Ags lose 62-58. They could keep up, but Fullerton played well enough in the last few minutes to keep a two-possession lead.

Ugh. I wish we had TJ.

I like to make note of when a MBB/WBB/FB team clinches a winning season -- because it happened so rarely when I was a student -- but completely failed to notice for this year's team because they've been racking up wins so fast.

As of the Aggie women getting past 16 wins, there have now been 6 winning seasons for MBB/WBB/FB -- including 5 postseason appearances so far -- since I graduated, whereas there were only 2 in my entire time as a student. This department has gone from 0 to 100 fast

Makes sense, I'd probably get a house in Davis if I was retiring off a coaching salary

Wait, is that Bob Williams on color commentary? Marsh just made a reference to him knowing Alan Williams

Schmidt just dropped a beautiful punt straight down at about the 5, giving it a nice bounce for the coverage team to grab.

I tuned in to the Iron game (on CBS now) and saw Schmidt is their holder. Not sure if he's punted yet.

I watched most of the SD Fleet game last night and their QB play left a lot to be desired (they benched their starter after 3 quarters, and the next guy up threw a game-ending pick in the endzone). It would be interesting if Maier gets a look from them.

Other than that, I generally liked the quality of play. The teams seem to be at least as athletic as decent FBS pro-style teams, though they're a little rough around the edges. Production quality is also really good and the mic'd up players, coaches, and review official are nice touches. Sadly not many more games will be nationally broadcast, unless you have NFL Network.

They ran ads side-by-side with the stadium feed during team timeouts and in between some plays (I think on turnovers). If felt way more immersive than NFL and national college broadcasts for that reason alone, though reddit seems to think that the usual media timeouts will return if the league gets more sponsors.

I'm pretty sure the color commentator made up the nickname on the spot, not that I'm complaining. This commentator crew was actually pretty entertaining, as far as late-night ESPN units go:

"All UCSB has to do is make two free throws, miss the third, and get it to bounce outside for the three. Easy, right?"

    "I've done it!"

    "Wait, you have?"

I know we're probably not competing for a title this year without serious chaos, but...

It just feels like we're back. Especially with the schedule ahead -- even with all the usual chaos in the conference, everyone has to especially fear the Aggies, the way it should be in the Big West.

Really liked this half of Aggie basketball. Didn't have to play great the whole time, just kept it close when we were struggling for points and then kept the momentum going once a few things started going the Ags' way. Brings me back to some of the gutty ESPN wins from back in the day

Up 6 at the half. Ags started really slow but got into rhythm and held onto the lead for much of the second quarter.

Cal Poly won't go away though
  • WBB 2/7 7 pm: UCD (15-6 & 7-1) @ Santa Barbara (4-16 & 1-6)
I can't remember the last time I felt so comfortable about an Aggie team's path to a conference title, regardless of sport. A lot of hoops left to play but this team is killing it

Aaandd today I learned Siler's name is actually Joe
  • MBB 2/2 6 pm: Aggies (5-14, 1-4) @ Riverside (8-15, 2-6)
9-0 start for the Ags with a TJ-less and Siler-less lineup. This is some of the best I've seen the Ags play in almost a year
  • WBB 2/2 2 pm: CSUN (11-10, 5-2) at UCD (14-5, 6-1)
This was the first time I was able to get to the game since the championships started rolling in. The women play some very entertaining basketball when they have momentum. Third quarter was hard to watch, though I agree that seemed to be an anomaly born from picky officiating and a physical opponent
  • WBB @ Fullerton 1/26
Been a while since I turned off a UCD sports game because I felt terrible for the other team.

Anything other than a conference championship for this team would now definitely be a surprise
  • Bruce Edwards Says Ags Will Go FBS in 5-10 Years
I'm thinking the entertainment competition argument holds less weight than it used to. All three teams have Netflix as their biggest competitor for eyeballs on a saturday night these days
  • UCSB @ UC Davis game preview; by Gauchofreg & BlueGoldAg
Thanks for stopping by and the quality writeup. UCSB looks to be for real this year. I almost went to the game tonight; if I was feeling better and the weather was nicer it would have been cool to see.

Wouldn't be surprised to see y'all turn heads in March...
  • Bruce Edwards Says Ags Will Go FBS in 5-10 Years
We had one great year, but we have tons working in our favor.

I looked up some comparisons between the Ags and EWU and NDSU a while ago; the amount of people and money the UCD community has compared to those to schools, and especially EWU, is insane. We could compete with EWU dollar for dollar with only a fraction of the donor, sponsor, and admin interest because of how many more resources we have kicking around.

But I'll parrot others on here that I'd love to see us become an FCS power first. We can do that with pretty much the current level of interest and investment. Davis could potentially be one of the highest-profile MWC schools too, but it would require much more buy-in than the school's teams currently have.
