  • MBB: Hawai`i vs. UC Davis, Friday March 5 at 2 pm
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser had a brief write-up about the games. It was very objective and explained how the seedings for the Big West work in simple terms. Hawai`i, having played a full schedule will have a harder time changing its winning percentage even if they sweep, but that--of course--is what they are going to try to do to give themselves the best seeding possible. If they do, they will move past UC Davis since they will be 10-8. A split would keep them below, so they have a bit more pressure to win 2.I think the Ags will wind up with the third seed if they sweep no matter what else happens, but I only gave it a cursory look.

What?! Game now starting at 4? I guess they don't care as much about shifting the starting time when they have no fans heading toward the Pavilion. It's pretty annoying when I schedule the day around being able to watch the game.

I think I need a refresher course in math. What grade level would let me figure out the Big West formula? 6th?
  • MBB: UC Davis at Cal Poly, Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2:00
Ags are no longer playing better on Saturdays, which makes sense since the rust of the long layoff has worn off. They were lucky to win today and it took Cal Poly not scoring at all in OT to do it. As ugly game with a combined 44 turnovers and 55 fouls called. I did like the guys doing the broadcast, even though they were Cal Poly guys. They did a fair game and know basketball as well as anyone at any level of college ball. The Mustangs will be good next year. They have a lot of young talent.

I think that this is one of the most over-officiated games it has been my misfortune to witness.
  • MBB: UC Davis at Cal Poly, Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2:00
Aggies playing a lot better today, especially their shooting which is 54.5% with about 12 minutes to go in the first half.

In an earlier message I mentioned that the Aggies were on a 6-game winning streak against Cal Poly and that a sweep would give them the longest winning streak against any Big West opponent ever. That was in error. I forgot that they beat the Mustangs in a tournament game back in 2017, so yesterdays victory did set that record and they should extend it today, especially since they should play better on this Saturday.

DrMike: There are no reported stats as to who got blocked, but I seem to recall Manjon, Pepper, Ba, Anigwe, and Fuller as well as Koehler getting their shots blocked at least once. Maybe Koehler got his blocked more than the others, as his 1 for 11 would indicate.

I thought the Ags played rather poorly for much of the game, too many turnovers, poor shooting (in addition to all those blocks) and even substandard defense, but they did come through at the end as you mention and their 3 point shooting made a big difference.

Not to be self-righteous about it, but Borra is spelled with two r's. What's in a name? I still don't get where Gunrock came from.
  • MBB: UC Davis at Cal Poly, Friday, Feb. 26 at 2:00
Great to see Squire back and sinking 3s. Adebayo too. Borra seems to be more athletic than I expected for a 6 ' 11" freshman.

Ags look like they've lost their mojo the last few minutes.
  • MBB: UC Davis at Cal Poly, Friday, Feb. 26 at 2:00
This is a very strange game. Ags have had 10 shots blocked and are shooting only 32%. Only Squire and Fuller have more than one field goal. Cal Poly had not made a shot outside the paint until the last 4 minutes and have turned the ball over twice as much as UCD. We know that the Aggie hoopsters can score more reliably, so I think the "Friday Blues" have hit but it is likely we will still win if they can just avoid all those blocked shots. I think they are forcing the ball too much on the inside shots. All 10 blocks have come on point blank shots. The guys need to fake better or pass the ball out.

Aggies are 27-35 all time against Cal Poly SLO and 10-19 down near Morro Bay, but they are working on a rivalry record 6 game winning streak vs. the Mustangs. If they ca sweep down there, it will become the longest winning streak that UC Davis has had against any Big West team.
  • Missing Players
So if there are no redshirts this season, then Kennedy Koehler could play another year (assuming he want to). I think he's the only senior on the team. With some of the new guys looking very good lately (I'm thinking of Shaw, Murphy and Ba in particular) and with some size emerging, the Aggies could be very good next year whether Koehler returns or not. Of course, there is always the problem of transfers, but it seems to me that in recent years, UC Davis has been more of the beneficiary of the increased number of transfers than the loser.
  • MBB: Long Beach State vs. UC Davis, Saturday, 1 pm
Zander: From Appendix 6, if I figured this correctly, based on the current standing, the Aggies and Long Beach State would have played the fewest number of games (6). Using paragraph 2, the adjusted average would be 9.25. Since an adjustment occurs only if the team has 4 or more games below that average, no adjustments will take place unless more games are cancelled, but if they are, then the adjustment would be to add losses?! That makes no sense because it penalizes the school just because they had the rug pulled out of them once already. If the Cal Poly games are cancelled, and the Aggies split with Hawaii, they'd be 4-4 and might have their record adjusted to 4-5 which could cost them their earned position in the playoffs.

Don't look now but UC Davis is in 5th place in the Big West. With four games left they could hold onto that seed for the tournament. If they keep improving (I felt that the Beach games were a bit of a step back) they could give the top dogs a run for the money. Watch out for CSU Bakersfield.

I'm getting too old for this kind of excitement, especially two days in a row. In two weeks against Cal Poly, I'm hoping for a blowout win. I agree with DrMike, BJ Shaw is a heady, solid player. I saw him nearly steal a dribble, then quickly move to his opponents opposite side in case the guy tried to move around him. Shows that he's a coach's son. My only criticism of the Ags is that they both forced and missed a lot of shots in the paint. At least they ball faked on their perimeter shots enough to avoid the blocks that the Beach got yesterday.
  • MBB: Long Beach State vs. UC Davis, Saturday, 1 pm
Good job by the Ag sin coming back from 11 down. Their foul shooting is better than yesterday's (which--if you subtract Anigwe's 0 for 7 was merely mediocre). but both teams fouling a lot. That is usually a sign of tired defense, meaning that the players are not moving their feet and reaching in a lot. If their shooting imrpoves (35% at the half) they should win.

Tried to find it on ESPN3. Nada. I'm not going to bother with ESPN anymore unless a game is missing on BigWestTV.
