team. They moved the ball well against us. We had some big plays that made it seem more one sided than it was. Remember the 80 yard TD run on a 4th and 1?
USD D was super. Tackled and swarmed. Controlled both lines of scrimmage and played very smart. Reminded me of the Ags back in the day against superior athletes. Northern Arizona looked out of sorts and shell -shocked all game. They were never in it.
USD will likely lose soundly against NDSU who is much more stable and consistent tha. NAU. But I will look forward to watching the game.
Non scholarship USD dominated on defense. Plan set up by defensive coordinator Steve Irwin. NAU had 4 possessions in the 1st quarter for a -29 yards.
San Diego Union
"But the story of the night was USD’s defense. Northern Arizona came in averaging 32 points a game. The Lumberjacks boasted the FCS’ eighth-best passing attack. Lindsey raved about NAU quarterback Case Cookus beforehand.
"But defensive end Jonathan Petersen, linebacker KJ Mahoney, safety Colton Giorgi and the rest of their mates unleashed a devastating performance. The Toreros forced three turnovers, racked up four sacks and compiled nine tackles for losses, holding the high-wire Lumberjacks to one touchdown."
Despite being "non scholarship" I guarantee you the whole USD football team is not paying full MSRP on tuition. They can certainly offer non-athletic scholarships and aid to individuals who happen to be athletes. Even if USD didn't join Big Sky, I think they had 3 OOC games this year. It would be cool if those regularly became UCD, CP, and SAC. Perhaps there could be a California Cup rivalry between the four. Part of what made the NCAC days fun (aside from winning) was that schools were close enough that you knew the opponent and visiting fans would travel. Doubt you find many people in the general population in California who know (or care) what state Weber State is in.
