• The UC Davis Football Draft/UDFA Thread
I see that a former tight end at the University of San Diego, Dalton Kincaid, transferred to Utah and was taken in the first round. That is even better than Joshua Kelley did a few years ago starting at Davis without a full scholarship and then going in the fourth round after transferring to UCLA. I’m sure there will be a lot of players tempted to try, but the extra year gave a lot of the recent transfers more remaining eligibility, so they won’t be as attractive to the FBS teams. I think we wont see as many graduate student transfers, as those years get used up.
Transferring up and getting drafted happens but I bet it is a low probability event. College recruiting seems to identify the top players better than it did a few decades back.
  • “New” FCS football conference
Pretty competitive conference, I think they deserve an automatic bid. We played a few of those teams.
  • 2023 Season Preview
They ended winter practice March 4th. They don't generate any stories about the team during the off season anymore. They do have a couple of press releases, but there is no news in them.
  • 2023 Week 1: UC Davis @ Texas A&M Commerce
Did anyone comment that their next game after Davis is Sac State in Sacramento? Pretty tough scheduling for them, since they have some usually strong teams in conference as well.
  • 2023 Week 1: UC Davis @ Texas A&M Commerce
The 2021 Tulsa game started at 6:30 and the temperature was 93 degrees. The Aggie fitness was really a high point of that game as we dominated at the end of the game.
The time currently listed on the Texas A&M Commerce site is 6:00 PM.
  • 2023 Season Preview
Poerio was discussed in the Aggie Pro Day article, which says last year was his last season, even though he still has a year of eligibility left, so he’s moving on.
  • Hack City's 2023 Big Sky Football Preview
Ambagtsheer hopefully will be back healthy. After that scouting report from a Cal fan, I was watching for his return, but he only got into one game, and left with an injury.

    I like Chukwudobe too.
He is now 195lb and he runs with determination.
    I don’t know if he’s sacrificed much speed but he ran a sub 11 second 100 in high school. (They did a profile on him in winter of 2020, but they incorrectly understated his speed by a full second}
We haven’t seen him catch anything.
  • Hack City's 2023 Big Sky Football Preview
One thing in favor of the new QB coach is that he coached a QB that got a lot of yards per completion.
We are lucky to have Larison who gained nearly 500 yards at 7.5 yards per carry and is a good receiver. We have to hope our backs can be a durable as Gilliam, he was amazing in that regard.
  • Hack City's 2023 Big Sky Football Preview
These guys talked about four teams, notably ignoring Weber. Davis doesn’t play Montana State or Idaho this season. I think Sac comes back to the pack in 2023, Montana will have a new QB, likely a guy at this third school without playing much so QB will be a big question for them. Montana has supposedly the best HS recruit at running back they’ve ever had. Overall, I think the league schedule is maybe a bit easier, with us missing some of the tougher teams.
  • Mike Cody promoted to OC
Yeah but he was comparing to prior years, where he said they had worked on new things more, that they didn’t end up using., It sounded like they didn’t put in much that was new. Which is noteworthy when you change offensive coordinators.
  • Mike Cody promoted to OC
Hawkins answered some questions after the last winter scrimmage
    https://ucdavisaggies.com/news/2023/3/4/football-aggies-conclude-winter-ball-with-saturday-scrimmage.aspx

Hawkins said they focused on fundamentals, and that Mike Cody has been around Plough and Cody Hawkins so he knows how they do things here. I take that to mean they aren’t changing much.
  • New QB coach
Here is a profile of the QB coach.

H.S. Graduate in Oklahoma, then a year at a Connecticut prep school with likely goal of getting an Ivy League scholarship, then offered walk on at Oklahoma State, injured in spring so never played for them, then walk on at North Texas, best game was his last with two rushing touchdowns coming in as reserve. Earned multiple degrees before using up his eligibility and then more as an assistant. So clearly a hard working and studious guy. 30 years old, never an on field coach. Must be something special about him, because Davis has two guys on staff, who’ve coached QBs but are now the running back coach and the tight end coach.

  • Big Sky Recruiting 2023
NAU had some good recruiting classes in recent years too.
I was surprised they fell off so much.
  • Big Sky Recruiting 2023
There haven’t been the usual recruit class rankings for BigSky teams, Cal Poly and Portland State made Hero Sports top ten. Northern Arizona brought in 10 Transfers, mostly from FCS schools but includes a QB from Cal, Kai Millner, and a linebacker from UCLA, Jeremiah Trojan. Sac State getting Carson Camp is big.
I think our class is a good one but no transfers.
  • 2023 Football Recruiting
Sam Huard , played four games. Former 5* recruit for Washington,
They also have a former 4* recruit offensive lineman who transferred from UCLA, after attempting suicide. He’s from San Luis Obispo, so maybe a wise move.

  • 2023 Football Recruiting
They are all three star recruits. I don’t think they can even get the * ratings right much less accurately rate these guys rated 1 - 50
  • 2023 Football Recruiting
Are you believing the David Rasor Cal Poly bit? I think that’s just a mistake.
Out of the fifty Cal Poly has three, Davis has three, if you move Rasor to Davis
  • 2023 Football Recruiting
Judging by the committed elsewhere list on 1st page of this discussion, we lost only one recruit to a Big Sky team, Sac State and a couple to Ivy League. This is a multi year pattern.
Good players from California go to other Big Sky schools, but we apparently don’t compete for those players. The ones we contest for we lose to FBS or Ivy League.
