• MBB: Aggies vs Oakland (3rd Round, Great Alaska Shootout Consolation)
    Comments from Coach Les:

"Oakland is a good basketball team that is going to win 20 to 25 games, win their league and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. I told my team that we went toe-to-toe with them; we have some things that we need to clean up, but I like where this team is as long as we stay healthy and continue to work," said UC Davis head coach Jim Les.

"I told the team that I was pleased overall with their effort, and I'm encouraged, not discouraged, by this tournament and where they are thus far." Added Les, "This team has a huge ceiling, I love everyone's competitive nature."

4th game in 6 days, OBUA, plus lots of travel. With 12 of the first 15 games on the road the Ags will travel over 24,000 miles before league starts. We should certainly be travel hardened by then!
  • MBB: Aggies vs Oakland (3rd Round, Great Alaska Shootout Consolation)
The Aggies fall to the Grizzlies 79-66 and will head home from Alaska with a 5-3 record overall. The difference in this game was our inability to slow Oakland's 3 point shooting 10 of 24 for 42% combined with our poor 3 point shooting 4 of 18 for 22%. We won the the battle of the boards 37-36 but were outscored at the FT line 19-12. Chima Moneke had a monster game scoring 21 and pulling down 12 boards. Mikey Henn had 11 and Siler Schneider 10.

The game was closer than the final score as the Ags. This was the 4th game for the Ags in 6 days and they have nothing to hand their heads for as they played well today against a talented team.

The Aggies are off now until next Saturday when they travel to Moscow, Idaho, to tangle with the always tough Vandals.

Martez Walker banked in a 35 foot 3 ball at the buzzer that gave Oakland the lead 37-34 at the break in an evenly matched half of play. The difference so far, as it was against Weber State, is the hot shooting by the Grizzlies from downtown - 7/13 for 54%. The Ags are battling well against the athletic Grizzlies and won the boards 15-10. Too many poor passes again for the Ags who have already have 8 TO's.

Chima Moneke is leading the Aggies with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. Schneider has 8 and Henn 7.

We can win this game if we continue to play well and cut down the TO's.

    Go Ags!

  • MBB: Ags vs Drake (2nd Round, Great Alaska Shootout Consolation Bracket)
It sounded like the game was not pretty but we ground out the W. This was a win by committee as the Ags had 9 players with 12 minutes or more of PT.

Lamar showed his leadership again and lead the Ags with 17 while shutting down the Bulldogs' leading scorer, Reed Timmer, who averages 17 ppg. Timmer, from New Berlin, Wisconsin, was recruited hard by Les but chose to go to Drake. Lemar is our stopper defender and he's doing a really good job against the best the opposition has to offer.

We did some really nice things in this game. For one, we played well down the stretch on both ends of the floor with the game on the line and hit some big shots when it counted the most. Drake had some size but we won the battle of the boards 33-18 and that's a significant improvement from last night. We also shot a good percentage: 49% overall and 41% from 3. However, we had 18 TO's and that's way too many and will need to take better care of the ball against good competition. Overall, it was a nice win and a good recovery from last night's blowout.

The Ags will play their 3rd game in 3 days tomorrow when they tangle with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies from Rochester, Michigan, located in the northern outskirts of the Detroit area. They are big, strong and athletic and they will be a very big challenge for the Aggies. We'll need to bring our A game to stay competitive with the Grizzlies.

I was just listening to the radio broadcast and checking live stats periodically. No tv today or tomorrow.

35-30 Aggies at the half. Les is playing a variety of player combinations. Lamar has 9 and Mooney 8 as the Ags shot 54% while holding the Bulldogs to 39%. We controlled the boards 15-9 also.

Georgi played 11 minutes. No White or Goode. Not sure why Lawrence is out today.

19-9 Ags with 12:01 to go in the half...deja vu from last night..hope not..keep it going Ags!

    Thursday games results:

Iona 64 Drake 53 - The Gaels overcame a 5 point halftime deficit to down the Bulldogs.

Weber State 86 UC Davis 58 - The Ags were within 7 at the half but collasped in the 2nd half as the Wildcats romped to a big margin of victory.

I hear that. We still have to have the players that have the ability and size to execute the hard work of rebounding. I've been watching CSUN play New Mexico and the Matadors athleticism and ability in the paint is impressive. Really not sure we have the talent to match up with teams like that.
  • MBB: Ags vs Drake (2nd Round, Great Alaska Shootout Consolation Bracket)
Even with creativity it is awfully hard to win when you get out shot and out rebounded.
  • MBB: Ags vs Drake (2nd Round, Great Alaska Shootout Consolation Bracket)
Weber State surprised me in just how good they were last night. I also think that the best teams in the Big West this year, which appear to be LB State, CSUN and UC Irvine, are on par or better than Weber State. I'd like to see us competing on even ground with those programs but I'm not sure we are there yet. Hope I'm wrong!
  • Quick Reaction or Well Thought Out Plan?
Nice summary an analysis, 6th. (Y)
  • MBB vs Weber State (First Round, Great Alaska Shootout)
The Wildcats exposed some glaring weaknesses that we have on both ends of the floor and I'm not sure we have the personnel to do a whole lot about it.
  • MBB vs Weber State (First Round, Great Alaska Shootout)
Ags go down in flames 86-58. We got totally outplayed on both ends of the floor. This was not the kind off game the Ags wanted to have on national tv.
  • MBB vs Weber State (First Round, Great Alaska Shootout)
And defense is the heart of this team..when we struggle on D we're in trouble because we just don't have the offensive weapons to be able to rely on the offense when the D struggles. For all the emphasis that Les puts on guard play we are not a team with much of a 3 point threat.

Ooof...this one is getting real ugly..
