Plough is an Aggie through and through. He believes he has had the success he has had because of Sochor and other Aggie greats that have coached him and mentored him. He believes in the values of Aggie Pride and he has stated that he took this job because he believes he can win a national championship here. He is also, above everything else, a family man with 3 young sons and Davis is an ideal community to raise a family.
Money is always an incentive in a job when there is a lack of it and, even if other programs can offer much more, he still makes enough to have a very good life for his family here in Davis. Money isn't the primary factor for staying in a job when there is enough of it; it's all the other things matter more and Davis has all the other things that matter the most to him. I don't see him leaving even if another program offers him several times what UCD can afford.
You're right, but I'll add the caveat that even OSU as a mediocre Pac school pays so much that a) the Plough family could afford two residences and b) even if things go south a single year + buyout would be worth the equivalent of many, many years at UCD. Taking the OSU or similar job wouldn't create a meaningful financial risk or force the Ploughs to move the kids from Davis, though it would mean less time with family which we know is important for Coach Plough.
I think he's set good here for a few years, or more. Coach Sochor and Aggie football mean so much. Oregon State would uproot his family and is super high risk.
its a challenge for us to get them on the schedule. their first game was Sept 20 which would have been our 3 game, even in a normal year (without the zero week and bye). They don't want to come out here for their opener vs a team with 2 games, and traveling cross country for us right before the conference opener isn't ideal. That being said, some of the Ivy's have been out to USD and Poly in the past. I'm not sure if they will opt in to the 12-game schedule (i doubt it) and that will make it even less likely.
So it sounds like there was a pretty good student turnout and that's great to see. I don't know what it will take to get the Davis community at large to show up big numbers on a regular basis though. We have a championship quality program and they deserve more support from the Davis community.
What a coincidence! I wish I had brought some Aggie swag. I could have taken a a great Aggie promo photo at the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe or some other famous landmark here.
I'd love to see a Harvard vs the Aggies game. It would be great to actually get a home and home with them at some point in the future. Two great academic schools with great athletic programs as well...both schools have "true student athletes" who have to get it done in the classroom and on the playing field.
This is a game from earlier in the year, but this Tarleton State team is the real deal, they can score like nobody's business. Upset win @ Army after destroying the Vikings in Hillsboro, they've been basically scoring 50+ every game since.
#3 Tarleton State
@ Portland State, W 42-0
@ Army, W 30-27 (2OT)
vs. Mississippi Valley State, W 59-3
@ Central Arkansas, W 56-10
vs. Chattanooga, W 52-24
vs. Southern Utah, W 52-42
@ Utah Tech, W 41-23
For those who haven’t watched it, it sounds like the coaches already applied for a medical redshirt but the NCAA denied it and they are appealing. Plough said the NCAA’s position is that the Mercer game counts as one of the contests toward the 30%, which he doesn’t think is fair if the stats don’t count.
Based on his comments, it sounds like 4 games out of 11 (36%) would be considered “30% or fewer contests” of the season’s contests but 5 games out of 12 (41%) wouldn’t be. So the most likely conclusion I think we can draw from what he said is that the NCAA rounds the 30% limit up to the nearest integer (ie. 30% of 11 games is 3.3 which means you get 4 games max) for the purposes of the medical redshirt threshold.
Another, non-mutually exclusive, way to interpret his comments is that they’re trying to argue the twins played 4 games instead of 5 because regardless of how the NCAA rounds or doesn’t round, having 4 instead of 5 preserves the possibility of getting under 30% with playoff games.
It seems crazy that when the game’s official outcome is literally “No Contest”, the NCAA would consider this to be a contest for the purposes of the medical redshirt rule.
About 13:00 - Coach Plough discusses the Appeal they'll file w NCAA regarding the Connor twins eligibility; apparently the NCAA is counting the Mercer game
if you have outstanding tacklers and a great scheme - maybe. But kicking the ball into the end zone works every time. Today’s kickers should vibe able to do that. I am not sure that the special teams coach is scheming a short kick.
Strength of schedule takes a hit with Idaho's shocking loss to Northern Colorado. The Vandals pretty much need to win out now. That game up here will be difficult.
