UCSB alumnus and amateur architect Munger kicks in $200 Million for 4,500 bed, 11 story, $1.5 B dormitory. Influential panel member resigns over 'experiment'.
"Esteemed architecture man Paul Goldberger described the design as “a grotesque, sick joke — a jail masquerading as a dormitory.” Also, apparently there is one shared toilet per eight bedrooms? Yikes."
Hey, no windows, not a problem. Put up pictures of windows. No air? Go outside. UCSB is taking a lot of very hostile nationally bad PR over this and well they should. For their administration to fold for their billionaire alum’s 200M on a 1.5B project is just insane. I predict it will be killed. Kids won’t stand for it.
This is a dumb design. The guy is 97. I’m sure the coastal commission and environmental impact report can be used to run the clock. I’ve stayed in hotels with windows facing interior atriums, like embassy suites kind of places and interior views can be workable. But this just looks like human storage. Kind of reminds me of a scaled up version of Leach Hall in Tercero, which was ultimately bulldozed as an ineffective design. I get the idea is that a bed is just a place to sleep and not every room can have an ocean view, but the cost for such an odd design is very high - about $330k per bed. The most recent dorm project in Davis was $131k per bed, which itself was expensive. Also not sure how this would meet fire code, where typically sleeping areas require two means of exit.
"You've got to get used to the fact that billionaires aren't the most popular people in our society," Munger told MarketWatch over the weekend. "I'd rather be a billionaire and not be loved by everybody than not have any money."
". But he has no plans to bring his dorm designs to other universities.
"No, I won't do it. I'm ready to die very shortly," He said. "But I do expect this dorm will be copied four more times on the USCB campus and many more times than that on the other campuses on the UC system and I expect this to spread all over the country. It's a better mouse trap."
