  • 2023 Week 3: Southern Utah (0-2) @ UC Davis (1-1)
On the third game if the season they are are still copying the same error and listing a defensive lineman as #70 in the list of starters in the box score.
    70 Roncevich,Luke DL
Should be 70 Eli Simonson OL

    70 isn’t even Luke’s number.

Davis’ D really dominated the SUU offense until Davis got what seemed to be a comfortable lead. Even in the Commerce game Davis let up in the second half and let them put up respectable stats even though they were never in the game. Last year Davis was actually the best team in the big sky as far as points allowed in league play, but near the middle of the pack in other defensive stats. The defense either loses focus, or plays soft when they have a bigger lead.

Minor Mysteries of the Depth Chart:
Uilsoni Amone has been listed on the depth chart for two years and according to his profile has never played. Meanwhile Suani and Toki are not listed at that position, where they have both played and in past seasons started games.
Porter Connor is listed as a linebacker in depth chart and on roster as a DB, a change they made a few weeks back.
Up to this point last season and this, the backup to Larison has been Matteo Perez, but they don’t list him.

This is copied from the Southern Utah “preview”, where they mention these players.
None of these players have the correct class listed
#4 Rex Connors DB 6' 1" Redshirt Freshman
    #1 C.J. Hutton WR 5' 9" Sophomore
    #3 Lan Larison. RB 6' 0" Sophomore
    #18 Trent Tompkins QB 6' 0" Sophomore

The number of transfer will decrease once the COVID extra year fades away. Particularly the grad transfers, but even undergraduates won’t be as attractive if it’s just for a year. The history here is that transfers have contributed a lot more in their second year. There will still be transfers though and the FCS teams are likely to be net losers of talent.

Why do you feel the need to talk about a game where you don’t give a fart?
  • 2023 Week 2: UC Davis @ Oregon State
Unbelievable. For the first two games the box score on the Davis site doesn't list Eli Simonson as a starter in the game. it lists his number 70, but with the name of a defensive lineman Luke Roncevitch. This is a direct result of Hawkins not supplying a depth chart. Whoever is doing the stats copied game 1 starters and looked only for new numbers.
The same participants are listed on the Oregon State official site.

i watched about half of the Weber UNI game. Weber is physical, they are going to be a challenge.
Eastern Washington game speaks for itself, they are going to be tough to beat also.
It will be interesting to see if Idaho gets blown out by Cal.
  • 2023 Week 2: UC Davis @ Oregon State
Anyone would expect a loss, but sometimes games like this have an appearance of a contest. For example Furman vs South Carolina was competitive for awhile and Furman was a huge underdog. Eastern Washington was impressive in their game against Fresno and they were a huge underdog. Time will tell how good Oregon State is.

He’s an Oregon State alum if I recall correctly.

Most Californians are from someplace else, and they have their attachments to their former home. People who move here from Michigan remain Michigan fans, etc. The big football college teams here have a small percentage of the college alumni, due both to number of non football schools and the number of foreign or out of state graduates. Plus we have a lot of people here who don’t relate to football. Berkeley and Stanford aren’t going to draw non college workers like might happen in with fans in some regions, where the team represents the community more. This is partly due to the prevalence of professional sports in California taking over the fans with no attachment to the schools.

Not saying he wont run over them; he just won’t do it because they are small. I think the 247 preview was lazy, just assuming an FCS team is small, They are bigger than San Jose State.
  • 2023 Week 2: UC Davis @ Oregon State
    Just read this preview https://247sports.com/college/oregon-state/longformarticle/oregon-state-beavers-matchup-preview-uc-davis-offense-215278921/#2229147

    Which had this conclusion:
Expect a huge game from Damien Martinez. While UC Davis is a very talented team for the FCS level, their front seven will have a difficult time stopping Oregon State's backs. The smallest of the three Oregon State RB's listed on the depth chart is 222 pounds, while the Aggies are simply not as big or physically built to slow down the size and speed of the OSU backs. Look for Martinez, Deshaun Fenwick, and Isaiah Newell to feast behind what should be a dominant performance from the Beaver O-Line.
Martinez and their o-line may have a huge game but not because Davis is “simply not as big”. Davis starting front three are 6’2 347, 6’5 251, 6’6 251, linebackers are 6’2 240: 6’2, 237, 6’2 237. Most the DBs are good size.

Which four teams are left behind after the dissolution of the Pac12? Which four teams had the lowest attendance? There is a correspondence. Attendance probably equates roughly to interest in watching on TV also. The teams without a fan base were left behind.
  • Wild World of Realigment
The top teams will make a lot of money, but the overall audience for college football will decline. Without conference affiliations, there will be little that broadens the interest in the postseason games beyond fans of the schools involved. This may take a few years, but the narrower appeal will eventually lead to less money for all concerned.
  • FCS Regular Season Polls
I don’t see an argument why Weber is ahead of Idaho, Sac and Davis. They just had a solid but not overwhelming win over a D2 team. If they hadn’t lost so many transfers and their head coach, I could understand but they are not a known quantity They actually moved up after gaining only 306 yards against a D2 team. I’ll be surprised if they upset Northern Iowa.
  • 2023 Week 1: UC Davis @ Texas A&M Commerce
I just noticed they ran Larison from the wildcat at the 2, with Chubba as the lead blocker. Chubba lined up as a tight end on the right, pulled and crossed over to the left side and led the ball carrier,
  • 2023 Week 2: UC Davis @ Oregon State
It is not gamesmanship. They don’t make an effort to produce it. This wouldn’t matter if there was any press that covered the team, even the Davis Enterprise largely basis their coverage on athletic department press releases, so not producing content really cuts back on information about the team. They don’t grasp that they have to self promote, and that needs to be broader than just a few name players.
Evan Bearden started not Franz Pohlman
Eli Simonson started not Luka Roncevich
Nick Eaton #53 started not of Jacob Horne #38.
  • 2023 Week 2: UC Davis @ Oregon State
Looks like no game notes this week again. Even if they don’t publish them the should give a depth chart to the statistician who does the player participation stats, because they misidentified starters in the first game. If uncorrected, and i expect it to be uncorrected this flows into all the players stats. They owe it to the players to list who plays correctly. We have a player from Nebraska who transferred here to play, he earns a start in his first game and then the game box score doesn’t list his name. I expect his friends and family in Nebraska looked for it.
