Nava is one of the players who played at a non NCAA program (JC) and there is a recent rule granting all players in that category a fifth year if their eligibility otherwise expired in 2024 season. He played four years straight.

Judging from the Spring roster, Eli Simonson has found something else to do after starting every game for Davis at left tackle for the last two years.
Only four guys have played significantly, Rodriguez, Souriolle, Collier, Main, both tackles no longer here. Main will be coming off an knee injury.
The rest are mostly underclassmen who have made few short appearances.
Only one OL recruit, the Cleeland brother who had walked on at Washington but hasn’t seen action.

Impressive that they could fill needs so well. In his interview Plough explained they realized they needed to get Defensive Linemen and DBs and they did. Their approach seems to be as Plough described to put the main recruiting effort on high school, but fill out the roster with transfers, so they aren’t dependent on freshmen.

    3 ?
Maybe but depends who you count. Last year we had a linebacker and DB from Cal, and OL from San Diego State, a punter from Cincinnati, a DB from Iowa,, a wide receiver from Boise.

I always figure some guys will find something else to do after putting in four years or so. But losing all of them, if that is indeed the case is a blow. Add Gavin Cooke to the list.

On spring roster missing are Verner, McWilliams, Shamburger, after losing Cotton and Bains to transfers. All those guys had eligibility.
Only seven DBs on roster when the defense plays with five most downs.

They don’t even have a bio posted for Trey. Trey was the placeholder at QB coach when they were waiting for Shelton. Shimabukuro and Burke are the only coaches who have played QB, albeit at a lower level. With the number of young QBs we have you’d think that they need someone who played the position to coach the QBs on individual skills. Plough likely can’t devote the time. Shelton played wide receiver at a very small school.

Just like the great UCLA Fresno rivalry always played in Los Angeles every once in a while.

I’m more concerned about the CBs, very little experience there.
We have two starters at corner back, and a starting safety, who are not on the spring roster, even though all three have remaining eligibility.. This in addition to losing our starting Nickel and backup corner back to transfer..

Must have been a work in progress when i saw it, as it still had Cotton on it.
They have gone back to listing players by eligibility, so a lot of players’ class didn’t change.

Did we lose Winston Williams? Having only played in five games prior to 2024 year, and this being his fifth year, he is definitely eligible,
Robbie may or may not be a loss, we will see. He didn’t play enough for us to judge.
I’m with you 100% on playing talented players so they feel they aren’t wasting years here.

Did you expect a scholar as a Cal State University President? Not many hard science students at the school, maybe none.

Spring 2024. They made that the default but it isn’t new.

WR is thin because the didn’t play many guys that return, Depth development wasn’t important to the coaches. I view depth there as untested not nonexistent, but I’m an optimist. ,
  • Aggie Pride: A UC Davis Football Podcast

I’ve been a big fan of WRs Davis and especially Hutton. But between the players in our roster and this years recruits, they’ll find some productive replacements. The roster mostly doesn’t list players by eligibility, so there are seniors who could play next year if they and the team want that,
It will be interesting if Perez comes back. He did well in South Dakota game.
So that is a topic for the podcast; which seniors, who have eligibility, plan to return? Nava? Perez? Masui? Verner? McWilliams? Alessi? Garretson? I guess we will know when they list a spring roster.
  • UC Davis joining MW for all sports except for football paves a clear path to FBS membership
First right of invitation means the timing of moving up is not solely in Davis’ control. Better be ready to accept when invitation is offered,
It would be interesting what qualifies as a “basketball expense”. Scholarships and salaries, travel, but what else?

Aside from all the OL starters still having eligibility, we have at least three 3 star freshmen and sophomores who had multiple FBS offers. Hopefully everyone returns.

DavisAggie a few weeks back posted a link to an article that “the NCAA Division I Board of Directors granted a blanket waiver to any athletes who attended a non-NCAA school to remain eligible for 2025-26 if they otherwise would have exhausted their eligibility in 2024-25. That applies to Nava, as he played at a JC in 2021. Another player in this category is Grant Garretson
  • Is there any action on the transfer portal?
Plough played fewer players than we’ve been accustomed to seeing. In the Idaho game only 38 players participated which was surprising for a team with as many experienced players as the team had. The starters even occupied most the special team slots.
This last year, if you were third string you didn’t play much, especially in the first part of conference play. Gale and Alexander were featured players last year but seldom played in 2024. Even Fisher played a less significant role in than he did in his redshirt year.
  • Playoff Talk 2024
i just stream, and I only have ESPN+, and this year every game that they also had on ESPN2 or other ESPN variant remained on ESPN+ as well. Last year and I think years prior, if they put the FCS games on the main channels, you couldn’t watch them on ESPN+.I mention this in relation to the bigger audience that you note, the game was still available on ESPN+ which many FCS fans use.
