  • Dunning Article on the Big West Tournament This Year
I hadn't thought about travel though. It could get tricky if, for example, a team played in Davis one night and then had to travel to Riverside the next day and travel arrangements couldn't be made entirely in advance since you wouldn't know where you were going next until that round of games was over. So it probably wouldn't be manageable or feasible.

From the Enterprise article about the game:

Cameron Ba and B.J. Shaw saw their last action on their home floor, while starter Caleb Fuller, who will also been gone next season, sat out the game with an injury suffered a week ago. Fuller is expected to be ready for action next week.

“It’s a tough time of year, because these guys become a part of your family, and then that changes in an instant,” said Aggie head coach Jim Les.

“A part of you is sad because you’re going to miss them, but a part of you is proud as they go out into the world. We tell them ‘once an Aggie, always an Aggie,’ and that they’re an Aggie for life. If they ever need anything at any point in the future, just give us a call. These are high-class guys with great character who are going to go out and represent this university well.”

I think Hawaii has a fair chance to beat the Gauchos but, then again, Hawaii is notorious for not playing well away from the island. Nevertheless, the Aggie games are very difficult.

The most telling stat about the team turnover problem this year is the Turnover Margin stat. The Turnover Margin is calculated by subtracting the number of times a team turned the ball over from the number of times their opponent turned the ball over. So you want that stat to be a positive number, the higher the better.

However, the Aggies, as a team for the season, have one of the worst Turnover Margins in all of D1 basketball. They rank #332 out of 348 teams with a negative Turnover Margin of a -4.42. We have 371 turnovers to our opponents 265 so far this season and that continues to be a huge problem. It is by far the worst Turnover Margin in the Big West Conference.

As talented as the Aggies are, they have been very sloppy with the ball and commit way too many unforced errors each game. Turnovers are very critical in basketball not only because it gives away possessions but also because it is demoralizing for the players when they make so many mistakes which can carry over to poor execution on both ends of the floor. Turnovers also energize the opponents and often lead to game changing, offensive runs.

Simply put, when you combine lots of turnovers with long stretches of cold shooting, you will not be able to win with any kind of consistency.

Fuller is still out and DeBruhl is back.
  • WBB: Aggies (13-10 & 7-6) at UCSB (13-10 & 7-7) 2 pm Saturday 2/26
The Ags finally woke up in the 4th quarter after falling behind by 17 but lose to the Gauchos for the first time since 2017 by a score of 65-62.

Can't really blame her. Extremely poor play all around by the Aggies. Trail by 17 now.
  • WBB: Aggies (13-10 & 7-6) at UCSB (13-10 & 7-7) 2 pm Saturday 2/26
The Ags come out flat at the start of the second half and quickly fall behind by 11 with sloppy play. Then Jen called a timeout and lit into her team. Wow...I've never seen Jen so livid and animated with her team and I do mean LIVID!

The ice cold shooting Aggies are fortunate to trail only by 5 at 27-22 at the half. Ragged game by both teams. Offensive rebounds have helped keep the game within reach. Live stats is not working but the shooting percentage has been miserable.
  • WBB: Aggies (12-9, 6-5) at CSU Bakersfield (2-16, 1-8) 1 pm Saturday 2/19
That game was played on Thursday, Mike. We listened to the last half of the 4th quarter as we were driving home form the UCSB game and the Ags word 58-50. The Ags were up by 17 with 5:13 to go and only scored one point the rest of the game.

  • MBB: UC Davis (11-7, 4-3) vs. UC Santa Barbara (12-10, 4-5) 6 PM @ Pavillion
Agree...it was a good sized crowd but it was flat in the building until the end. Always nice to have a few members of the band there.

My son was at the Chinese New Year Celebration last week in SF and he sent us a video of the Aggie Band marching in the parade and they were impressive. The crowd loved them too.

Fuller was out during the warming up before the game but then came out in street clothes at the start of the game. Makes me think he's good to do things that have no risk of contact.

    From the Enterprise:

“I really appreciated our fight,” Les said. “We came out flat to start the second half and had every reason to just lie down and give in, but that’s when we really started to fight and it gave us a chance to win. Santa Barbara made some tough shots and we had some good looks that didn’t fall, but I really liked our intensity in the second half.”

The Aggies were without the services of Caleb Fuller, who was injured in last Saturday’s win over Cal State Bakersfield, but will presumably be back before the end of the season.

“We had to make adjustments,” Les added, “but our bench gave us some great minutes.”

SB has big men who very athletic as well as having size and that's always going to be a tough matchup for us inside. They killed us on the offensive boards. With their kind of size and athleticism, they were able to go over the top of our bigs on several occasions for a tip in or another offensive board even when we were in good position for the rebound.

Pure specualtion on my part but I wonder if Caleb has some loose teeth from that hit to the mouth that he took in the Bake game? That's a slow healing process if that's the case. Do they even make a full face guard that would help protect his mouth?

The SB head coach and one of his assistants have very fiery tempers. They both exploded quite a few times and were real close to getting technicals. On the other hand, Les is still intense but his sideline behavior has really mellowed over the years.

The Ags battled short handed with Fuller and Debrhul out and, as always, the Ags played very hard. Pepper had 21 and Manjon had 19 but neither shot the ball very well overall. They were a combined 16 of 40 and Pepper was only 4-13 from 3 and he usually hits those at a higher percentage.

Anigwe just can't seem to stay out of early foul trouble. I thought Murphy did a nice job of filling in for Anigwe particularly. We just don't have the interior size to match up well with the Gauchos.

A couple of huge plays hurt the Ags in overtime. The no call on the charge that Pepper took when he went flying to the floor and then Mitchell hit a 3. Also, poor Ade missed a wide open bunny right at the rim. Those hurt.

Mitchell was lights out scoring 27 of his 31 points in the second half. We simply couldn't stop him.

Great defense by the Ags. Held SB to 31%. Tough matchups for us with their size though.

Fuller and DeDruhl are in street cloths. That makes us thin especially the loss of Fuller.
