  • COVID-19
I'm hoping that some of these COVID- 19 precautions become permanent practices, as they are common sense. Many restaurants have filthy dining rooms. Hopefully this will force them to clean up their acts. Disease transmission aside it's just plain unpleasant to have to endure the nuisance behavior of others up close and personal. If I don't know you, then you should be a minimum of six feet away from me. As far as I'm concerned bars (not bar/restaurants) and clubs can just stay closed. Every day a bar or club is not open I figure at least one poor decision per venue (such as drunk driving or going home with a stranger) is prevented. That's at a bare minimum.

Realistically though, bars and clubs do provide a significant amount of tax money, so they'll be back. Two thing that should definitely be enforced are drink and time limits. Say the bar cuts you off at two drinks or 30 min ? If the bar serves actual meals you can stay a bit longer if you have dinner there. I don't know how they would effectively enforce limits, but just some ideas people will kick around.
  • San Jose game out?
It's going to be kind of a weird and scary year for the city of Davis. If classes are online only where is the need to live there ? The city's restaurants and coffee places rely very heavily on the students (And this time I'm not wrong). It would be like a really extended Summer Session. It's easy to forget there's a time each year when the students are mostly gone and the townies come out of hiding. I've done Summer Sessions- very depressing. Tough living situation for students who would live off campus. Do you sign a lease in with the expectation that on- campus classes will resume later in the year or do you commit to commuting if that happens ? There might be *gasp* vacancies in Davis.

I'm not one of those dozen but point taken lol. I thought the campus experience at Sac State did suck though. To be fair UCD does have a fair number of dumb smart kids too.

So here's a link to an article from the Aggie that says that UC Davis student fees accounted for about 57% (23.5 million) of the athletics budget in 2018- 2019. I stand corrected.

    Student fees

So it doesn't pay to recite things from Annual Fund training in 1997 I suppose. :)

The Aggie's math does seem to work out. However, the Sac Bee's only suggests less than $1.5 million is from alumni donations. How accurately does the Bee cover anything UC Davis ?

As desirable as UC Davis is you can't bank on there being an endless supply of potential students who can can afford (and want to) to attend. We have yet to completely see the financial impact of the virus.

There is after all a very real reason behind Dr. Blue's plea for financial support. He's not doing it to get himself a new house or lights for Dobbins Stadium- athletics really needs the money. He's not just sweating about a decrease in 3.5% of his budget.

If they are forced to make do with less, then cutting sports is a possible consequence. I'd hate to see baseball go, as it's the only reason I come to Davis anymore .

It would be an unpleasant thought but perhaps UCD and similarly- situated colleges should just take 2021 off from competition and re- asses their programs and financial resources. UCD funds their athletic programs primarily through alumni donations and those alumni are certainly taking a financial hit in one way or another. Meanwhile enrollment may drop because students' families can't afford the tuition. I would be very surprised if UCD came out of this without cutting any sports. It won't be football, but baseball could be on the chopping block, as could some high- travel sports that do not generate revenue like lacrosse, field hockey, or golf. Football is probably the one sport that represents a real community event.

How about "San Jose State football fans- all eight of them- are concerned about the potential impact that the coronavirus may have on their schedule"?

I got the impression that SJSU's football stadium is a dump when I passed it on the way to Excite Ballpark last year. Kind of looked like a relic from the 70's or 80's, and not a well- kept one either. BTW Excite Ballpark is no beauty either- very cookie- cutter looking. At least the memorabilia strewn throughout the park are appealing.

Here's an item to ponder- if San Jose State's atheltics season were cancelled would anybody (other than those directly involved in it) care ? Seriously SJSU, be good at something please !
It's hard to decide which CSU I care about less- San Jose State or Cal State Bakersfield.
  • Update today from Dr. Blue
The only number I trust is the death toll. The # of reported infections is misleading because of shortcomings in reporting (Washington state, for example), and there's no way to really account for the untested. The situation is evolving every day- no one can really have a valid claim to be an expert on the coronavirus .

