One head scratcher from last night. Down 3 coming out of the 4:00 media timeout with the ball. We run a designed high pick and roll with Ade which didn’t end well. They got the rebound and a bucket to go up 5. Seemed an odd time to isolate Ade even with their bigs in foul trouble.

That reverse ‘layup’ after an air ball (somebody lost their guy) and an uncontested tip in off a hurried shot were killers, as was the desperation 3 at the end of the shot clock. A stop on any of those and maybe it’s a different outcome.

Last few games we get in a hole late in the first half (tonight after a great opening 4 minutes). Can overcome that vs CSUN or UCSD, but these guys are good.

Anigwe got us back into it and sparked the team (and crowd). Game was there to win.

Decent crowd, good energy. Need a good effort vs an improved Poly to keep momentum

Fanduel has Riverside as 5 1/2 point favorites with about 75% chance of winning. Pretty bold statement about the Highlanders. Gonna take a really good 40 minutes to keep the win streak going.

5:00 tip-off - late lunch at Raisin’ Cane for us before the game! Should avoid the usual late afternoon traffic on 680/80 and get home reasonably early

your comments sound a little more of personal than technical, since you point out the same two guys each posting. Hope these comments aren’t being fed to their teammates - not good for team chemistry.

Johnson had 6 TOS in the first; one in the second. Maybe they altered things at the half, like not trying to force it in the paint?

Also, Pepper led the team with 6 assists.
  • MBB: UC Davis (10-7, 3-2) at UCSD (6-11, 1-4) Mon. Jan. 16 at 3:00 pm
Seemed like the game plan was pound it inside; several of TJs and Eli’s TO were when they tried to force themselves into the key and UCSD defended them well.

I’d like to see Ade take a shot especially after a rebound - looks a little gunshh about getting his shot blocked.

DeBruhl has improved tremendously the past few weeks. He was so rushed and flustered against UOP and EWU, but the past couple games he’s much more in control. Big help.

I tell ya, we make those last couple minutes closer than they need to be! I know we’re protecting agsin the 3 BUT they had 3 layups that were nearly uncontested. Leo and Milling were big off the bench. Offensive boards were huge. Big win to start a big week
  • MBB: UC Davis (10-7, 3-2) at UCSD (6-11, 1-4) Mon. Jan. 16 at 3:00 pm
And defense MUCH better. 61-50 6:15 remaining. Johnson has sat a bit and Leo is playing his best half of the year. We have 12 offensive rebounds

Pepper has 3 fouls - I expect they’ll go at him

not really fast breaks, more trying to press it into the lane and losing it to good defense
  • MBB: UC Davis (10-7, 3-2) at UCSD (6-11, 1-4) Mon. Jan. 16 at 3:00 pm
Much better defense so far; finally a lead 41-40.

They are shooting FT with 13 to go which might not be an advantage
  • MBB: UC Davis (10-7, 3-2) at UCSD (6-11, 1-4) Mon. Jan. 16 at 3:00 pm
Not a great half, down 37-30. They’re shooting 60%. Add that to our 9 turnovers ( Johnson with 5, Pepper with 3) and that’s the story of the half. Their D is tough, but we’re a bit reckless in the key with the ball.

See what we can do differently defensively else if a bad start to the week
  • MBB: UC Davis (10-7, 3-2) at UCSD (6-11, 1-4) Mon. Jan. 16 at 3:00 pm
Tritons have some scorers and are playing tough defense - not many open looks for us. 29-23 then 3:00 to go

I’m guessing she is part of our broadcasting team with Marsh and Williams. Scott posted a picture of the 3 of them on Facebook

Good win. Angiwe came up HUGE down the stretch with 2 offensive boards that led to 5 points (and a 4 point lead in the last 30 seconds). Pepper hit FTs that put it away. Johnson seemed out of sorts in the first half-seemed to be jawing with their bench before his T (earned him a seat for much of the first half), but he was solid in the second half.

Beasley got screwed with a couple questionable calls that led to fouling out - Leo thankfully was solid filling in. Maybe one of his best performances.

One game soon, we’ll get Pepper, Beasley, Johnson, Milling and Anigwe ALL on their A game and that will be a sight to see!

Good crowd (1300) on a wet , 49er Saturday. Keep it going Monday v the Tritons

They’re pounding inside every possession. Their zone is hurting us
  • MBB: CSU Fullerton (9-8, 3-2) at UC Davis (9-7, 2-2) Sat., Jan. 14, 2:00 pm
Between the 49ers and wet weather it might be another sparse crowd. Too bad.

Niners will win big; no need to watch. Follow on live stats and enjoy the Aggies live!

There is a general animosity between us and the Titans. Love to see us beat them

Trip off to an auspicious start. From Scott Marsh:

‘ I am very thankful to report that our plane carrying the UC Davis Men's Basketball team has just landed back safely at the airport. Upon takeoff there was a terrible noise coming from the plane’s engine. For the next 10 minutes or so everybody sat in stunned silence wondering what the heck was going on. The pilot then came on the intercom and informed us a bird had hit our plane at takeoff. He calmly said the engine was still functioning and we were turning back around and landing in Sacramento. For the next 15+ minutes everyone on board sat quietly on board as the horrendous noise continued. There was one child next to me who thought the plane was going to explode. We did our best to tell him we were fine but it wasn’t working. We did notbknow ourselves what might happen. Thanks to the amazing skill and cool headedness of our pilot crew we were able to make a very successful emergency landing back in Sacramento. I have never landed before to police sirens, fire trucks and ambulances on the runway…all I can say at this moment is that I feel so very fortunate to be alive and to have such great family and friends to share it all with. ❤️ ’

Can’t imagine anyone looking forward to getting on another plane
