San Jose had 57 returning players, second lowest in FBS. Basically new coach had to replace 1/2 the roster. Only 2 returning defensive starters, and uncertain QB spot - they were ripe for the picking!

Montana State was a favorite (and won) last week vs New Mexico.

Sac got Stanford last year after a coaching change, big loss of players to transfer portal and uncertainty at QB.

I can’t believe a big sky team would schedule Lincoln (Oakland). They lost their opener 45-7 to Moroski’s College of Idaho!

reading a Cal review in SJ Mercury-News this morning makes it sound like they’re not sure about starting QB. I’d heard that Wednesday at practice from a staffer who is tight with one of their staffers. Wouldn’t be surprised to see 2 or 3 QBs playing.

i think the 2 QB's you mentioned were the only ones to get snaps. Apparently, they are in the battle for #3. I think most of yesterday was 2's and 3's, but not having a roster makes that a guess.

I didn't realize that Logan Kraut had made the transition to LB.

I don’t think our offense will be totally new. At the season ticket event Friday, the offense clips Plough showed were all from his OC days.

I read an article a week or so ago that Cal has 47 new players -20 recruits and 27 transfers. Didn’t mention how many they lost. Biggest recruit was retaining Ott - kind of like us with Lan

I didn’t mean to imply that was ‘the’ reason he stepped down. I think last season wore him down and that game (and the playoff snub) didn’t help.

I talked to Dan last season after the ISU game and he was saying it was the worst experience having to coach against his son. That game seemed to suck the life out of him - and we won.

Nice situation for him. Closer to family and gets to mentor without the day to day stress of coaching.