We have a president who from his business background, is business first most of the time.
When even he is forced to change course you get a real idea of how severe this is. While I do expect the re- opening of the country to start soon (maybe even May 1st), it will be staggered + there will still be restrictions. Non- essential businesses that have less foot traffic but that can provide adequate social distancing will be first.

Keeping people apart is saving lives. I think not being able to see sports is a small price for that. I just pretend it's December.
  • Update today from Dr. Blue
I saw that Dr. Fauci is predicting another outbreak in the fall. I don't know the exact reasoning but I believe he sees another less- severe wave coming from when business as normal resumes and there is less social- distancing. It would likely be less severe because theoretically the people who had and survived it would've built up some resistance + the hospitals would be better prepared. Not to mention that there will be hundreds of thousands,if not millions, of people who won't be vectors- having died and all.

For that reason I think there will be some creative social- distancing employed. Perhaps one or more football games are played without spectators. With the stands empty they can have the players not currently in the game sit in stands far from each other rather than be cramped standing on the sidelines. Basketball could do the same thing if needed.

It could even impact sports NEXT spring. Baseball + Softball practice in the fall.
  • Update today from Dr. Blue
Lol. The oven mitt is not social distancing.
  • Picnic Day
That was hilarious. Unfortunately it's not entirely ridiculous considering some of the crap that goes on there.
It's gotten to the point where I'd be more worried about being killed by a z- tard riding an e- scooter while texting-than the coronavirus- at UCD. I really don't support the university's direction and the new age brainwashing- dumbassery that the students blindly obey. When they had that big protest about the bank branch+ camped on the quad I yelled at them, "Stop wasting your parents' money and go to class, fools !"

Brains do not equal common sense. The only funds UCD gets from me anymore are the pennies from my state income taxes that get funnelled down + whatever I spend on baseball games. The latter is going away soon too. Shakedown letters go right in the shredder. That's just my personal choice, not encouraging anyone else to withhold their support.

All the same I'm perfectly fine with them cancelling Picnic Day. Ever since the year Scott Heinig (sp ?) died at that party (and possibly before) it has just seemed like an excuse for debauchery. I hate that the current and former students ruin it for the interested future students + their families. On the flip side it's a big hit to the local economy, so I'm conflicted.
  • Spring sports
Well, they didn't come out and say exactly that all remaining regular season games are cancelled, but if the situation doesn't improve drastically by mid- April I could see the last of the spring sports pack it up for the year. What's the point- no post- season ?

My question would be if athletes not deep into their seasons (baseball mainly) would be eligible for the equivalent of a medical redshirt.

Shutting the season down would most directly benefit UCD Baseball. It would finish with its first winning record since 2015. And I believe no Big West team has played a conference game yet so everyone is tied for first place. 2020 Big West Baseball Co- Champions. Print the t- shirts !

Maybe UCD baseball should celebrate by wearing those t- shirts + make a You Tube Video with a Queen parody. "We are the Co- Champions". They did that 'Sexy and I Know it" video a few years ago.
  • Ags Beat Loyola Marymount 4-3 in 24 Innings
That's not even counting the miscues that weren't called errors. Meredith and Arenado both had plays where the ball was hit right to them + they lost track of it..even though the ball was right there. And then there was the cluster&*!@ play where they were duped by a "get caught in a run- down between 1st + 2nd p while the guy from third scores". This time they relayed the ball in time to Denholm + the runner was a sitting duck, but he instead ran the guy back to 3rd, where the runner had advanced from second (originally was at first). But he took too long + that runner made it back safely + the one who was already there scampered back to 2nd just in time so they didn't even get the automatic out for two runners on the same base at the same time. Meanwhile the trailing runner went back to first. Everyone was safe- bases loaded !

Also, it doesn't seem like Arenado and Murray communicate very well in the field right now. They had at least 2- 3 plays where one got in the other's way. And they did run into each other at least once. And that one fielder's choice above I just wrote "WTF ?" on my scorecard.

