• Spring Schedule
    Ah, Makes sense.
That being said, depending on the program a single, full-time grad student can be eligible for a LOT of federal aid at the grad school level. So I'm wondering if in effect the team gets the equivalent of having a player on a partial without it counting against the limit.
  • Spring Schedule
Exciting schedule, but also kinda terrifying. Three (possibly) top-25 teams with maybe even two of them being top 10. Play at our level from last year and that's a 3-3 record, yikes
  • Spring Schedule
funds as in no athletic scholarships for it, or no aid of any kind?

Speaking from experience I definitely got grants and scholarships from SDSU for my MBA. I don't see why an athlete at say Cal Poly wouldn't have a similar eligibility if they were also a full time masters student, regardless of sports.
  • Donation drive
I wonder if for this kind of thing, some of the revenue sports' donors feel like it's double dipping to invest in a drive like this because they're already doing things like the Team Aggie donations for season ticket eligibility.

Then again, that didn't seem to stop the WBB boosters from pouring it on. And there are far more football alumni and attendees out there.

I do really like this "gamified" format though. It was a trival but fun thrill to donate early and see my donation bump one of the smaller teams' total up another digit.
  • New Uniforms
I noticed that as well. I think the scale/grid thing was an Adidas template because I remember seeing a few other schools have it. I guess we opted for the "no-scale" option this year.

Seems like minimalism is the new theme, excepting the nameplates.
  • Aggie alum is co-winner of Nobel Prize
    Amazing news.

We should have a Nobel Laureate bike rack now, like UCB does with parking spaces.
  • New Helmets for the 2020-21 Season
The gold helmets are classic and should still be the mainstay, but these could bring some amazing alternate looks. Blue-gray-blue on the road?
  • 2020 Men's Basketball Big West Tournament
just when I thought the season couldn't turn into any more of a letdown as an sdsu fan...
  • 2020 Women's Big West Conference Tournament
I tend not to fault organizations for caution; safety is paramount. I wasn't even too mad about getting sent home from the G1C last night once I read about the NBA situation.

Mad props to all that the women accomplished this year, they played their hearts out and certainly were deserving of a postseason berth.

In my eyes, they went to the tournament, regardless of whether they ever physically take to the court.
  • 2020 Men's Basketball Big West Tournament
There's a good post on the UCD Reddit purportedly from a professor showing how the number of simultaneous cases can be spread out to stay under the hard limit of how many patients our system has room for. Would link if I can find it on mobile.

It's true that for many people this isn't worse than the flu and currently it's not as big, it does have a higher death rate and is apparently more contagious. So the precautions make sense from a logistical / lack of research perspective even though individual danger is small
  • 2020 Men's Basketball Big West Tournament
If I'm remembering right, weren't we 80 or so in RPI during the Hawkins season? And we didn't really sniff the bubble.

Plus from what I've read it looks like the B1G and Pac are poised to put most of their teams in the tournament. There won't be a lot of spots that the committee would want to give to mid majors with that kind of crop in contention
  • 2020 Women's Big West Conference Tournament
that looks like the parking lot next to Hickey, so I assumed the Pelicans were using the normal ICA basketball facility.

As far as I know the revenue sport teams train primarily at hickey or -- in the case of football -- the stadium and IM fields
  • 2020 Women's Big West Conference Tournament
The crazy thing about this photo is that it's hard to tell in isolation how unusually tall the WBB players are, and yet Zion makes them look very average.

Super excited to see him play on Wednesday (though I'll be cheering for the Kings of course). I've been holding on to these tickets since September or so.
  • Coach Gross - Coach of the Year (again!)
The crazy thing is that despite how much this was a rebuilding year for us the gap between Gross' program and everyone else may have actually grown a little. The next closest teams were three games behind.

    Insanity.

Big West TV is starting to be very picky about what browser and settings I'm using. On my PC, Edge shows it just fine but with Firefox I have to disable some of the tracking blockers
  • The Home Stretch
Regarding my earlier frustration with letting the other team take the last shot, I just saw UCLA and SDSU (my other two schools) both lose in the same fashion today back to back by just sitting there waiting for the opponent to make the final shot. (in fairness SDSU was actually tied but the same principle still applied).

I honestly can't remember the last time I saw this actually work out for team playing defense at the end. It's infuriating.
  • EWU faculty report critical of football program and athletic department budget.
It's really confusing to see a Colfax reference on this forum and it not referring to the Norcal foothills Colfax....

(sorry for making the thread go on even longer)

Playing for not-getting-injured and potentially NCAA seeding now.

If I'm remembering right that the womens tournament factors in regionality more heavily in determining seeds, it looks like there's still a path to get better than a 16 seed. Looking at other West Coast conferences, it would really help us if Saint Mary's or Santa Clara -- who both won today and have worse records than us -- won the WCC tournament. Similarly, it would help if anybody but Kansas City won the WAC. MWC already had their two seed win unfortunately, and I'm not sure the committee would seed a Pac-12 team below us on principle.

Edit: also anyone outside of top 2 in Big Sky winning their tourney next week would be good
  • The Home Stretch
I don't understand why, WHY, teams with 1-possession leads always give the other team a chance to take the final shot. If you're up two with 40 seconds left, go for a two-for one or -- on the opponent's final possession -- try to nab the ball and get a strip or foul with <30 seconds left.

Maybe there's advanced analytics I'm not privy to, but it honestly seems like a 50-50 game at best if you have the lead by 1 or 2 but the other team has the last shot. It's so annoying how many times I've seen "comebacks" end out of that situation.
  • WBB: UC Riverside (8-19, 4-9) at UCD (15-11, 10-3) 2:30 pm Saturday, February 29th
First few rounds are hosted by one of the Socal schools, but we haven't played in those in a long time thanks to the Women's tournament bye structure.
