  • New Uniforms?
Maybe it's because I'm not plugged in to our football history, but I think the new uniform combinations starting with the blue from the last few years look decent and could have a place in the rotation if used judiciously. If recruits like them then that's a bonus.

Obviously the Causeway/Horseshoe game and Homecoming should have the classic look, and I think the Davis script helmet works well for that. For the other games though -- particularly DII/nonconference games before school starts -- why not experiment? The team can wear whatever it wants if it wins games. Same way I feel towards the man bun vibe for Basketball.

All-white would be a nice look for away games and is something that's been requested by this forum for several years now. Saving the classic gold-white-gold look for a few away outings but allocating a few games for all-white and blue-white-white would be fine with me.
  • 2017 schedule
I'll be at the San Diego State game, barring some emergency.

I wonder if USD will be a home-and-home? Seeing the Ags in SD 2 years in a row would be pretty cool.

Agree on the script logo -- I'm fine with that, block CA, or the alt Gunrock logo that's just the horse's head. Anything else is really to small/complex to see from the stands.

Whoa. I thought UCD could probably clutch out a gritty, close win but nothing like this. What a way to take down Sac!

It speaks volumes about the esteem of international football competition that the staff of the World Cup Champions could be reassembled at a 3-9 college team.

I've been doing some reddit searches on Hawkins and the most common non-Cody complaint/description I've seen about him from Colorado fans is they felt his success at Boise State was largely due to Petersen's genius as a coordinator. This didn't particularly bother me because that kind of thing can always mean that he's good at identifying talent, delegating, and nurturing good ideas when he hears them.

And really so far that's all seemed to be the case with this staff -- he's pulling in veterans with a lot of experience and generally past histories of success on and off the field. If the criticism in regards to Coach Pete and BSU are true though then that implies to me that Speckman is going to have a lot of freedom to install the fly as little or much as he sees fit -- especially since it fits with Hawk's description of what he wanted to do on offense. Hopefully Hawk and/or Speckman have some wrinkles in mind to address the concerns with it, but honestly it looks to me that all the verbal evidence points to it being the scheme next year.

Also, why make Speckman OC and not announce it? Was Hawk holding out for a different coordinator that he couldn't sway over? Miscommunication with the marketing staff?

If I remember right, last year the game was ours to win until we choked away a lead by missing FTs, allowing the Bison to force OT with all the momentum.
  • Aggie Rundown: Hickey Gym Remodel
I never heard of it being available, though that doesn't mean it wasn't.

Between the ARC and the outdoor courts by the water tower I would think there's enough recreational space to let Hickey be exclusively ICA.

The Aggies are doing that thing where they make the other team look like All Americans again

Can confirm, San Diego State did that and I thought it was really cool. They had football coaches and players teach us passing, kicking, footwork, and running drills in exchange for a free shirt, poster, and burger afterwards. It seemed like several hundred people went and RAs brought their floors and everything.
  • 6'5" Alabama QB w 2 yrs left available now
If he graduated then that means he can use the Vernon Adams Rule and start immediately in FBS, right? Because if so then that right there kills our chances.

There were moments even in the last four years where the students showed some life and willingness to screw things up from our position on the sideline.

My personal favorite was when an assistant coach for an opposing team was so loud that we could actually hear him talk to his unit from the first few rows. So naturally my friends started shouting his instructions verbatim back at him. He got started getting a lot quieter with his instructions after that.

Does the school actually have full control of the kickoff times?

I assume it doesn't for televised games, which basically means Causeway and *maybe* a ROOT broadcast against Montana, and I know some sports leagues coordinate the last game of the season to prevent collusion. Other than that, is there maybe a rule that we can't conflict with TV games for other teams in the conference? Or do we deliberately schedule around the kickoff times for Sac, Cal, and Stanford?

Just wondering, I don't know the answer but as others have said it seems like it should be obvious that these start times aren't working so maybe there are other factors in play.

    Great, dominating win tonight!

There's exactly one senior on this team, and a trio of 6'+ post players arriving next year. The ceiling is so high for this program it's scary.

Most of the schools I see that do have names on jerseys have it as a removable patch, which I personally think looks a bit tacky. Even at the FBS level it seems like a lot of top programs don't have names so I wouldn't consider it a top priority. I don't know about recruits though -- maybe they love that kind of stuff.

Thanks! I wonder if they could designate one of the early games as Greek Day or Club Day or something and offer tailgating passes to student groups. When I was in the Regents Scholars Society some of the upperclassmen put a tailgate together on our own -- and we definitely would have jumped at an opportunity if there was an organized event to go to.

You inspired me to check. TIL that this season would have been my last year of eligibility (#5 on the 5-year clock) to play NCAA football. Pity; I think I could have made a decent punt once in a while.

Here to confirm that complaints about Aggie Pack / student section are very real and not a product of rose-colored glasses for the Toomey era -- even in the last five years the Aggie Pack got significantly less engaged since when I was a freshman. Tube socks were practically nonexistent in the last two years, but I heard they had a supplier issue. Candy madness was before my time but freshman year they would throw out bead necklaces that had froyo coupons -- what happened to those?

This may be controversial but they need to figure out how to encourage students to tailgate and celebrate gameday more, and that may include allowing/incentivizing fraternities to host stuff, which is how most of the big tailgate parties form at SDSU I think.

AFAIK they allow people to buy meals at the stadium with Aggie Cash now (the "debit card" portion of meal plans) -- and maybe if they go through with the university taking over dining they can finally let students get meals with swipes.

Okay, sure, I'll take the Aggies this time because WBB was just about the least frustrating team during my time there. #mildAggiePride
  • WBB: San Diego State @ the Aggies
As far as I know this is the first meeting of the two schools in any sport since I started taking MBA classes at State. Don't know who I'm rooting for yet but I look forward to watching the stream!

I do think the Aggies will have the edge given that SDSU hasn't shown many positives yet. They struggled to establish separation from Cal State San Marcos when I went to see them play, but other than that I don't know much more about them than what shows on paper.

The game also marks a semi-homecoming for SDSU's Baylee Vanderdoes, who's from my area up in Auburn and is the sister of UCLA's Eddie Vanderdoes, one of the top nose tackles in the nation. Quite an athletic family.

I agree that it should be considered, but if we're ever in a position to feasibly move up, I'm not sure being a middling-bad team in the Mountain West would be preferable to being a decent team in the Big Sky.

Currently the "recognizable" schools in our schedule consist of:
    Sac State
    Poly
    one FBS that slaughters us

If we join the MWC West division (assuming Montana or NDSU join the Mountain to balance us), then our guaranteed in-division opponents would be:
    SJSU
    Fresno
    SDSU
    Hawaii
    Nevada
    UNLV

which, with the exception of SDSU, are relatively mediocre. And considering I just had a close UCLA friend (who considered Davis) ask me if SDSU is even FBS, there will still be some recognition issues for our students. (Being able to get home-and-homes with Pac-12 schools would be the clear upgrade of course.)

Going to a MWC school this year has been interesting so long as we were still good enough to have a shot at the Cotton Bowl, and it's cool to have 40k attendance and all, but really it's not terribly different or more relevant than the Big Sky when it's all said and done. Nor is the talent gap particularly noticeable between the bottomfeeders of the MWC and EWU, Montana, etc.