This is why I like to say the pre- season games (particularly the first two weeks of the season) are not a good indicator of how good UCD is usually Look at the opponents they scheduled early this year and last- Utah, Utah Valley, Northern Colorado, and North Dakota State. What do they have in common ? Cold- weather schools whose fields are usually unplayable due to ice + snow in Feb. And how did they do ? 12- 3 combined. How much of this success was taking advantage of under- prepared teams that are not generally very good ? I mean, it's not cheating or dishonest at all. Just mis-leading.
  • Ags Beat Loyola Marymount 4-3 in 24 Innings
Ugh, I can't watch this team anymore. The parents can stomach it out of love for their kids but year after year it's error- filled circus baseball. Great, they won a 24- inning game, but how many failures to execute on offense + defense made it necessary to play that long ? And then it hurt them today when their best pitchers weren't available + they were tired. Spillane was left in too long out of need + there was no choice but to let Wilkerson gut out a very rough outing. Better they had lost in 9 on Friday + came out full strength the rest of the series. Good thing there's no Tues game + the players can rest up for Mt St. Mary's.

You had to be there to understand just how bad it was today. I left in the 6th of game two + was all the way home 20 odd miles away + it was still going.

On the positive side Colton Evans is back + Nathan Peng appears to be ok- he was out there warming up some of the pitchers. Maybe he's just not pitching for the time being. They do need a third catcher if Campagna is going to play first.
  • Ags Beat Loyola Marymount 4-3 in 24 Innings
Apparently UCD has a bit more to worry about in conference play this year if UCR is getting complete- game shutouts from its Saturday starter. That guy- Zach Jacobs- was throwing some nasty stuff yesterday. 10 strikeouts and no walks. The highlanders are supposed to be one of the weaker teams- ouch !
  • Ags Beat Loyola Marymount 4-3 in 24 Innings
This game is probably an example of the case against having lights (one of the very few). Had it not been suspended by darkness who knows how late it would've gone ? To say nothing of the physical exhaustion of the players who might not have been lucky enough to be subbed out.

Now with today being a doubleheader I'm expecting two ugly games. If the starting pitchers struggle they're just going to have work through it and get as many outs as they can regardless. Almost every one of the Aggies' better relievers was used for several innings in that game- for 4,5, or 7 innings. That means Dexter Wilkerson, Moffitt and Smith are your go- to relievers today. Better hope Spillane pitches deep into his game and Meredith manages to go more than 4 innings Not a comment about his skill, just an observation on how his previous games have gone.

And what happened to Wyatt Tucker ? Seriously players seem to be dropping like flies. Even before the season began Bruce Galludet (sp?) of the Enterprise said there were "a handful" of injuries to the pitching staff. He named Steven Ouellette (I would guess out for the season). but I don't think he asked Vaughn about the others because he suggested Tim Wieser could be the closer, and of course Wieser hasn't pitched this season. I'm guessing Jared Sasaki (not even on the roster now) and Nathan Peng (who definitely would have been called upon in the last game if he were available). There's also a freshman position player (who pitches) that hasn't played.

And then there are the position players. Your opening day left fielder hasn't played since opening day. Your opening day center fielder hasn't played in several games and your second baseman is in center field. I mean, that's great for the new second baseman, who wasn't even getting to play every day at the community college (though the hitting stats suggest he was very good when he played).

However, if the Aggies are banged up going into conference play there might be a massacre (figuratively speaking) and they may need Wilkerson to do some blood- spatter analysis :(
  • EWU faculty report critical of football program and athletic department budget.
Ok, so don't see a baseball game at Gonzaga, or I'll be robbed or murdered on the way there ? Got it. My dreams of seeing every WCC school in person have been shattered *sarcasm*. Ok, Unpleasant Osrtrich Poop already took care of that.
  • Lighting up Dobbins and WSB
Since before I was a student. I remember something about Phil Swimley wanting to make some additions to Community Stadium in order to someday lure a minor league baseball team. Not a crazy idea at all. Chico State's ballpark used to host a pretty succesful minor league team. It still has a summer wood bat team
