I had the Gunrock Hazy IPA at the Team Aggie tent before the Idaho game. Hazy IPA is my favorite brew and it was good. I hope they have it at the BB games.

Nice job, Freg. I agree with you also. Middle of the pack for the Aggies seems about right but I'm sure that the team and the coaching staff feels otherwise. Les gets a lot out of the talent he has to work with each year but, as you say, our lack strong interior, impact players has caused us problems of late. He generally build his teams around outstanding guards and tenacious defenders. Aggie fans would love to see an elite big man like Chima in an Aggie uniform again but, for whatever reason, we don't get players like him very often.

One big change in our arena this year is the addition of a huge video board located at the upper level concourse on the north end of the building. I've only seen a photo and it's enormous. That will be nice to have especially for replays and, yes, beer is available at the games.

Even though we are 5-0 and highly ranked, I'm just not sure how strong we really are overall. We put a beat down on San Diego and Dixie State but so has everyone else who has played them and, remember, we gave up 27 points to Dixie State who was averaging 5 points per game coming into the contest. All of our other wins have been close battles where we found a way to win late in the game. I expect that the game at ISU will be tougher than most FCS followers think it will be.

In three of their five games so far this season, the UC Davis Aggies have been outgained in total yardage, sometimes by a significant margin.

In those same three games, the Aggies have trailed entering the fourth quarter. Two of those three games were on the road in front of hostile crowds.

And yet, despite all those negative statistics, UC Davis sits at No. 7 in the nation with an unblemished 5-0 record, hoping to stay unbeaten as it heads to Pocatello to take on winless Idaho State in a Big Sky Conference battle Saturday afternoon.

Bob Dunning picks the Ags by 27:

AGGIES over IDAHO STATE … UC Davis is a team of destiny. Three fourth-quarter comebacks in a 5-0 season. The Bengals are hungry, but the Aggies are way too smart and way too focused to look past anyone. Expect another high-octane performance from the boys wearing Blue and Gold. Take the Ags by 27.

Really interesting, thanks for posting the article. The video showing their new basketball arena is great also. What a beautiful, small capacity arena!

Wow...what an interesting team building film. The program looks like it has boot camp like elements to it without the all the machismo and shouting. Les is big on building a shared team culture where his players set examples for each other hold each other accountable in a good way.

“There was a time in the third quarter where I thought maybe we didn’t deserve to win, but that’s when Aggie Pride kicked in and our guys showed their character,” said UC Davis head coach Dan Hawkins at his weekly press conference. “We showed a tremendous amount of heart and character. We’re 5-0 and there are a lot of teams that would like to be 5-0 right now.”

  • New Covid Protocol - Vax or Neg Test required
Here is a scary example of how deadly Covid can be:

Marc Pilcher, the award-winning hair stylist and makeup designer who won an Emmy for his work on the hit Netflix show "Bridgerton," has died of Covid-19 at the age of 53, weeks after winning the award.

Pilcher's agency Curtis Brown confirmed the news to CNN on Tuesday, referring to a statement the agency gave to Variety, by friends and family.

According to the statement, Pilcher was "double vaccinated" and had no underlying health conditions. He took multiple Covid-19 tests and tested negative to make the trip to the US for the Emmy's ceremony and back to the UK.

Nearly all of the current Covid hospitalizations are unvaccinated people and Covid breakthrough cases like this one are rare but they do happen. I have had 2 Pfizer vaccinations plus the booster but when I go to places of higher risk exposure like indoor shopping, for example, I will still be wearing a mask.

It's just so easy to provide yourself with an extra layer of protection while potentially not spreading the disease to others also if you just happen to be infected . Even though I'm fully vaccinated there's simply no guarantee that I couldn't get Covid and end up very sick, dead or disabled with long-term Covid.

Protect yourselves folks! Having a cavalier attitude towards this disease is like playing Russian roulette.

Great. He's quick and sharp with his PbP call and does a good job of creating a vision of what is happening on the court. He doesn't get lost in some long winded commentary and miss what's happening on the court. He also asks knowledgeable post-game questions and isn't afraid to ask the coaches tough questions. I like that a lot.

Greg Wong, who calls the radio broadcast for women's basketball, is excellent doing the play-by-play call. His interviews with players and coaches is excellent also. I would like to see him get a chance to move up in the Aggie broadcasts.

That's true. However, there was a time when driving under the influence wasn't as strictly enforced and the penalties were not stiff as they are now. The public and the politicians finally took notice after MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) protested and lobbied long and hard. Chances are you'll spend time in jail and lose your driver's license if you kill someone while driving under the influence nowadays and we're seeing stricter laws and penalties for cell phone usage while driving also. We need the same kind of awareness campaigns and strict laws and penalties for driver's who are at fault when hitting cyclists as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if we dropped a few spots even though we won. I don't think the poll voters have much respect for Idaho and, given that we struggled against them, they won't be impressed with our performance. I think that's fair but I also think that Idaho is better than a lot of people think they are.

    Some post-game quotes:

“It’s a great team win for us,” said Tompkins. “It’s just fun for me to get out there with the guys. It’s hard to put into words the feeling we all had on the sidelines. There was never a doubt. I just like playing ball whenever and wherever. Being out there with the boys, there’s nothing like it.”

“He’s a baller,” said Aggie head coach Dan Hawkins of Tompkins. “The spirit, the culture and the heart we have on this team is great. We didn’t necessarily play well enough to win at times, but we were able to make plays when we need to. Blocking that field goal was huge.”

“I give Paul Petrino a lot of credit and tip my hat to the Vandals,” Hawkins added. “That’s a good football team.”

  • Week 5: Idaho @ UC Davis
I agree, Mike, something doesn't seem right with the defensive scheme. Idaho sliced through us much too easily with both the run and the pass. We finally got some pressure on their QB in the second half but, for the most part, their OL stifled us and we had trouble punching any holes in their DL also. All in all, I thought they won the battle in the trenches.

The team energy on the field and in the stadium was going south before TT came in. He plays with so much fire and it's infectious for everyone. We really needed that jolt of adrenaline and it turned the tide of the game for us. We can't overlook how much of a game changer Castles' one-handed grab for the TD was either. That was a very difficult catch with the defender interfering and hanging onto him at the same time when he dove for the ball. He's a special talent.

I like the resilience of this team. They got pushed around a lot by the Vandals but still made some big plays to eke out the win. Overall, Idaho looked like the better team on the field last night. We bent a lot but kept doing enough to put ourselves in a position to win and it paid off in the end. The Vandals have size and talent and they could make some noise in the Big Sky this year if their morale doesn't tank.

We saw Biggs in the Team Aggie tent and he looked good. He's been through a lot and it's wonderful to see him back. He's an Aggie legend.

    Some thoughts:

-Hastings did pretty well considering it was his first start.
-The defense bent but didn't break and came up big with the blocked FG and the INT.
-We gave up nearly 500 yards...glad we weren't playing EWU...I think they would have torched us.
-TT ignited the turnaround...we were looking flat on offense and we needed a momentum swing in a big way and he provided it.
-There's no quit in this team...they've won 3 hard fought, close games this year.
-We need to forget the rankings and just focus on the next opponent.
-It was great to see the crowd get off their fannies and make some noise to help motivate the team. The crowd was great in the 4th quarter and, believe me, they hear us and it makes a difference. Momentum is huge in the tough games.
I fear that the students won't show up without a stampede at our next home game though...
-This game was a war...nothing was easy and, yet, we found a way to win. 5-0 baby!
